I am in Mammoth and have been since Wed. the 7th. Temps are hitting low 50's on the hill. If you get out for first chair Stump Alley and the runs off of it are acceptable and I would rate the snow on a 1-5 scale for carving (5 being best) at a 3-4 depending on the run. Snow gets better as you go higher but those steeps are beyond my skill level.

Here's to hoping for a "Miracle March"!

I rode June on Saturday 3-8. It was a bit icy and did not exude a lot of confidence when setting an edge. Weather was fantastic however. I think a good groom could dial it in though.

Glad to see the site back online! Joe, was great meeting and riding with you and your buds at Mammoth recently. Sorry I missed Mr. Garrow and the Huntington Beach "storm trooper" ha, how those hard boots treating you Lance? I was able to locate another 188 Burner and as of today it should be shipped out. Hit me up with any other dates that may arise and I will attempt to get up there to share some turns with you guys. Free lunch to anyone who can help me tame the dragon that is the heelside turn grrrrr...

As for riding, a dismal start to the season as we all know. I am going to Mammoth on Feb 8th for a few. Keep the faith.

I rode my first carving board at Mammoth Mountain. This was probably in the late 80's/early 90's. Back then there were a couple shops that carried carving boards. "Storm Riders" and "Wave Rave". I was wearing Raichlee Snowboarders (which I still own) and renting a PJ asym, good times ha ha. Back then I saw a few other carvers but I only get 10 or so days a year so sightings of fellow carving folk were slim.

I still ride Mammoth and am typing this while on vacation in Mammoth now. From then to now I have seen an increase in carving. There are no more alpine rentals in Mammoth, save a few shorty Burton Primes but they offer no bindings or boots so I think they just keep them around for museum potential. Point being I see carvers nearly every time now. Also while I still get stares or questions when I show up early on a split tail SIMS Burner, I also get a thumbs up or accolades from strangers who recognize an alpine board and often comment on how artistic an alpine rider looks when laying down clean arcs. In summary I see more riders and more people recognize the specific discipline of how we ride. I hope this is a continuing trend and we can continue to grow the sport. If not I will still ride with a smile knowing I have found the purest way to ride a snowboard as I continue to hone my ability on my 10 days a year. Let there be arcs!

Greetings All! So I have a size 13 foot. I currently use Head Stratos Pros (orange ones). I am wondering if anyone knows if the sole length of the different manufacturers varies enough to consider buying one over the other. With such a large foot angles can get tricky and trying to ride a narrow board can cause steeper angles still.

Porta Pros are amazing. I am on my second pair. I currently have the Sporta Pros. They are adjustable and can have the band on top the head or on the neck, so may be same model as you. Overall they are the best sounding and most bass responsive I have listened to and you cannot beat the price. Was just not sure if they will sync with the helmet, will let you know. For those reading this both models are exceptional and the have over 1200 4 star or better reviews on Amazon. Plus for 23 bucks you just cannot beat them!!!:lol:

I know I know, I should not be using headphones when making wide sweeping turns but I just got my first helmet, and if by chance I wanted to listen to some relaxing Gregorian chants, was wondering if anyone had any feedback on what the best sounding headphones/ear buds are that are helmet friendly (Smith Vantage Helmet). Yes, if June reopens as planned I will be "all in". If Mammoth gets another drop I will be heading up ASAP. Otherwise my first scheduled trip is not til January 12th. Not sure I can ever go south cal boarding again, we will see...

1989 Bought a Kemper Aggressor 170 with 3 straps-My first board. Actually hated this pig.

1990-96 Dabbled 5-10 days out of 200+ a season on alpine specific with ski-boots/ Softies 21 frnt/ 9 back from custom lib's to custom k2's and burtons. Green, air 6!

97-2000 Softies and dabbling on 162 ultra prime and freecarve boots/ ouch

2000- present not much has changed... Riding more BX shapes. Never a board off the rack again. Customs from here on out.

My bad I failed to completely read your initial post/list. I saw the details. I initially only saw the pic and was immediately smitten ha. I have a 188 currently and am constantly fearful that I will snap the tail. Really like the purple graphics on yours though. Admittedly, the first time I rode the 188 I went 40 feet and fell over ha. About an hour later I was loving it. It has been a season and a half now and I really like that thing but find I have to hang it up after the early morning as it gets to crowded to push it or expand my control over it. Will keep you posted if I can find that spare dough in the couch cushions...

Like everybody else I was crushed when I opened my email and saw the letter from Gregory regarding June. The last carving session there with many of the gang was my first time returning to June since the first day I tried snowboarding some 24 years ago or so. On my return I found that it was an amazing day with some really great people, all celebrating and showing their passion for the sport in the way only a fringe sport can evoke. I left dedicated to the fact that I would return and that June was to become my new favorite place to ride. I am concerned for the town and what the closing of the resort will mean for the store owners. I do not foresee Mammoth selling June as it would merely create a competitive entity. I do think it will reopen if we are blessed with an abundant year of snowfall and they can recoup the losses but as others have mentioned this may take some time.

After I have won the multi-state lottery I will purchase June and make it an all carving mountain with perfectly graded slopes offering specific pitches for every taste, board type and riding style. Of course all carving session attendees will receive free life time passes and a new board of their choosing each year.

In the spirit of making lemonade, I am wondering if we all reached out to Mammoth what their response would be and if they might help us do the same there. Mambo is a well pitched run and does not receive a lot of traffic. Perhaps we can convince them to let us have our gathering there. Never hurts to try.

Whats up BarryJ,

I recently re-visited June Mountain after a 24 year hiatus. The first thing I noticed was how wide many of the runs were and that the pitch of a few were ideal for perfecting technique (Gunsmoke specifically!). It has a very chill atmosphere and it was nearly void of people and this was at the beginning of spring break. Worth a try in if you make it to the area.
