  1. "crank down the ankle strap" and "getting noticeable heel lift" are signs that the boots are too large. What mondo size is your Dalbello?

My right foot (rear) is smaller than my left foot, thus, sometimes, having a slight heel lift. I need to crank down a little bit more and insert shim to rectify the problem. I know the size of the boots is slightly larger for my right foot. I suspect yours are much larger.

When we get funding for it 😅 We have just finished the S-Shell (smaller than A-Shell) and will be testing shortly.

WOW!! May I know what size is the S-Shell? Does it equal to A-Shell minus 1.5cm?

In addition, do you have a plan to produce a super soft tongue for extremecarving/carving people?

It is very strange because my shell A may be smaller than yours.

Just to make thing clearer. Shell A can be distinguished by its outlook. Its heel piece plastic does protrude from the boots shell (refer to the right one in the photo). Unlike Shell B,C,D which have heel piece under the boots.

  4. I have wide 2E feet as well. I can never wear standard Adidas/Nike/Air Jordan shoes without up-one-size. I like New Balance 2E or Asics 4E. My feet also touch (or squeeze) the sides of most of my shells (incl MS951) without liners. I have several hard boots, G-style, Head Stratos, Raichle AF600(same as T700), all in 24.5cm shell. I guess I can wear a 23.5 shell if there is one. Since my right foot is smaller due to an injury, If MS offers a shell smaller than Shell-A, I would definitely try and buy one.

"Up-size" is usually only applicable to people who are fat, who has strong feet/large calf etc.

MS951 is quite wide with small volume. When I first tried the boots and stock liner, my feet were screaming! Then, I know that is my boots.

Wearing a larger shell is always comfortable and happy in the beginning. Problems only occur later on. Just my 2cents.

26.5 sounds like good fit for you (widthwise)

I assume you didn't heat mold liners yet; so first remove liner from boot and check if you have enough room for your feet inside plastic shell; also there are some set of insoles that come (or used to) with 26.5, if you remove extra one boot will feel wider

heatmold liners first, then try boots on a slope and only then make a decision if you need to pinch plastic

    PS

also my feet are 26.7 and I'm in Shell A... no plastic pinched... just heatmolded liners + custom insoles

no way your actual feet are 26.7 in a Shell A without punch.

I have Shell A and I measure the inner shell length very carefully. It is 262mm. My feet are 251.4/254.4, thus having approx 10mm space when shell fitting.

    ShortcutToMoncton:

your 25.75 feet should be able to fit Shell A with a pair of Zipfit Gara liner. Because Zipfit is very thin in the forefoot.

  6. I have similar issue on the rear foot, huge pain at the back of my ankle after 3-4 days of riding. (I never have lunch or rest, and ride 7hr per day straight.)

Usually, I can tolerate it until the 7th day. The pain continues for 1 week after the ski trip.

I was using MS shell A with zipfit. The problem is still unresolved.

Yeah,  I'm 243mm.  Dan from UPZ emailed me back and suggested if I'm happy with 25s now,  to stick with a 25, but also to be cautious about older RC10 boots given they've been out of production for a number of years already...

243mm is about 10mm shorter than mine. I suggest MS951 shell A which is smaller than UPZ 279. Otherwise backland is another option, but you need to modify it.

I always prefer smallest shell, performance + comfort.

  8. I see what he means now (I cant read his attached picture).

What bigwavedave suggested to increase flex of Zipfit is great, I will definitely try when there is a chance to ski again.

I find that I have another brand new spare Zipfit Grand-prix (or World-cup). I havent tried it on snow but carpet only. It is a bit firmer and tighter than my moderately-used Diva/Tour. However, the feeling could be different on snow.

    Re: slapos,

Removing the spoiler feels better at that time. Otherwise I have to use the furthest buckle slot and have a hard time buckling them. I have normal calves.

In addition, the lean of the front foot can be more straight. I just felt better when I removed it. The original lean is a bit too much for extremecarving imo.

I dont quite get what you describe. There is only one black stuff, which is official named "spoiler" (a piece of plastic screwed to the boot cuff). And there is no plastic under the black stuff.

