I recently transitioned from sofbooting to hardbooting and it's been incredible, but I have had some on and off pain with my back foot (left foot - I ride goofy)

Im using Deeluxe Track 325s. I measured my foot and checked the space with just foot in the shell and the boots seem to be the correct size.

Usually my feet are fine for the first half of the day, but once I reach the 2-3 hour mark I start having pain on the inside near my heel as well as the heel itself. (See attached pic)

I had my liners heat molded and they feel fine but after carving for several hours the pain shows up.

It feels like a pressure point just below my inner ankle, and numbness in my heel.

I also experience a bit of heel lift, which can be reduced by tightening the boot but that seems to cause the pressure point to hurt more.

I'm able to tighten all the buckles to the last notch and the top cuff buckle ends up being loose.

I was thinking of ordering shorter cuff cables to allow me to get the boot tighter potentially reducing heel lift, however I am nervous that the pressure point might feel worse. Would it be worth getting a fit set (foam pieces that can stick to inside of boot shell) to smooth out the pressure point? What about trying to re-mold the liners in the oven?

It hasn't really stopped me from riding, but it's definitely annoying. There is a professional boot fitter I could go see but it would be a 2.5 hour drive each way, so I'm hoping to find a way to solve it on my own.

Has anyone else experienced something similar?

I have exactly the same problem with my Deluxe 700T. I think a change of liner might help me.

BTS may help.  A newer board would definitely help.  My legs hurt just looking at that Rossi.

I will look into getting a newer board when this season is over and there are some sales. I nearly bought a new board a few months back, but we signed up for a mortgage which emptied the piggy bank entirely.

    😬

I was going to buy an 17/18 F2 Silberpfeil Vantage 162, or even push up to a n 19/20 SG Full Race Titan 163XT or a 20/21 SG Full Carve 163.

A bit of a stretch since I don't get to go that often but I rationalise it by imagining if I have a good board, I'll have even more fun and will go more often.

Thanks for the tips in any case!

I spend a lot of my riding on choppy piste... You can't back off... riding more flat/less inclination will bounce you around even more.  Typically choppy is softer so put that edge down and keep the knees loose.  Shorter less complete turns can help you stay on the edge.

The boots "cutting your feet to bits" sounds like your boots don't fit properly to begin with which can lead to a whole host of other issues.

Indeed. I bought second hand deeluxe hard-boots. The shells are in very good condition, but I think the insoles are either a bit too small for me, or have been molded to the previous owners feet - or both! (Thermo-Fit). I reckon I should try to get new insloles. The worst was the pinch under my ankles.... a full blister had bubbled up by the end of the day. Next time I will wrap that area with a bandage first as once the skin lifted, it was agonising.

    You can't back off...

That is good advice. I reckon I need to just go for it.

  4. I went boarding last week for the first time in 2 years and I must say it was tough. It had snowed quite a bit the few days previously and I found myself really fighting the piste to keep an edge down... it was cut-up pretty quickly after the first hour.

Where can I find some good tips on technique when it comes to carving with hard boots on choppy piste. The boots cut my feet to bits and my thigh muscle was burning with pain. Perhaps I am out of practice.

I feel bad that I considered switching back to my soft boots and a soft bindings on my old regular Burton board.

Any other beginner/ intermediate who have similar issues?

    🙂

  5. Thanks guys.

I have an old Rossi that I ride... you can see it here:

    https://justpaste.it/992nu

This "BX" one is for sale quite cheap... I was wondering would it feel very different to what I already have?

I have no specs - so if any detective has good eyes - I'd be curious to hear your opinion.

I also don't want to collect useless old boards.... and should save up for a higher quality new board.

still... when one see ads... it is hard to resist.

  6. Hello everyone

I have come across a snowboard for sale but cannot seem to find any info on the type of board it is.

The seller says it is an "Atlantica Bordercross Snowboard 160cm" and made in Austria.

Does anyone recognise this board? It is a used board and for sale at a low price - so I presume it is probably not much good?

    Here are some photos:

    Thanks.

@Charlie2021,  As you are already having fun with your Rossi, you could of course keep on with it focusing may be a bit more on alpine technique to improve your technique .

The board size seems ok for you as you consider yourself/are an intermediate alpine rider.

Totally true that a modern board will change your riding perspectives....so much joyful......but not absolutly necessary if money ( and time on the slopes) is a concern.....

    If new board....

    Board size : 162-168

Width : 20-21 cm due to your boot size

    SCR : around 9-11

Board flex : soft to medium

Board construction : rubber dampening.   Combined with Titanal would be Holy Grail but very expensive.

    Last point, you're from Barcelona.

Not a lot of Hardbooters around there...

I don't know where you usually ride, but I've been a snowboard instructor for 25 years at Grandvalira-Pas de la Casa Resort. A lot of people from Barcelona ski there....so if you're around.....we could share some technical knowledge through a few runs, lessons, whatever......just ask for Rodolphe at Pas de la Casa ski school.

