Dave Winters
A couple guys asked me to report on our day at Ski Cooper, so... We had a great day. It was a mid-week day, and we lucked out with perfect weather; calm, cool and our famous Colorado bluebird skies. Cooper is a small ski area by Colorado standards, only 1,200 vertical feet. Two chairlifts, both slow, one double and one triple. They seem so slow if your're used to the high-speed quads, they average 8-11 minutes. The runs are wide and long and have a really consistent sustained pitch. No catwalks at all to interrupt your run. All greens and blues. The grooming was good. I think they must only have one machine and it only grooms two or three runs per night. But there's so little traffic the runs are still smooth two and three days later. It's all natural snow, they don't make snow at all, so the quality is very consistent. It was firm and super grippy. Did I mention the crowd factor... or lack thereof? There's nobody there. Almost. The lifties seem glad to have something to do when you come along. It's in the middle of nowhere, closer to Leadville than Midturn. There's no lodging at the ski area. We stayed in a cabin up at Twin Lakes. Prices? $36, and I had a coupon for $8 off that! So... Cons: The lack of any steep terrain whatsoever. Even the runs marked as black diamond are blues at best. Remote location. No on-site lodging. (These are pros in disguise) Pros: Long, wide, consistent pitch runs. Low price. No crowds. Breathtaking views. Good grooming. Firm, all natual snow. Not necessarily in that order. I'd get bored riding it every day, but for one or two days it's a real treat. Sorry, no pics, my camera is fubar.
