  1. F2 SPEEDSTER 172cm, "no specs on board"

    hi snowcarver

    i have the narrow version of your board 170n as opposed to your 172w.

    the 2 cm difference is in the nose only as the tail, running length, edge contact and scr are identical.

    the specs (i saved the sticker when i bought mine!):

    model year 1996/97

    scr = 14 m

    edge contact = 1540 mm

    running length = 1485 mm

    tail length = 50 mm

    tail kick = 7 mm

    the waist on my narrow model is 18.5 cm and i believe in the 96/97 model year the difference was 1.5 cm so yours should be 20.0 cm. you should measure it with a tape measure and repost the info as it would be a key selling feature as everyone seems to want wider boards (& lower binding angles) nowadays.

    hope this additional info helps you sell your board. should be NO problem at only 150 bucks.

    the forecast is now calling for clear and cold so it will probably be hero winter style groomed snow. are you and Dave* going to bring your big guns? if so then i'll bring up my 185 wcr and we can hit up the orange chair for some big fast turns.

    i'm okay with the roundhouse but if chris prior shows up i think his favorite run is ridgerunner on blackcomb--just thought i'd let you know if you guys intend to stay on one mountain the entire day.

    i may be a little tired as i got tagged by graffiti in east vancouver and have to paint it out on saturday morning to avoid being fined by the city. also i have tickets to apocalyptia on saturday night so i might be a little hung over so i intend to show up earlier for a solo warmup run or 2 to sweat out the booze. if i am not at the lightboard at 9am sharp, please wait a few minutes as that would mean that i was delayed on the emerald chair (probably warming up on the nearby jolly green giant run.)

    I am hoping to take one of his D1 6.0 ++ out next week, I will let every one know how that goes.

    If packing boots only bring your bindings too, finding spare plates can be a bit tricky out here.

    i agree with Dave*. the latest weather report seems to be forecasting winter style snow so with a bit of luck we may get hero groomed snow on a clear sunny day. in other words raceboard conditions. ruwi is returning my 19.5 cm waisted prior wcr 175 to me up at whistler so you are welcome to use it after you are finished demoing the dupraz.

    sorry it took so long but it took awhile to excavate all the old boards that you were interested in. i don't think burton ever made a 165cm ultraprime so i think you must mean the next closest size of 162 cm (156 and 168 being the other 2 possible sizes.) coming from a softboot background most alpine boards probably look longer than they actually are because of the short nose and tail lengths compared to a softboot board. i will limit this info to the 162cm model since it falls within your desired 160 to 164 cm requirement.

    you have to be careful when comparing ultraprimes from different years as they changed after the first year and were only produced for 3 years (97/98, 98/99, and 99/00.) after the first year the board waist increased from 18.5 cm to 19.7 cm in 98/99 and remained 19.7 cm in the third and final year of production in 99/00. for some inexplicable reason they altered the sidecut radius to preserve the length of the board as the 97/98 162 cm ultraprime with an 18.5 cm waist had a scr of 10.97m while the same length 98/99 162 cm ultraprime with a 19.7 cm waist had a scr of 11.21m. it would have made more sense to do what f2 did and altered the shape/length slightly to preserve the scr as they used to make a "wide" and "narrow" version of each f2 speedster rs model but at least they both had the same scr.

    i am attaching photos of the red 18.5 cm waisted 97/98 model and the green 19.7 cm waisted 99/00 model. i won't bother with the 98/99 model as it was exactly the same dimensions as the 99/00 model. did the ultraprime that you demoed look like either of the 2 in the picture? if not then the only other possibility is it was the 98/99 model with a yellow topsheet. the boards are in relatively good shape. the red 97/98 model has a tail repair done with grayish coloured marine epoxy which has held up all year and doesn't affect the ride. the green 99/00 model developed a slight bump that disappeared with a base grind. i rode both boards last weekend to make sure they were sound and they were still good after all these years. the yellow 98/99 model (not shown) had a core shot when i hit a rock about 6 years ago which i repaired with epoxy so i would say the condition is not good on that one. also i never tested it since so i would advise against you choosing it. the 99/00 green one with the exact same dimensions is in a lot better shape but you are welcome to this 98/99 yellow one if for some reason it appeals to you more.