Moltes gràcies Rodolphe! I have spent a week in Pas de la Casa before, and it was really wonderful. I guess time on the slopes in a big issue. Although from where I live to the resorts is 2-4 hours drive, the reality is that it is difficult to get to the mountains for more than 3 or 4 weekends per season. The advice to practice more is a good one. If I come to Pas de la Casa again, I will look for you. My daughter who is 5, will try skiing/boarding this year for the first time. Perhaps we can go to your school. Fins ara!

If you're seeing prices of 200-300 Euros for a never used Vantage from a few years ago, that's a great deal.  To get into Titanal (metal) construction, you would have to spend a lot more, as you've said.  However, if you think this is something you're going to be passionate about, it would be worth it.

Hi guys... so much detailed knowledge and advice. I must say, I feel very conflicted. I have found a new 2017 Vantage from a European warehouse for €200 plus shipping.

However, having read your tips and researched more, I must say it is very tempting to consider buying the likes of a Kessler The Alpine or something Titanium of that pedigree.

It may be wise for me to put in a good season on my old Rossi, try to improve my carving, and then be in a better position to choose a good board in the next off season.

    Mmmm. Hard choice.

    First world problems, eh!

I personally dont think that Vantage is any better from what you have now. Its a basic fiberglass board with woodcore and with single sidecut radius. Very similar with your old Rossi. I know its cheap and you are limited on amount of $$$. But I would search for modern used slalom multi various sidecut boards with 162/165 length. It will give you more of understanding of what is actual modern board is.

Any suggestions b.free? For modern used slalom multi various sidecut boards with 162/165 length? Some of the guys mentioned the 19/20 SG Full Race Titan 163XT, which costs about €800. Anything in the €300 - €400 range of interest?

It is a good point though... why spend €200 or €300 on a board that is the same as what I have?

  10.

    My tale takes another twist!

    I have found a great deal on both a 162cm and 168cm F2 Silberpfeil Vantage (2016/2017 model).

    Should I consider the the 168 as I am nearly 200lbs (86kg) ???

This is exciting. So cool have such constructive knowledgable feedback from you guys!

    Thanks!

Is that discounted price really that much? I would expect it to be three number starting with with 7

Hi Pokkis... I didn't investigate that fully... I just searched a price for that board.....  regardless, at this point in time I'd rather a number starting with a 2, and have no more than two more digits after it!

    😄🤣

Interesting note about that board Pokkis,

"DID YOU KNOW? – The 163 XT is the option for large boots – no boot outs!
This board is great for taller guys with bigger feet 9.5/10.0 (43/44) and up. "

I haven't thought about that. I wear size 45 boots!

At your height and weight (similar to mine) I would strongly recommend the 168 Vantage.  The 11m sidecut will be perfect, and not at all too long.  You'll appreciate the extra length, stability, and more relaxed manners compared to the 162.

@Charlie2021 You will be surprised HOW performing modern shapes are. Keep in mind that you will need some time to get accustomed to the new board...🙂

Good point. I have an extra set of hard boot bindings, so I can have my old Rossi as a back up - allowing me to easily do a morning with one board, and an afternoon with the other.

Time to start doing squats to try and build up those quad muscles... due to Covid it has been two years since I have been on the snow!

F2 Elim is softboot board... love it...

rode it in hardboots - it's too soft, you have babysit it in every turn... but still fun... I rode it for a season when broke alpine board

cheers. I thought that actually - when I started looking at images of the board. I think I will order the

    16/17  or the 17/18

    F2 Silberpfeil Vantage 162.

I can't wait to see what the difference is like compared to my old Rossi. I wonder how old it is? I think I read that they stopped making alpine boards over 20 years ago? A new 2017 board will surely have some advances.

    Thanks all!

You are totally correct Wulf! Thanks for the advice.

I will ask my final question choices.... and sorry to be so annoying - but this is very exciting!

Considering my situation - Old Rossi board, old 45 year old legs, going to the snow a few weekends per season... wanting to carve better... loving my hard boots and bindings.... which of these boards would you recommend.

I have found them all, new, at great prices! I appreciate they are slightly older models... but I think it would be a change from my ancient Rossi!

I think Santa Claus may come early this year!

    16/17 F2 Silberpfeil Vantage 162

    17/18 F2 Silberpfeil Vantage 162

    17/18 F2 Eliminator 163

    18/19 F2 Eliminator 163

    19/20 F2 Eliminator 163

    Thanks for your patience everyone.

  15. Chicos! So much positive, generous and helpful advice. You really have the right attitude for a forum. So many times one can find snarky, snide and sarcastic "tips" on forums. None of that here. Thank you.

You are correct - I am happy with my old Rossi. In comparison to battling my old Burton Bullet on the piste - this thing is a joy. However, at times it fees like it has a few drawbacks:

    1. When I try to join up some turns, it is difficult to do. I find it hard to link them together.

    2. I find that I am turning quite often to control my speed.

That said - I probably need to get more "snow time" down and to build up my experience. I also probably need to build up my quads... 45 is not young.

To summarise your kind advice, I think I will keep an eye out for a used/ outlet deal board that is something like an

    F2 Vantage 162, or a

    Speedster SL 163.