What you need to do is to unscrew it. remember to keep the black stuff and other little stuff in place in case you want it back afterwards.

This is what it looks like after the remove of the black stuff. Hope it helps.

  10. Re: pow4ever,

    • A bit shorter length of zipfit is not a problem because the toe part of the liner is elastic. Also, I think zipfit 255 have be a little too large for Shell A. For people with BMI under ~25, I suggest down one size for boots and liner. But I cant tell which size to choose for heavier people.
    • I only have tried Tour/Diva (same model actually) which are very good! I cant comment on other models. My skier friend has Gara which I think is too stiff for my taste for alpine snowboard. (I am just 135lbs best shape, 155 worst shape) I have previously requested Zipfit to offer liner with more flex and there will be a new model "GFT".
    • MS shell is in 15mm interval/increment.

    Re: Jack M,

    • When I first tried my shell A with MS stock liner, it was hell difficult to close the boots. It was hardly closed with the help of the the store staff, using widest slots. Imagine my feet expanded the shells. I just bought it trusting my shell- fit (hardly one finger) and having a good discount offered by the store (I guess they though there was not much people can fit into that shell)
    • I think your shell-fit (space behind heel and above instep) can tell whether the shell is ok for you.

These aren’t going to work for me. I believe I have a very low volume situation and there is simply nowhere for the material to go. The liner bunches when I flex forward and I really feel it in the boot. I would need liners with a “bellows” section of thin material on the sides where this is happening:

    not flexed:

    flexed:

    CB523CE3-EFA9-4F58-9805-4D34287B71E2.jpeg

Otherwise the quality of construction is off the charts.  The inside is nice leather.  The viscous cork molding material really seems to work well.  The forefoot is stretchy neoprene with a shearling wool lining.  I can see why people rave about them, when they are a good match for the foot and shell and the room between them.

I guess the problem comes from the leather interior. Leather is not elastic but neoprene is. I have several pairs of Zipfit liners (all neoprene) and I remember none of them bunches/deforms like yours.

Your Gara 275 should be a good fit with your 951 shell C. Don't go for 285 liner, as larger liners take up even more volume of the boots.

Your shell fit is just 1-2mm less than mine. I think I can still wear the boots if it is 1-2mm shorter. Therefore, I think if you take out some zipfit "omfit" cork-like material from your Gara 275 (using plastic tubes), there is a high possibility that it just fits.

Mind you that, you have to use "alpine racing" method to wear your liners and boots. (youtube below)

In addition, you can remove the spoiler ("the black plastic") at the rear cuff of the boots to increase the volumes.

I use Shell A with zipfit 245. Feet average lengths are 251.4 & 252.9. (maximum measurement is about 254.4)

  12. Yes, I use it without spring (61kg) BUT I have the nut to limit the max flex which is always smaller than the flex of my ankle.

You can use softer spring to allow more flex. I suggest SAME length of spring but softer (i.e. smaller diameter of coil).

I remember the spring of 951 is 35mm, Any longer is no need IMO. The softest spring has about 50% compression which is 17.5mm, which is fairly enough for 15-25 degree flex (I had the exact data, CAD format,  somewhere in one of my pc but unable to find it now). pokkis is right, DGSS or similar spring has not been engineering designed and may hurt your ankle. I suggest

    1. take away the spring and try only the flex of the tongue
    2. try to flex the boot with only the spring
    3. try to flex the boot only with liner (without spring and tongue)

Then you will realize what kind of spring you need and in my case I realize the tongue is the critical part of limiting the boot flex ---- > spring no longer need.

    What is your weight?

A good friend who is very aggressive and very good girl rider got slammed from behind when she and her big boy friend were straight lining at 40/45 mph. She broke the transverse processes off of 4 lumbar vertebrae and she’s pretty sore and out for the season but not seriously injured thank her lucky stares.

Does it mean the one who slammed her is much faster than 40/45 mph?

  14. Impressive! That's a lot of work. I once wanted to start doing something like this. but there is too much friction whatever.

I end up finding Atomic Backland is the easier boots for modification and have completed one mod. The pivot has some sort of bearing for smoother cuff rotation. It saves a lot of weight as well.