    i've never had any nose folding issues in hardpack (but i do tail ride it in softer snow conditions just to be on the safe side) so you probably should be okay in that respect seeing that we are about the same weight. i weigh 153 pounds but at 5'11 i am 3 inches taller than you are so the extra leverage i can exert probably more than makes up for the 7 pound difference in our weights. i am mondopoint 27 so the 18.5 cm waisted 97/98 model requires about 60 degree binding angles to ensure the absence of boot drag. with your 26.5 mondopoint it is less of an issue. if you prefer lower angles then you will need the wider 98/99 or 99/00 model. if you do decide you need the wider board, then you may wish to consider another board i have.

    it is not an ultraprime but a 1996 5.9 192s factory prime (which was your other choice.) it has a 19.2 cm waist which is effectively the same as the 19.7 cm waist of the latter year ultraprimes--.5cm total or .25 cm on either side of the board isn't going to allow much if any binding angle change--in other words a negligible difference. this factory prime is the gray coloured board shown in the attached pics. it's length is 159.7 cm (or 160 cm rounded to the nearest cm. so it just barely makes it into your 160 to 164 cm requirement) it is unique in that despite it's short running length it has a disproportionately large scr of 11.51 meters and was marketed by burton in 95/96 as a GS board. for some unknown reason it was only produced for the one year as it disappeared from the lineup in 96/97. probably because the 11.51 meter scr made it difficult to market as it was too big for slalom and a tad small for gs but for freecarving it was perfect. it was short enough to manuever in crowded conditions and narrow cat tracks and the large scr allowed me to open it up during uncrowded early morning large turn radius speed sessions--the best of both worlds in one board. in addition the factory prime is less twitchy than the ultraprime as well as being stiffer in the nose so there is less chance of nose folds. i think your best choice of the 3 boards in the attached photos would be the factory prime (it is also in the best condition of the 3 boards (base is good, edges still have lots of life and decent camber.)) however, the final decision is up to you--please feel free to choose whichever one you want.

    i feel responsible for your original burton ultraprime/up thread that got locked so will do my best to make it up to you. let me know which of the 3 pictured boards you prefer and i will ship it out to you for free. i'll also pay the shipping charges since you are a cash strapped student. my time may be limited on this forum if i decide to pursue a different unrelated matter with the moderators so i hope you can make a decision soon and we can get this done before the end of the month. i will check this thread again in about a week as there are a few other threads i wish to contribute to in the meantime while i still have the chance. if i don't see a post from you on THIS thread by next friday (april 18th) then i will assume you made other arrangements to get a board from someone else and will consider the matter closed.

  5. Anyone else, don't embarrass yourself by questioning Bordy's skills/experience/knowledge. One of the best I've seen.

    good advice Mr. Michaud but you do realize that JohnBauer was not out of line by requesting further clarification from Mr. Bordy and he certainly did not "embarrass" himself. after all i remember you "embarrassing" yourself (equally if not worse) about a decade ago in a similar bomberonline situation lol.

    i watched the NSR video before it was pulled and it appears that under the prevailing circumstances (snow conditions, slope pitch, chosen turn shape, chosen equipment) that he was indeed RIPPING on what appeared to be a fall 1995/spring 1996 burton alp 6.3. if Mr. Bordy rode the same equipment in similar prevailing conditions he would indeed have rode very similarly to NSR . i concede that Mr. Bordy would probably have ridden better--but just marginally. i've never met NSR or seen him ride in person nor have i met Mr. Bordy but i have had the pleasure of seeing him ride (EXTREMELY WELL) in person. i admit that i am guessing but NSR probably isn't a slouch either. wonder what NSR could do on Mr. Bordy's great equipment?

    i have always liked Mr. Bordy as a racer and value his perception and knowledge of all things alpine related but even he will admit that his judgment is not always 100%. "Lot of errors in his fundamentals based on current technique" but NSR was not on current equipment. if he were then Mr. Bordy would not have noticed "Lot of errors in his fundamentals based on current technique." NSR was on an alp! that's why he rode the way he did. there's no reason to rudely cut into a person for his equipment choices. people will not adopt, upgrade, trade up or whatever for many reasons.

    are they just cheap bas*ards or is it because they are independent thinkers who don't feel that it is necessary to spend money needlessly? the keyword is needlessly because they don't NEED to ride a certain way or at a certain speed or on a certain board or whatever the fashion/equipment arbiters dictate to be de rigueur. obviously it's not the price as alpine snowboarding is a lot cheaper than a lot of other hobbies--golf anyone?

    as for the safety issue it's a red herring. if you know the board has a soft nose and you fold it then whose fault is it? the board's? if a newbie is a student and admittedly on a tight budget and furthermore essentially already has her heart set on the ultraprime that she rode on a TRY B4 BUYING basis and was just asking for a gentle nudge to take the plunge into hardbooting then we certainly did a good job of DISCOURAGING her from starting in the first place (or at best delaying her start.) how many beginners outperform their boards? did we take into account NADIA'S circumstances before the knee jerk responses? did we just discount her 11 years of softboot experience to the point where she couldn't identify an imminent nose fold?

