  1. I feel like you keep bringing up about how easy it is to make money. Is this some sort of get rich without doing anything scheme? Ski 100 days a year and still make 200k sort of thing? Sanitation workers and teachers and nurses shouldn’t be allowed to ski with the rest of us?

Wtf does any of this have to do with lazy people? Is the suggestion “poorer people don’t ski as well?” “Poorer people aren’t as nice to associate with”? “The notorious lower-class skier ruins everything?”

Just a super weird take. I make money and could probably afford one of the various local private hills but have no interest in increasing my season’s pass costs. I grew up sneaking all-day runs from a half-day pass because we couldn’t afford the tickets and shadowing the snowboard instructors because I couldn’t buy lessons. That doesn’t mean I couldn’t figure out how to get down the hill properly.

    just strange

Congestion, lack of clearly communicated safety standards, lack of enforcement of said standards.  Given the development of technology it isn't difficult to envision a network of cameras served by a AI system that impartially monitors, warns and ultimately revokes the lift passes of anybody violating safety standards.  People are understandably uncomfortable with this kind of monitoring (especially given the potential abuses), but the ski areas could pledge to not share the data with any external entities except for law enforcement serving a warrant?  This kind of system would likely be able to be just as open to being lenient depending on conditions; open black slope with no other riders: knock yourself out, green slope with congestion: just keep your speed down.  It doesn't have to be a zero fault system, just weed out the smooth-brained star-fish gapers.

Sounds wonderful. Let’s introduce it on the roads too!! Panopticon for all!

  3. How about putting some responsibility on ski hills to drill this into the brains of their patrons? I have yet to see a lift pole that has “the uphill skier is always responsible” or “we will revoke your pass if you do not ski in control and yield To downhill skiers” stamped on it while we slowly rumble past.

I continue to believe that legal action is not the answer to the problem. That is just a world of hurt and terribleness.

  4. Interesting. Sounds like a different approach to nose sidecut/design. I always enjoy those type of nuances on otherwise similar boards. I don’t think your Angrry is a Contra design (?) but I’ve definitely found Contra does have a slower initial turn hookup until you can get it high up on edge, it does not grab and spit you into the turn….

  5. Super interesting. I’ve always positioned the binding plates to angle the slots across the board — possibly because standard insert stance width seems to work for me at 19 3/4 on my boards, and I don’t need to adjust width.  I always have my boots centred on the binding, and always move the bindings themselves slightly across the board toeside/heelside in order to get the boots perpendicular over the edge on both sides.

Speaking of that G bias, what is the concern being fixed by using underhang? A body positioning issue or a bootout issue?

  6. Interesting, this is likely a new topic so as to not distract from this beautiful, confusingly-used board. 😀

I’ve always centred the boot over the middle of the binding, then angle bindings until perpendicular over the edges. But in almost no case will I get directly over both toe/heel, so I typically adjust the bindings slightly toe/heel (along with stance angle) to centre the boot over the board edges.

But my boots are always centred on the binding. It sounds like everyone else uses the slots for adjusting stance width, but the binding is always placed on the middle of the board and you offset the boot on the binding to get perpendicular over the edges? 😀

  7. I mean let me pick some nits here, the soundtrack is brutal and the braided ponytail is a questionable fashion choice at best…..but cannot doubt the riding. 😆 Sigi is a rare top rider who has quite a lot of third-person riding footage, and I probably spend an hour or two every year watching his form. Just beautiful stuff.

  8. Funny, I just took out some old Burton Mission GT bindings I had that had a little wing, from 2002 or so….was doing some hackathon with that wing for some carving experiments. Same thing happened, cracked one strap and one hiback pretty easily, plastic was just brittle af. Time comes for us all!

This put a Smile on my face...nothing here but some turns...

This Season in particular, there is a major shift going on in SB Riding...at least here at Milkland they are wanting to Carve...

    Glad to see it...

A whole lot of nothing on the carving front other than that one toeside…..but damn nice cord and a great vibe, really cool video!

@ShortcutToMoncton Have you met James? I suspect not.

James loves carving, wants to promote carving, and relishes the challenge of carving in soft boots. He is great company to ride with.

Looks like you’re Patient Zero for my amazing plan to get outrage views! Smash that Like button and Subscribe for more anti-softboot content…..

    😜

I’m just kidding around, but count me in as an avid consumer! I love James’ softboot commentary (at least when he sticks to an easily digestible 40 minutes or so, just like a normal Youtuber), and I would honestly be super excited about a little hardboot-specific series from ASB and/or Jack.

I’ve mentioned this before — I’m surprised that some of the pro riders don’t seem interested in sharing this type of stuff. But I guess it’s such a niche sport that it’s not worth the extra effort when a quick shot of a starting gate and hilltop sunset will probably get triple the likes.

(not to give James any ideas…)

  11. I thought to follow up and say that I read all of those old articles 20+ years ago (or whenever it was) and loved them….the content is still true but it looks so antiquated to read them now, along with the small pictures.

It would be super amazingly helpful if this was a YouTube series. Take this article and a nice new iPhone and a buddy who can ski and hold a phone, spend a couple hours getting some footage, and create a 3-to-4-minute short video summarizing each article….

This is 2024; reading is for old people. 😂

You could even call the channel “@JamesCherrysucks” or something and really kick off some social beefs with the Cherryhive….really milk those outrage views for all it’s worth

  12. Yeah, the PowerRides are causing me some instep discomfort & slight bruising as well just on the inside top of my feet. It’s where the bottom Powerride tongue pushes down when my ankles push forward and flex the top of the insert….so it does mean it’s working! I have a high instep and it’s a pressure problem in many liners/boots.

I had them in for 5 hours yesterday (in what might be the last day of the season this year) and it was probably too much. Usually I spend an hour or so warming up without them, then stick them in for a couple hours, then remove. They are great for hard carving!

  13. Yeah the soft snow comment clicked for me. We usually have a couple inches at most before you’re scraping hardpack of course. And you do ride with straighter legs as well. 😄
