  1. Super fun day yesterday! Newb Sparky, Ice, Sandy, Coach, Skier Jeff, Shelly, Tree Run Hillary, Katie and I rounded out the crew. Bennet's was on point. Smiles for miles. Soft turns to be had everywhere! The ladies were all charging for freshies as the rest of us tried to keep up. Just a great day to be on the hill. Id like to thank the guys that wrecked on 70 just above Silver Plume for keep the crowds down! See you in May?!!!

I think this is related to "saccadic masking".

I sometimes look twice on my toe-side, I just don't trust myself to catch everything.

AND I STILL GET CLOSE CALLS. I am terrified during touron dense periods, like spring break, USASA nationals, etc....

I know some people here trust their vision of catching everything on each turn, and will continue the run with someone behind them. I will almost never do that.

My take is, if you spend enough time on snow, you are almost guaranteed a collision. I will do as much as I can do prevent it. But statistically, I'm in for another collision. I got whiffed the other day at Loveland from a guy that saw my run. We looked at each other, I started carving, he was watching, watching.... turn turn turn... freeride-world-tour brah straightline pass. I didn't even see him coming despite checking every turn.

Have a trip planned for next weekend to June Mountain! Anyone around? @slopestarhow is the mountain today?

Well Gunsmoke on Saturdays is a carver's paradise. Or hell depending on how you look at it. Team Horizon (started by a couple of Mammoth Soft boot carvers Knee KOKO and Rayndier (instagram) They are practicing all day every Saturday as a liftie told me, Korean/Japanese carving. Rayn is a Donek Ambassador. I loved it. All super nice and I think I am an Honorary Member after this past Saturday

fyi guy, not everyone likes ketchup. In fact some people find ketchup to be disgusting. Next time you’re done eating your fries, please do not leave the extra 4 tubs of unused ketchup next to the GUY whom ketchup makes him vomit !! 🤮 thanks guy !!

+1 point for letting use his Loveland pass for a discount.
    -99 for slopestar

There was Cholula hot sauce there as well. Next time i will make sure it is warm mayo in a dirty ashtray. Condiments make the meal. Glad you had a great time!

everyone get their own trail 🙂
ppl often wonder why i can ride the same trail over and over and not get bore.  being sucky at this sport have it's advantage as i create excitement by tripping over myself lol...

My company does all of their Audio Visual .

  10. Anyone have thoughts on how to educate the public/ raise awareness? Resorts spend tons of money building terrain parks with all kinds of rules and signage along with park staff to support and maintain. Some resorts are dedicated to skiing only. Why not dedicate a no passing run like our friends at Turner (during Montucky event) or perhaps a straightliner only space. I mean these are extreme examples but food for thought. Thanks all for your input. I too nearly got creamed by someone this past Sunday from behind of course

It’s a lot of things. When I ride regardless of whether I am trying something new to improve or simply making turns I am processing multiple variables: forward surface conditions, proximity to fix and movable objects, projected turn radius, pitch variation, speed, center of mass position over the edge, etc., etc., etc. Those things are being processed either consciously or subconsciously but they are happening with the feeling of the carve as feedback.

Being hit from behind is because the culprits are either incapable of those thoughts or simply don’t care because they own the pitch.

How many times have you stopped a run to wait for traffic VS. how many times have you seen others do the same for you?

    NPC (Non Player Character)

"NPC" stands for "Non-Player Character" and is used as a metaphor to describe someone who is perceived as lacking independent thought or blindly following trends.

Maybe we are looking at it the wrong way.  For years I've been wearing bright colored jackets, so people can see and avoid me.  This doesn't seem to work.  Maybe it's "target fixation theory", if you look at an object you will hit it. When riding trees, or mountain biking,  look for the space, don't look at the trees.

Maybe people are so in awe of us that that they fixate on our awesome skills, and hit us.  Maybe wearing white, top to bottom, and blending in is the answer.  I have less close calls when it's snowing so hard I can barely see.

Certainly people pass at the wrong time. They try to pass without making a sound. And instead of passing close after the apex, they shoot across as we reach the apex of the opposite turn.  As we sling shot back to the point they thought we wouldn’t be. Gapers will gape…

  13. I'm thinking we should all just start straight lining. This carving thing is not healthy for longevity in snowboarding for carvers. Between Sean and David getting smoked from behind in Europe and recent near hits here daily in CO, is it really worth it for the turn? Interested in your thoughts. I think painting a big bullseye on our backs is the only thing left to do. Interested in thoughts, educating the public/patrol? I think it's time that the General Public, those without passes watch a safety video before entering the slopes like if you were going to drive a go kart.

I'm being a bit sarcastic/comedic here as we have all had close calls but seeing videos of good riders getting clobbered or nearly getting clobbered is getting really old. How do we stop it, spread awareness...? I don't know the answer but I'm about to clock myself on Strava doing 70mph in a beginner zone just for kicks and to raise awareness...

    2/25/24

Katie and I, Mario, Sandy, NSFNG, Kahn +1 followed by This Guy I know... Looked amazing but a late Saturday thaw followed by a nighttime freeze made it look way better than it was. Chunky and rutted. Fire bowl had most of us barely hanging on after the first run of the day. We disbanded almost immediately with folks heading up 4 after 1 on Ptarmigan. Katie and i headed over to 1 for a minute then checked out a short bus. It was good and This guy i Know joined the fun for a few good laps before consecutive days took its toll and we checked out.

also, I almost got smoked by ski racer kid and his dad running up my ass

These videos are I think doing more for carving than I've seen for decades. You're getting penetration in places I'd previously have had to keep my ability to ride (as opposed to spin) a secret. The fashion's been turning for a while, but even so, I think you hit this one in the right way at the right time.

I think the "instruction" thing may be apposite too. A lot of kids rushed out to buy Koura boards, but I rarely see those ridden well. I think that's because people assumed it was a gear thing, where as actually... it's a rider skill thing.

I agree but the No chance duck stance people are in an uproar

  17. The time of the season where everyone is out. We have all seen many recent collisions with carvers. And the misconceptions people have about all of us making radius turns and how to avoid the downhill “skier” and we are using the whole mountain. Glad you were not clipped. Racers need to hear it the most. There is no hope for the general public. I feel like everyone has become a NPC game character and are absolutely clueless. Sunday funday!

Molding or re-molding your moldable liners with the PR's is the ticket.  I also had pressure points before molding.  If you don't have moldable liners, get some.

With ride insano/they have been great but exacerbated the problem with the liner and boot tongue seams making hot spots around the soft fleshy bits of my ankle. Popped them back into my old flow talons with remind insoles and so much better. Blue/large. They are great. Rather with than without. Will have to try molding again with them in on my old boots. Done with the insano pain from the rides.
