  1. Thanks man but thats a bit pricy for a 3 year old board dont you think? I remember seeing it for 375 when it was brand new in the store.

Sorry I'm a little out of touch with pricing on freestyle boards and softboot equipment. Value of anything is pretty much market driven, ie what is someone willing to pay for it. Around here second hand Kesslers that have been raced on for a season will sell for more than $700. The Coiler Schtubby I've been riding for two seasons would probably sell pretty quickly if I offered it for $400 (this is not for sale). A 12 year old MADD 158 will often go for at least $300 but a similarly aged new burton alp would only be worth $50-$100.

Personally I'd consider dropping $1500 on a new GS sized Kessler, and would have no problem paying $1000 for a Coiler or Donek GS high end custom carving board, but would have a tough time justifying paying more than $400 for an off the shelf softboot board.

Whether you think it is pricey really depends on how badly you want it I suppose. It's unridden, so it technically is new, and other than cosmetics there is likely little differentiation between the three model years, though a couple of reviews indicate the older model might have been a little softer. Considering that it is the only one I could find in about 20 minutes of searching I'd say your options are pay that amount, try and negotiate with the seller for a lower amount, or look at a later model.

    Cheers,

  2. Thanks Dave,

I honestly knew nothing about this forum, just that it was about snowboarding in general and it looked pretty active. Sorry for posting, I'll look elsewhere.

Not trying to scare you off or make you feel unwelcome. This is a pretty active site, with a (generally) friendly community. And carving honestly is a good time. It's just the likelihood of someone here having that board is just probably pretty low.

    Could still happen though.:biggthump

If you are interested in carving at all, fin (bomber online) is supposed to be releasing some beefy riser plates for softbooters in the next couple of weeks. Again nothing someone in the park would need or want as risers raise your COG and make your balance weird on rails, but if you're interested in carving in softboots they'd be handy.

    Cheers,

    Dave

  3. Definately on the desperation side because this board is no where to be found on the internet. Idk why

This is a carve oriented snowboarding site primarily frequented by hardbooters. Softbooters who can hold an edge, ride with forward angles, and might eventually be convinced to come over to the darkside are also found lurking around here.

Because boards designed for carving, (softboot or hardboot) are typically longer, stiffer, and have a larger SCR than a park deck most people here probably wouldn't have such a board. The nose of a board designed for doing butters would either fold or chatter at typical carving speeds. Additionally short boards with short effective edges, and small sidecut radii are unstable at the typical speeds carvers ride at.

That being said you should take a look around here there is a lot of info on the site and the rush you get on a groomed black when you throw yourself across your board onto the downslope edge, basically into free fall, while the board carves a 3" deep perfect half-circle out of the groom eventually coming around to catch you is like no other.

    Cheers,

    Dave

  4. Both the The run "North Axe" - at Nakiska (Number 2 on the trail map) and myself.

I was completely unable to carve it last year during NES, though by the end of the season I had finally almost managed it with only one or two skid turns on the steepest bit at the top.

To top it off it's right under Bronze chair. You can't skid turn down the black section and then try and look like a hero when the grade softens on the lower blue section. You have to own it all the way down.

Everytime I look at a trail map of Nakiska, it laughs at me. :angryfire

    Dave

P.S. Ok I'll leave and take my brand of crazy somewhere else now.

  5. This discussion started-up in the "Kicking Horse AM or Carve" thread I've got going, so I'm bringing it over here.

    Rice,

Any chance of going somewhere on Sunday to do either some AM riding, or at least a different set of groomers for those who can't get their freak on off piste, would be nice way to finish off NES this year. Sunshine, Louise, and Castle were all forwarded in that other thread. I know you consisdered this last year but all the other mountains had some events on.

    Corey,

What do you mean no AM board? That 182 NSR has got to be just awesome in tight trees. ;)

    Dave

  6. Re NES - I'd be up for Sunday at another hill as well. Louise would be fun, or the other option if the snow's good is Castle Mountain. I've never been there, it's supposed to be a ball off piste. Even KH is do-able, and especailly if we decided to stay in Banff/K Country for the evening on Saturday.

Anything except KH as I'm driving people who have to make the airport on Sunday evening.

  7. OK it is definately an AM only weekend then.

If anyone wants to join me for some AM riding at KH Jan 21,22 feel free and post below where you would like to meet. As the family will be at home I've got no plans to ride anything either groomed or less than a black that weekend. That said I might need a run or two to get my old AM form back.

    Dave

  8. Bumpity... Make me an offer. Email only, you pay for shipping to where you would like. Please keep in mind the quoted text below, and that the boots have been punched out.

