  1. No scientific analysis here, but I've never seen ski bindings with any give, other than complete release. Why would you want any give in the interface between your boots and your board?

I guess some riders like to consciously think about all those continuous small mental and physical compensations needed when they feel the binding give as they ride.

I personally like to feel locked in and let the board and terrain tell me what needs to be done next. I hated my Burton Race Plates. They were like limp noodles. When I move, I expect the board to react. Not have the bindings react and then the board after the bindings get their Sh!t together. I am a bigger, heavier rider. I suspect that the bigger you are, the more movement can be expected from non Bomber bindings.

    Just my $.02.

  2. I would say less than a new one. ;) I could order one and drive up the road to Bruce's shop and pick it up. But I don't want to wait until March or later. I have the shorter, wider board bug right now. I also don't generally offer up a price for something I am looking to buy. I let the seller tell me what he wants.

  3. Yep, OT:

Won't happen. The American consumer is wedded to the what I call the "Triple C Ranch" - Cheap Chinese Crap. People just LOVE Walmart, cause of the "low, low, prices" -- why low? It's all made in PRC. You just can't compete with the labor differential...

Yep, except for one thing. When the only people who are making money, work in the downsized offices of major corporations that make nothing in North America, and everyone else is out of work or working at McDonalds, even Walmart won't be able to get prices low enough. Without manufacturing in our countries, no one will have any money to spend. You can't be a country of service businesses and have a healthy economy. And do you know the other reason Walmart has those low low prices? They have the power to squeeze the life out of supplier when it comes to price. I know a few local manufacturing companies that refuse to sell to Walmart because of their pricing requirements. They are in every other retailer but not Walmart. In their opinion, it is better to sell slightly less and hold your margin, than to sell more volume at almost breakeven. Less of manufacturing, expenses, labour, for more money and you don't have to bow to the Hitler-like rules Walmart sets out. F**k Walmart!

Heck, that melamine tragedy that killed and hospitalized hundreds or thousands of Chinese babies shows you what kind of lawless third world country we are dealing with. I can't believe that the lemmings that are Americans and Canadians are so stupid to as to tolerate that kind of business model no matter how cheap the goods are. Hope Obama taxes the Sh!t out of any company that has factories outside NAFTA. Might help. Na, a good case of Darwinism is at work here. We need to weed out the dead wood, sense of entitlement and shat work ethic in North America.

Sorry for the OT. I'm done now.

  4. Kinda OT I know, but Arc'teryx clothing is also made in China now...but retailing for the same price as when it was built in BC. Hard for me to swallow that, when I know that their production costs must have dropped significantly. Kind of the same thing for a made-in-China Tanker too, no?

We are going to see a strong wave of Patriotism in both Canada and the US regarding buying from companies who do this. You are right. If the manufacturing cost went down, and they keep the same prices or raise them, their profits just skyrocketed. And the worst part is they took jobs away from our continent to do it. The I don't mind paying more for Canadian/US made goods. The problem is that more of us need to hit the companies harder by not buying, and voicing why we are not buying. Bring the manufacturing back to North America. We cannot sustain our economy by only being in the service business. We have to manufacture goods here to stay afloat.

These difficult economic times will define how we buy and where the companies manufacture their goods. I can't wait to see the North American companies that build unsafe, non regulated toys in China come back to North America with their tails between their legs and open factories here again, because we are all fed up. :angryfire

  5. Mansfield is open to the public Wed to Fri as long as it not Mens or Ladies day on the Friday. My team, Ontario Snowboard Club, also trains there on the occasional Thursday, and Friday. Its a great hill, they have about 10 members that are also ripping on boards, and a couple of the guys in charge are good plate riders too. They may even be able to set you up with a lesson if you want, as CASI just ran a carving instructor course at Mansfield, so them may have people on there staff that are certified.

Does Gord still work there? I think he is certified.

  6. I'm afraid you are an outright liar as you may have more insight here than the rest of us. You own the board that I broke my ankle on . The reason you own it is after I did the full front flip, I landed on the tail and bent it upwards a bit. So you are riding a semi decambered board for the last couple seasons. Since you ordered a new one, I guess it sucks. Thats it, proven, I'm right , may as well end the thread right here;)

When you get the new board, I'll take a trade in and bend the front and Voila!

Instant proto. This was an AM board that by todays standards had a very stiff tip and tail so we may be onto something here.

If nothing else I can get back in the park and pipe with it

Careful Bruce, if you come to Osler again this year with all the snow we have already now, it could happen again! ;)

  7. Rammy, FYI. I have 10 (5E) width feet. Footwear is always an issue (only buy NB sneakers) because of the width. A couple of years back I tried every boot in the shop (@ The Starting Gate) and ended up with Head Stratos, they had the best fit for me.

Damn, I wish we had more local shops that had decent choices in Alpine gear. I bought my first pair of boots from a retailer that went bust over 10 yrs ago. Haven't had any others available to try stuff on so I kept using them. I got sick of waiting so I just got my second pair late last year online. Head Stratos Pro. Never been happier.

  8. This might be petty, but yer killin me with the "center meters" It would like me calling "inches" "ginches"

Its centimeters measured in cm, not CM. but who cares.:biggthump

My rant for the day. Bracing for the Flame...

And, owning an Olympic Donek FC1, these boards rule. my $0.02

Wow! Every ski and snowboard manufacturer uses centimeters as the unit to represent its length. I would have thought that it would be common knowledge in a forum like this.

    Guess not.

  9. Wow, I have never had that level of service from FedEx or any other carrier. Mostly ontime and undamaged.

I would like to ask a question about something you mentioned. You said that you sent boards to Mass for tuning. In the spirit of not wanting to complicate my life with variables beyond my control whenever possible, why would you FedEx snowboards to tuning shops that are states away from you? Are they that much better than your local board tuning shop? Do they have equipment or expertise that is not commonly and widely available? Maybe in Jersey you don't actually have boardshops, I don't know. But sending boards out and taking the risk of anything happening to them seems pointless to me. It is bad enough when you send one out that has been sold to someone. I worry the whole time it is in transit.

    Sorry for the thread jack.
