  1.

O.K., this has probably been discussed before, and maybe should be on the Racing forum, but it's been bugging me for years.

So, the question is, does a heavier rider have an advantage in a race regardless of ability and wax. I say this is a myth.

Theoretically, now: two riders, same ability, boards and wax. One weighs 130 lbs and one weighs 230 lbs. Does the heavier rider reach the finish faster?

Physics 101 says no ( I think). We'll go back to the 16th century when Galileo dropped two balls the same size but different weights off the leaning tower of Pisa and they hit the ground at the same time.

In fact, I would say the lighter rider would have an advantage due to less wind resistance!

Now, bigger athletes have bigger, stronger legs and can pump out of turns more powerfully, that's not part of this discussion.

    What do y'all think?

  2. O.K., friends-
My youngest son, Cody "Shrimpy" Winters is leaving to start his winter season snowboarding in Europe.
As you know, this is an Olympic year, and he has a shot to represent the USA in Beijing in February.
This kid works his ass off all summer to be able to afford to do this, but he came up a little short and could sure use your help!
He has started a Go Fund Me campaign. Please check it out and you can read all about his story and give what you can.
    Thanks!

  3. Ha!

So many things wrong with that pic!

-The two courses are the same color.

-The gates are set up the same way...unless it's a delay gate, which I doubt.

-Looks like there's course dye, and it goes around the long poles in both courses.

    - And of course, the rider is going around the long poles.

  4. Interestingly, but I suppose a little off topic, the last Slash and Burn in 2020 featured a good mix of riders from every discipline in the top ten of Open Class. Shrimpy (PGS PSL) was second to Taylor Gold (HP) (by 6/100ths!) and Mick Dierdorff (BX) Bronze.

At the end they have a switch race. All riders throw in $5.00 and winner takes all. You have to ride switch. Taylor won the money. I remember I did the math and his time switch would have been 8th in the regular race!

  5. Great discussion.

For what it's worth, the Slash and Burn Banked Slalom in Steamboat officially bans hardboots. And there's even a kind of gentlemen's agreement on not using BX race boards. I think the idea is to level the playing field as much as possible to make it a test of raw  talent rather than gear.