If you are a lighter or beginner carver, or you are looking for a boot for AM Freeriding these will work for you. If you know how to lay pressure down these boots will be to soft for you.

    Dave

  9. ...but if you're going to NES I'm totally up for ducking out on Sunday to do AM riding at Sunshine or Louise.

I'm driving Les, my two daughters and a couple of other people. If everyone wants to take it elsewhere I'll go, otherwise I'll probably stay at Nakiska. If we stay at Nakiska I might pull out my AM board and go hit the glades on Sunday because I'm not sure my legs will be able to take three days of carving this early in the season.

Perhaps Steve will be up for taking the Expression Session to another hill on Sunday? I'd be up for Sunshine, but then I have seasons passes there this season.

    Dave

  10. Looks like AM then.

I'm on a bus trip with a bunch of MBA students so Les and the kids aren't coming along. I guess I'll be taking he opportunity to go ride some really stupid terrain. It'll give me a chance to give my new UPZ ATBs a good workout anyway. I should be able to finish writing my review on them after that weekend. Hopefully someone on the ski trip can actually ride/ski the last couple of people I talked to had only ridden a few times.

My thing is that I'm only there for two days, my Schtub carves great but I'm not so wild about the 65/60 angles in the trees.

My custom Donek AMs great. But because I asked for a slightly softer nose on it, for doing butters and stuff, it doesn't carve as well. And at 50/45 angles I find I can really easily overpower the nose in HB. This board is more like a softboot freeride board than a HB AM board, if I was to buy it again I'd look at a 23cm waist instead of the 25cm it currently is.

OT here but I'm thinking I want a Coiler AMT around 171 with a 23cm waist as my future AM board. Then maybe upgrade the Schtubby to a Monster/VSR.

It's one of those things where I hate to show up with the wrong deck. And my space might be a bit limited with it being a bus trip. Oh well at least I'll be getti my carve on the previous weekend.:D.

BTW if anyone wants to come out and ride AM for that weekend post where you want to meet.

    Cheers,

    Dave

  11. I'm going to be out at Kicking Horse January 21,22 (the weekend following NES). For some weird reason I've never been there before.

I've heard there is some great gnarly AM terrain; IIRC Riceball broke an Coiler AMT (sob) when he stuffed it in a mogul last year.

Question is, hows the mountain for carving? Should I bother bringing my Schtub or should I just stick with my AM stick which doesn't carve as well as I would like?

    Dave

  12. I'm 6'2" and not quite as solid as I'd like at 225. My boots are mondo 28.

I ride TD3 Step-ins on both of my boards. On the AM board I use the yellow elastomer, as I like having a bit of shock absorbtion and movement.

I used to use the yellow elastomer on my carving board as well and rode with them for the 09/10 season but last season I decided to try the blue. Personally i thought the response was better from the blue, less laggy, without a hugely noticeable loss in suspension ride quality. That is I could feel more of the inconsistencies in the surface I was riding on.

There was a thread on air suspension last year where Scooby stacked a yellow elastomered TD3 on a TD2 suspension kit. In that thread I posted my opinion on going to a blue from yellow elastomer.

    http://www.bomberonline.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=323075&postcount=24

I also know when I initially went from a non-suspension binding to the TD3s with yellow elastomers I really appreciated how much smoother the ride felt. Not getting pounded by the terrain let me focus more on what I was supposed to be doing and perhaps that little bit of lag prevented some body errors from getting to the board edge. Interestingly enough I have since then switched my boot tongues to the softer black version. So I've stiffened the binding to board interface but allowed for more ankle flex.

If I were you I'd order a couple of extra sets of elastomers and decide which ones you want to use while you are riding. At $29 a set an extra $60 will get you the other two colours that don't come with your bindings. That way you don't have to dick around with extra shipping costs later.

This being said I've never tried Reds but wouldn't mind giving them a shot.

  13. 13 inches, really:freak3:?
Shaquile O neals old BX deck...33cm waist! haha

You guys aren't seeing the upside to a metal 33cm waisted board.

Sure its a little slower edge to edge but just think of all the cookies you can bake on it when you're not racing. And you could shave minutes off your prep time on race day by baking a giant batch of cookies and hot boxing the board at the same time.

  14. I put my booster straps under the tongues, over the liners. Just like all my skiing buddies. It honestly never occurred to me to put it over the tongue, as I was trying to cure shin bang.

I'm going to have to try this under the tongues and over the liners. I would have assumed that it was better to tie everthing (boot, liner, and calf) into a unit to eliminate shin bang.