    RDY_2_CARVE said "I personally would have bailed on this site after all this crapola" and it is so true. i don't know if stuff like this prevents people from hardbooting but i do know it can stop people from participating in bomberonline. i know in my case i was really excited about 10 years ago when i first found this great site only to be appalled by all the bickering and flaming going on that i didn't even bother registering. i simply logged off and never visited again for almost 10 years. i even attended a couple of colorado expression sessions on my skiis just to watch and learn from the carvers but remained anonymous because i was afraid of a total stranger from bomberonline suddenly going ballistic on me for no apparent reason. if i stayed away for 10 years, probably a lot of others did also--i hope nadia will be able to see past the stupid bickering on this thread and appreciate bomberonline for the fabulous resource that it truly is.

    i'm kinda disgusted by this thread to offer any helpful advice to nadia but i'll sleep on it and try again on the weekend. ironically ALL the advice for and against nadia's burton choices are excellent. it's just all the irrelevant non sequiturs clouding over the advice. if you (nadia) can get a good deal on the ultraprime then do it. it's late and i'll explain later in the week. i have been buying boards for a long time and have never resold any. only gave a few away to young kids without money who wanted to hardboot so essentially i have more than enough boards for my own good. i'll send you my ultraprime for free if all this bickering has delayed your decision so long that you missed your opportunity to get a good deal on one.

    i got mine at yyz canuck last week. a set of 4 cost $6.50 cdn--surprisingly cheap as i remember paying about $30 cdn for similar overpriced cheesy plastic burton vari-cants back about 10 or 15 years ago.

    these have uni-directional spines that only line up in the canted position. they can NOT be offset for lift only (zero canting) by reversing one piece like you can with the spineless stock canting pieces that come with the older f2 bindings. also the yyz canuck cants are made of a durable (very stiff) abs-like plastic so they can't be trimmed in case of an inexact fit. i wasn't aware of this and thought Andrea was being excessively picky about me measuring the cant and was originally annoyed at this seemingly excessive reverence for detail. wtf? i was certain i could just trim it to fit--as usual i am frequently wrong, BUT NEVER UNCERTAIN!

    i am posting a picture of both the original cant (red coloured) and the spined yyz canuck cant (black coloured) to ensure that you don't waste your money buying the wrong item. email yyz canuck as they respond promptly and i am sure they have the solution for you.

    All the riding tips I got from you are really awesome. Now I slowly start to EC toeside for now and it's a wonderful feeling when you could laid it out nicely. I got to try and commit more and do more riding before the local hills shut down.

    At 1400 Hrs my legs started to hurt and had to leave you guys.

    thanks for showing me around last sunday. the place has changed so much in ten years that i would have gotten lost numerous times if not for your expert guidance.

    i was surprised by how much snow was up there for this late in the season. ruwi and BlueB's constant ECing prompted me to dig out my old bauer/nerva flicks. during my search i found the original RIDE THE EDGE vhs tape that i misplaced about 8 years ago! i'll transfer this stuff onto a dvd and give it to you up at grouse this weekend. i paid for the original copy back in 1995 and still have the receipt in case some copyright goon investigates--i am sure i am allowed to make a backup copy in a non-commercial scenario. you guys will have a kick watching some of my old carving videos as i even have one of craig kelly and jose fernandez running slalom gates.

    it was a great day on sunday both in the ski area and on the drive up the access road. here are 2 pics (one of the ski area snowpack and one from the 5km viewpoint.) i think my dog loyal almost had as much fun as i did. i look forward to riding with you guys up at whistler on the 20th.

    i just got back thursday from skiing at whistler and didn't catch up on this forum until now. thanks for the ticket. i just emailed you in case you don't see this thread in time. i'm driving up early to let my dog run around in the backcountry (he loves exploring on the old BLT trail at cypress.)

    i snowboarded with ruwi up at grouse today and i really gave the silberfeil 172 a workout--what a great board! long drawn out turns balanced on the side cut (releasing across the fall line surf style) and aggressive highly angulated slalom turns (decambering and releasing down the fall line.) i was surprised how tightly the 172 can turn!

    too bad some out of control beginner skier gouged up my brand new topsheet. luckily, no serious damage--just a few ugly ski edge marks. i had already been standing in the lift line for about 5 minutes when this 250 pound moron crashed into the liftline from about 200 meters away. i saw him but couldn't get away as everyone was boxed in at the crowded liftline like a tokyo subway car. all i could do was curse mentally and brace myself for the inevitable.

    i can't wait to ride the silberfeil again tomorrow. ya gotta try it out.

