  1. There’s a guy...

There is a guy that works in the wax/tuning shop at Canyon Lodge at Mammoth. He’s a bit older than the regular crew of teenagers whom you are likely to encounter there. Anyway he’s been there for years and he knows about alpine boards, tuning and beveled edges and such.

I’ve never used them but you might also look up Stick Docs. They’ve been around for a few years so I assume that they know what they are doing.

Not sure if that’s much help but that’s all I got for California. If you have plans for Aspen, Gene Taylor’s at Snowmass has a good shop too.

  2. I'm up here now and skied the afternoon. Aside from half the mountain being closed, the snow conditions on the runs that are open are better than what I was expecting. Occasional bad spots here and there but no rocks or other debris. The Mtn was pretty much empty with zero lift lines too.

  3. While up a Mammoth a few weeks ago, there was a couple behind me and I couldn't help but overhear their conversation. I heard the girl call attention to the board and bindings that I was on, which is not that uncommon. What followed was. The guy obviously didn't know anything about the equipment, but it didn't stop him from explaining things. He went on to say that this equipment was for beginners just learning how to snowboard and the bindings were designed to release in a fall, just like ski boots. I don't know how he came up with this but have to give him some credit. He probably worked in sales. I really don't need validation from strangers and had no interest in making him look like an idiot in front of his girlfriend, so I just ignored the entire thing.

  4. A little warm, and sounds like there's a bit of freeze/thaw, but we'll have a good time. Sharpen those edges if you're going to get first tracks!

Lets all try to park just right of the lift at Chair 2. See you guys soon!

I've been up here since tuesday afternoon. Mostly good conditions. Icy groom in the morning, wet and sticky around lunch time. Bumpy hard pack as it starts freezing up around 3:00. I'll be on skis friday to give the boarding muscle group a rest.
