  1. I looked at the Pentaquark last year and leaving their questionable “designed only for the real men” macho marketing aside, I think it had like a 260 waist with an 8.5 sidecut.

Those numbers may not be ideal for all riders; and it’s designed for all types of riding, not carving-specific. The big benefit of custom is to be able to tweak those numbers to fit your preference.

FWIW #1: I know from experience that you can, in fact use a carbon XV highback on the CV chassis – as long as you use at least moderate forward lean. If you like your highbacks very upright, no go because of the positioning block location on the highback (lower on VX/XF, higher on CV).

Yup, I played around with this as well a while back to try and get the higher CV heelcup. I didn’t like as much forward lean on my front leg and I ended up with CV front, XV rear. It worked but I’d be a bit curious about longer-term highback torque stress from the alternate positioning.

  3. Agreed. My Coiler has an 11.5m (?) sidecut, but when Bruce was showing me the numbers it was clear that 1) the sidecut at any given point on the edge varies quite considerably, 2) for these type of boards, the more important thing from a ride characteristic appears to be how the sidecut changes along the edge, and 3) board flex patterns can really emphasize these sidecut changes and work in parallel.

In comparison to my board’s 11.5m average, I think the actual sidecut is longer at the nose, much tighter at the front binding, a bit tighter at the rear binding, and way longer off the tail.

So 11.5m is useful, but for boards with variable sidecut (which I think is most of them nowadays) it doesn’t explain how two boards with the same average number might act quite differently in practice.

  4. There were a couple pairs in the For Sale section. I just got a pair a couple days ago for my MS boots, will mold them in the fall.

For hard boots the only issue with height is that the liner has to fit over my calves, which can be uncomfortable at the very top. Otherwise my legs don’t flex between my ankles and knees…..