  9. Monday nite was good varving condition. Started at around 1830 Hrs., the Cut was busy for a while then got better after 1.5 hrs as more people started leaving. I noticed in the parking lot was overflowing a bit when I arrived, nice weather, lots of people still on holidays. I didn't venture to the other olympic chair for the blue and mogul runs but if it is groomed in the morning, it will have a good part for descent carving. The upper peak mogul field is a short steep descent. Haven't been there with alpine, only with twin tips for good quick turns. I will stay in the Heaven's sake narrow trail joining the lower peak if riding with alpine. I will be on the mountain by 1800 Hrs. Please look for Gordon Stead, he could be riding his option alpine board. He emailed me back that he be will up there. I e-mailed Doug today and hope he can join too. He went to Whistler last Sat. with some guest from Ontario and I believe he might still be there or just about to leave, not sure. He was disappointed that he couldn't get hold of his Silberfeil before he left for Whistler from Canada Post due to Easter Holidays.

    i finally got the silberfeil 172 in my hot little hands now and will mount the bindings and put a spring texture on it before i go to sleep tonight. i picked it up a few hours ago on my way back from whistler. sorry i missed the cypress crew on grouse but i will see you guys up at whistler on april 20 if not before. you guys are welcome to try out the silberfeil anytime after i give it its maiden voyage this saturday.

    it didn't matter that i did not get my silberfeil before i went to whistler as i ended up skiing the entire 5 days. my spineless friend's new fiance (26 years old!!!) made a disparaging remark about idiot alpine snowboarders cutting people off by zigzagging left and right so he asked me to ski the entire weekend and not mention that i also snowboarded. what a spineless wimp--p****whipped already! i guess rod serling was right when one of his characters from his twilight zone series utters the line: "when a man marries a woman half his age he deserves EVERYTHING he gets!"

  10. Sorry guys for not showing up. Teaching at Grouse this entire spring break. Was looking good in the morning 4 drop in students with 5 instructors, ended up having 1 level 2. Schedule shows I will be done at 1400 Hrs and head to Cypress later. I was wrong, the hill was invaded by students at noon. Ended up with 8 level 1's, then 2 consecutive 1.5 hr privates and wasn't done until 6 PM. The sun was out and excellent carving condition so I just put on my Hardboots and did my runs right there at Grouse. I did a few runs in the morning but was foggy and ended up wiping out and landed in my back on the last run, right side is sore now, will take it easy today, just teaching maybe. That Black beauty 4WD is awesome.

    I got your pics from my office mail too. You are some speed maniac. You and Roy should hook up together, he is a maniac skateboarder too I heard.

    For riding together at Cypress, I will be at Cypress This Sunday, me and Boris normally are able to do some runs before teaching with the rest like Dave, Roy, Pierre otherwise I will be at Grouse until Sat teaching. But you mentioned you are going to Whistler. Maybe we should all go to Whistler one day.

    Unfornately I'm phoneless this time, lost my cell last Mon.

    i'm still keeping my fingers crossed that the silberfeil will be at the post office tomorrow. hope we can meet for a few runs on friday at grouse as i want to see you ripping on your new prior 4wd. i won't be able to make it to grouse on saturday as my friends got an earlier flight so we will be heading up to whistler on saturday instead of sunday.

    i'll be back thursday so my silberfeil will definitely be here by then and you can try it next weekend for sure.

  11. I was expecting either slush or chopped/bumped fresh so I brought the Tanker and (luckilly) Speed Wide. My prediction was wrong - we ended up with super compact wet snow, the kind that looks almost like ice, but when you edge it bites right in for super nice grip. Not even too bumped as the day wasn't busy. Roy and I rode from 4:30 to 8ish, when it started freezing. Daylight is nice and long now...

    We saw Dave's monster trenches from earlier in the day, but he must have left before we showed up. Also, we met a mid-aged hardbooting lady on a Nitro, with her son on softies. We chatted briefly to her but didn't ride together.

    Roy really looks good on his blue 4WD, he performed some of his best carves so far. For the first time he held his turns a bit uphill.

