boarderboy
Yes, campers, we truly are in the dog days here. (See early pages of To Kill a Mockingbird for eloquent description.) 5:55 p.m. EDT, it's frickin 99 degrees and the only real question is - did we make 100? (apparently not) NWS RDU ...HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 8 PM EDT THIS EVENING... HIGH TEMPERATURES TODAY ARE EXPECTED TO REACH 100 DEGREES ACROSS THE SANDHILLS...TRIANGLE AND COASTAL PLAIN. THESE HIGH TEMPERATURES...COMBINED WITH THE HUMIDITY...WILL CREATE HEAT INDICES NEAR 105 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON...PRIMARILY BETWEEN 3 AND 6 PM. I've experienced much hotter temps in the desert southwest and a couple days' hiking the Dakota badlands in August. But nothing, nothing in my experience (OK there was Guam and 'Nam) comes close to a Carolina summer when the Gulf Stream is pumpin water vapor like mad, it rains most every pm, and then the oaks and hickories and poplars transpire the stuff right back into the piedmont sauna the next day. Yuck!! p.s. "Close Encounters of the Copperhead Kind" in last five days - 3. Number of serpents that survived - 1. The little pit vipers are everywhere this year. Thinking of buyin a .410 single shot! Friend got bitten few weeks ago. Hospitalized for a day... :(:(