Or an 162-ish sl board from another alpine snowboard maker (as suggested).

I don't think I will fork out €600 plus on a board yet (I picked up the Rossi for I think €50).

If I come across a used board for €200/€300 however, now I will know what kind of board I should start with.

I know from surfing that it is easy to accumulate a quiver of boards that never get used (I have semi-gun surfboard from Indonesia and I live on the Med now 🙂 )

I appreciate the advice guys. I now have an idea of what to look out for!

Now to set alerts on classified websites.

    Muchas gracias.

  16. cheers guys.

I'll check out some sites for boards. I see a lot on eBay.de.

It'll be interesting what a newer board that is 170cm in length will feel like after the ancient 163 board I have!

I see a lot of these kind of boards with discounts:

F2 Alpin Race snowboard Speedster RS equipe ~ 179 cm

    https://www.ebay.es/itm/274355928066

Are you guys fans of F2 boards? They seem to be everywhere for sale online - a lot more than Donek and the others.

Also on the forum there have been many similar questions with pages of answers and suggestions.  You can search on various theme around new, newby, starter etc

Any decision you make should take your expectations into account.
It will be important to know what your typical terrain will be like.  If you have narrow groomers, a shorter side cut radius (SCR) may be more practical than longer.
If you intend to use your board on various parts of the mountain, using a more versatile free board will probably be more practical than a race specific board.
Many start off with a single compromise board that provide a medium SCR and softer flex allowing for general carving on various parts of the mountain.  Once you have decided what you prefer and want to spend more money on, the second hand market for boards is pretty robust and you should be able to resell well looked after boards pretty easily.

Last point: the shorter the side cut radius, the narrower the carve tends to be, all other things being equal, but you need to work harder as there are more turns in the same distance.

My 2 cents suggestion would be to look for a board of about 170 length and SCR about 12, but there are way more qualified people here to better advise you then me 🙂

This was my own thread 4 years ago which had some great advice in it:

    Thanks eBoot.

    " 170 length and SCR about 12"

That is some solid advice that I can start searching with.

I will also check out your links.

    Cheers

If you search this site you can find lots of previous discussion on the Silberpfeil and F2 in general.  It's a board that's been around a long time and has gone through changes throughout the years so I would look for more recent discussion.  IIRC it's pretty well regarded as a carving all-rounder.

Short doesn't necessarily mean easy to ride, some of those short race boards can kick your ass.

Cheers Neil. I am from Ireland but moved to Barcelona 4 years ago. Finally I have ski resorts within driving distance - but not so much surfing! On the west coast of Ireland I had surging spots within the same distance I have snow now. I will look through these pages and see what I find.

  18. Thanks for the swift response Aracan. Much obliged.

I have noticed a lot of F2 boards being sold second hand indeed.

Could you recommend a place, for someone who is an beginner/intermediate such as myself, to research which board is most suitable?

What is my style ? - I guess carving groomed pistes, which often involves avoiding others!

My fear is that I order a board that is too long, and that I cannot control it unless I am doing 100kph!

Thanks again, and sorry if my question is too generic.

    Regards.

  19. Hi everyone!

I am looking for some advice. I would consider myself a Beginner/ Intermediate snowboarder. I have been boarding for 20 years - however, that would only mean one week per season sometimes, other times a number of weekends, and some years, no snowboarding at all.

I have nearly always used soft boots and a Burton bullet board that was about 20 years old.

However, two years ago I made the jump to an alpine board and hard boots. I used to have dreams of becoming good enough to go to the snow park, learn tricks etc.

The reality was, I was becoming middle aged, not getting in enough time on the snow every year, and usually spending my time on groomed pistes.

I was finding that using the Burton bullet on the piste was a killer - I was always fighting to slow down, wobbling on flat sections and generally not enjoying it on the piste (it probably was designed for fresh snow).

The change to an alpine board was fantastic. I have much more control, can do nice carves and rarely find myself catching an edge. I also feel safer on the piste than before and the board really seems to leave me less exhausted than before.

So, finally to my questions. I picked up a second hand Rossignol "xlr" 163cm board two years ago. I have no idea if it is the right size for me, but I really enjoy it. I bought some new bindings and a pair of Deluxe Track 700 boots.

    I weigh about 86kg / 13.54 stone / 13 stone, 7.6 lbs / 194lbs. I am 5' 11 or 1,80m in height and I am 45 years old.

I will attach some photos here:

    https://justpaste.it/992nu

Now, I imagine that this board is very old and that design has improved greatly. I would consider upgrading my board if you guys think there is something out there I should try?

I live in Barcelona, and occasionally some used boards pop for sale second hand. I would like advice on what I should keep an eye out for?

Would an F2 Speedster Equipe RS or a Silberpfeil be something I should try out?

I imagine that longer boards, will involve bigger turns and higher speed to get them to work. I enjoy some speed, but control and safety are paramount to me.

Any advice would be appreciated. Hopefully my situation will be also helpful to other boarders who perhaps have my experience and are experimenting with used boards.

    Cheers!

    Charlie.