    I still feel out of shape after few weeks of sickness, but was quite in the groove, technic-wise. Speed Wide is quite a workout when I ride it SL style, but nice when I relax a bit and ride the the sidecut surf-style. Rotation relly helps with wider board...

    I'll be teching/riding on Friday and Roy would just play whole day long.

    Whistler is planed for Sunday April 20th, not for this Sunday. I'll do my normal teaching shift this Sunday. Cypress should be closed by that date.

    i would rather join you guys at a venue other than cypress so i'll see you at whistler on april 20th if not before. for personal reasons i have refused to snowboard at cypress since 1998. it was just the excitement of being able to compare my 172 with roy's 168 that made me reluctantly agree to come to cypress in the first place--i am glad that i will now have a chance to do so at whistler instead of cypress.

    btw since i can't join you at cypress (because i am a stubborn old man with the memory of an elephant) i will pay for your lift ticket if you want ever want to come up for a carving session at grouse. lunch is on me also.

    i just checked my tracking number on the canada post website and the only info it shows is that the silberfeil left the rexdale ontario post office on march 13th but doesn't show where it is as of today. however the website shows march 19th as the delivery date so hopefully it will arrive as scheduled and you can try it out on friday. can one of us park at the bottom and then we go up the mountain in one car? i would like to ride my skateboard down the cypress bowl road after snowboarding.

    here are the 2 pictures of skating down c.o.p. ski area that we talked about when i met you at grouse on saturday--i tried emailing them to you but just ended up getting an out of office reply since you are on holidays until next monday. btw i'm the guy in the purple motorcycle leathers and the "homemade cutting board/blue jean armor" lol.

  13. not sure...this Brian Peck is 18, doesn't snowboard, used to live in west hartford, skates slalom, slide and especially downhill uses the name Sofa King on Silverfish. However he recently moved to Vancouver for the winter, he's coming back to Ct for the summer and then probably a permanent move to Canukistan. He's fun to skate with especially downhill, I always learn when I skate with him and I've been skating for 35 years.

    phoned malcolm and he confirmed it's the same brian peck from connecticut. guess we'll have to drag brian out skating with us this tuesday night. i better eat my wheaties beforehand as i already have enough trouble keeping up with 20 year old malcolm on his skateboard--brian will be tougher as he's only 18 (i just realize i'm skating with guys about a third my age--suddenly i feel very old.)

    i got sidetracked by the name brian peck. my original reason for posting was that you shouldn't let the long wheelbase of the demonseed dissuade you. the flex of a demonseed allows the trucks to steepen/quicken and hence turn more like a shorter board than the much stiffer landyachtz evo (mentioned in the second post of this thread.) i've always thought of landyachtz evos as the f2 speedsters (short lengths with long sidecuts) and rayne demonseeds as prior wcrs (long lengths with small sidecuts) of the skateboard world. since you wouldn't hesitate to ride a longer than normal prior neither should you balk at the extra length of a demonseed.

    before i inadvertently hijack this thread, the person who started this thread (LOUIS) wanted to use his board mainly for commuting so i think his choice of skateboard would be dictated mostly by his daily route. i happen to own both the evo and the demonseed and prefer the evo when my route is fairly straight with long drawn out turns while i always take the demonseed when skating very turny and twisty roads.

    good call on the slider gloves--i even wear a cutting board on my left (regular footed) butt cheek. for similar reasons i glue a piece of ballistic nylon to the left butt cheek of my snowboard pants and completely cover the palms of my snowboard gloves with duct tape. i also found that wearing a rear view mirror on my helmet (skating not snowboarding) allows me to bust out high speed power slides (even in heavy traffic.) if you can ignore all the other skaters who laugh at your gear you will reap many safety benefits as well as save lots of money on shoes as i rarely need to footbrake.

    hope this info helps louis choose to take up skateboard commuting.

  14. I went out skating with Sofaking/Brian Peck (young speedfreak and slalom geek) Wednesday on a local hill. He got bored with lots of traction (lime BigZigs) and threw on a set of blue Krypto's so he could drift his speedboard. Mind you I'm talking 30mph slides and such but after watching him for a bit I was convinced that I needed to at least try so i now have a set of Blue Krypto's on the way to practice sliding my speedboard....

    i just stumbled back on this site (after about a 10 year absence) looking for info on silberfeils. is this the same BRIAN PECK who goes to school at SFU in burnaby? if so, does he hardboot snowboard also? i was trying to avoid him and his roomie malcolm until the snow melted. i refuse to waste time skateboarding when there is still good snow waiting to be carved.
