  1. Sorry guys. Doesn't look like there is a WTF in my future. A series of unfortunate events before Christmas left my money tight and not much more PTO from work. Enjoy! Bring some powder gear! I'm sure the snow is good. We've had over 125 inches of snow for the season so far!

  2. YES! I finally got someone at Northern Rocky Mountain Division who agreed to give this a chance. Now, it's up to me to make it work!

Snowboard: Hard Boots & Alpine Boards

    Saturday or Sunday

Learn to lay it over and rip some deep carves in the fresh Big Sky corduroy. Please bring your own equipment if you can, and maybe extras to share. We may have a few boards and bindings for peopel to use. If you don't have hard boots, rent/borrow some ski boots.

I think we need 4 or 6 to make it happen. You can still get your credits even if you are registered in another division. Anyone interested? All the details on the website:

  3. Can you post a link when there is one?

I did also find out that if you are a PSIA/AASI member, you can use this toward general credit requirements in your division. We need to have at least 4 participants (I think) to have the group, but I'm hoping if there aren't enough, we might be able to make a multi-discipline event out of the alpine groomer one!

Let me know if you want to go, I'd be happy to share some driving time. (I'm near Missoula so I'd think you'd be coming through here)

  4. Last night I got word from a member of the Snowboard Committee of PSIA/AASI (American Association of Snowboard Instructors) - Northern Rocky Mountain Division that they have agreed to offer Alpine Snowboarding as an elective at the annual Fall Festival.

Fall Festival is an annual event held at Big Sky Resort the second weekend of December. It allows member to get credits needed to maintain certification status. I'm told there will be some boards available for participants and I will round up any extras I can take as well. The hard part will be boots. Hopefully people will be able to bring some softer ski boots or AT boots. Or maybe even rent some boots there? I know it's not ideal, but I used ski boots for years back in the early days.

I just hope there will be some interest to justify a group and early season conditions can be iffy. But all that aside, I'm super excited to have this opportunity at Fall Festival and maybe the first time in a long time I am looking forward to attending!

  5. When is the snow going to stop? Crazy weather week here in Missoula. Lost Trail Power Mountain reported 9 feet of snow in the last 3 weeks or so.... all I'm asking for is a firm base so I can get on an edge without sinking! I'd almost want to request my Pennsylvania powder again, but I think it was a pretty snowy winter there too!!!!! a 68 year old record was broken in Missoula for the most snow in a 24 hour period last Monday... then national news of the human triggered avalanche that slid into town taking out a house and burying an elderly couple and an 8 year old boy. I can only imagine the records being set if January wasn't so warm!

  6. I think soft boots are more forgiving. Greater margin for error. Hardboots are so responsive which we all like for carving, but for a beginner, it might be too much.

I do agree with the determination thing... so, if he REALLY wants to.... go for it!

I've been an instructor for a long time and I have seen so many beginners struggle with the fine muscle control (ie, very jerky movements even in soft boots) which is so necessary in a hardboot setup.

  7. Allee.... what days are you going to be riding? I wasn't really planning on going, but maybe I could swing it one day.... long drive though for one day! If I don't end up going, any locals might be able to do me a favor? Last year I loaned a board and I need to get it back at some point. Yes, Allee... the Hot Blast!

  8. dang... already made a reservation in Sandpoint.... but... if I were to cancel, would it be kid friendly??? pool somewhere to use? maybe we should just stay in town... let me know though. Also, the BBQ would be totally awesome!!!! We will be on the hill Thursday and Friday. Is there anything I can bring to contribute for lunch? If nothing else, a few $$$ at least??? Looking forward to the trip. Have only done two runs so far this season on the carving board. And lets say... well... didn't end so great!!! Maybe I can try to get on it at least for a few more runs before we head up.

  9. howdy all
