  1. In 1976 my dad bought a 1972(73?) hatchback Chevy Vega from my Uncle.

    Powder blue, automatic, a/c, aluminum engine block. Positively the worst vehicle I have ever driven. Within days the engine had to be replaced. Had to turn off the a/c to pull away from a stop. Visibility was poor in any direction. I could go on but you get the idea.

    When we finally got dad to retire that pos, he bought a HUGE Chrysler Newport from the same Uncle. It lasted six months before my brother and I had to replace rod bearings in #8.

    Of course, you could put down the back seat of the Vega and prop the hatch up with the jack, gas was $0.75 a gallon and AIDS wasn't on anyone's radar...

  2. Where I live in Pennsylvania, the power goes out several times a year. The longest so far was three days during a Christmas ice storm a few years ago. Not fun.

    I have a portable, 5500 watt generac generator (load, but cheap) and a generator transfer switch wired into the main panel. Currently, I am configured to run the fridge, well pump (very important), oil heater, one light in the main bathroom (also very important), and several other convenience outlets. So far so good. At least I can get a shower before I go to work.

    The purpose of the transfer switch is to connect the desired house circuits to the generator without feeding the power back into the local utility grid. Basically, you just power the circuits you need not the entire house. Connecting a generator to your home's electrical system by plugging it into an existing outlet (without flipping the main breaker off) feeds power back into the grid. That means the lineman 25 feet up a pole, trying to fix your power supply problem, could find a live wire where he doesn't expect one.

    I know it sounds like a hassle, but if you're going to do this its worth doing right. Get a permit and get it inspected.

  3. Here's my machine. Its a little older than most, but it still runs wonderfully. Thought I'd better post a photo before I put it up for sale. (House, kids, wife, work, etc. You get the idea).

  4. A quick question for those of you familiar with boarding in Europe. I am going to Belgium, on business, the second week of May. If I extend my stay a few days, is there anywhere to ride within a few hours of Brussels? Will they still have snow in the beginning of May? How do I get there? Etc., etc...

    Thanks for any info.

  5. I second the previous comment regarding price and board size. I am 135 lbs and ride a Burton UP 162 with TD1 bindings. For my light weight it is a terrfic board.

    I rode with Mark Jeangerard (the second poster) for a good part of Thursday at SES and I think he'll attest to the my UP's ability to hold a nice carve.

  7. I rode a Burton Alp 156 with Burton step-ins for 4 or so years.

    Also, during the same period I rode an Alp 169 with Burton race plates. I am 130 lbs, ride aggressively and am not particularly careful with my equipment and never had a problem.

    I now ride an Ultra Prime 163 with an old set of TD1s and am very happy with the overall performance.

    Last year I replaced my 9 (or so) year old Raichle 123s with a pair of Raichle 423s. Thanks Bomberonline.com!

    Will probably be upgrading to TD2s before next year.
