  1. So what I'm trying to say here is that you can go really fast even with a body drag... and trust me, getting wet is not an issue..... the issue rather is what reinforcements to put on your clothes not to lose them after 3 turns....

And actually eating snow is a lot of fun.

Having said all this, no doubt, EC has nothing to do with proper race technique and is (just like many other things in life) a question of personal preference. EC is also a nice and safe style to go down very steep slopes, provided they are well groomed.

And in fact, Pokkis is a great rider (especially in his age group  - sorry Pokkis I could not miss this), I've seen him many times.... But don't ask me how this topic got here from Matiu's video... (JakeW )

    Rgds

Exactly Istvan,it is a matter of personal preference, and what i said was that my preference is the EC technique and even more caspers switch EC way(witch i can't do and think that very few can!)!

What was so wrong that i said?,i didn't know that the guys where Olympic athletes but either way i just said that fast hand flopping race style riding doesn't do it for me any more,i could'nt even watch the olympics mens finals and i fell asleep!

I rode like that(style i mean,i never was an Olympic athlete!) for 14 years but after finding the EC way 3 years ago that was it for me!

It is a personal opinion and i think that for many people the EC style is alot more eye catching and fun!

  2. you know valsam, the big different between you and I.

I have fun riding, you have fun watching the others...............cheers

Now why are you being mean?

    I just said my opinion!

And yes you might have fun riding but if you understood correctly my previous post then you should know that i didn't have fun watching the others riding(your video) and found it pretty boring!

That's just my opinion, fast race style riding isn't as good to watch as super low body draging EC style riding!

  3. I have torn my ACL on my left knee 2 times ,first time back in 1988 they just streched and bolted down the same ACL and it broke again after 9 months and the second time they tried the new way "plastic surgery" they called it and it still holds up until today but with allot of pain (my left knee was'nt the same again!),after that i also torn both my PCL'S (all from basketball)!

I couldnt ski after even the first surgery because skiing is very stresfull to the knees thats the reason i tryed and stuck with snowboarding!

  4. After riding for 13 years in burton reactors and winds last year i picked up a pair of shadows (bought them very cheap!)and thought that they could not compare in any way to the stiffer winds and reactors but to my surprise the shadows suited me better then my previous boots with there flexier feel and lateral flex!

  5. +1 The style is what brings people into the sport and guys like Caspercarver are the best advertisement carving could have.

But how dare you say this, this is blaspheme!

Caspercarver doesn't ride a super(long, stiff, and very expensive!) metal board with a apex plate system ,there is no way that that style looks cooler and is more fun without the gear i mentioned above which is very much needed (and much praised!)for most of the 50+ age super gs racers in here!icon7.gificon7.gificon7.gif

  6. I don't see riding like in that video converting many jibbers.

    maybe old school skiers though.

the guy is a really good rider, I'd like to see what he'd be able to do on modern gear at higher speeds.

to the eye of a jibber what he is doing is A extreme version of the turns lots of park rats do on the way to the park. most of the stuff I've seen park kids get excited about are seeing big powerful turns at high speeds. EC helps for catching their eyes but is by no means required. most of the park set realize their boards don't turn well above moderate speeds and it's why when they see people killing it at GS type speeds they take notice.

I was riding with a couple hardbooter two of which are really good riders, few softbooters commented watching us(or, probably the two there that were really good riders!) was sick and the like.

I tried bringing into snowboarding 4 friends of mine in the past from skiing and all 4 times i gave them my alpine gear to try ,all 4 cursed at me and gave up after 1-2 hours of trying but when they tried softboots they did it easier ,i even tried it with 2 already softbooters and both gave up because they found it very hard mostly because of the binding angles and the restriction of the boots, even i back in 1995 when i wanted to make the transition from skiing to snowboarding when i visited Austria and alpine snowboarding was big back then rented an alpine set and found it very hard especially getting up after falling(i lasted 3 hours of beating and went and bought skis there!)but went i came back home and visited a local mountain i tried softboots and boy was that easy compared to hardboots,i went down the hole mountain without even falling once!

So besides that alpine snowboarding isn't advertised allot and gear not found easily and way too expensive i think that also the difficulty is a major factor for not attracting many people!

  7. I think poppy, lower SCR semi bi-directional boards could become a trend for hardboot riders. If you watch the playful styles of PureBoarding or CasperCarver it seems like wild fun to everybody. I think it closes the gap between hardboot equipment and freestyle mindset. Let's make fun in the first place

If more guys like kasperkarver :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsAtK47c8PM

ride at the mountains then alot of heads will turn and people will get very interested in hardbooting!

Damn it that the season is over here, i would sure like to try extremecarving switch with my shorty!

(Is that board an asym?it sure looks like one to me and also a very short one!)

  8. Huh?????

We have about 20 or so part time carvers here and only one or two ride EC style. The rest are all carvers for the most part leaving varying degree of trench. They still catch a lot of attention.

Skiers here seem to be more tuned in to and turned on by a clean fast race carve. All angulated, fast, and minimal contact ( but very close to ) the snow garners the most attention when I am riding.

You said some weird things about racers before. Not sure where you get that, but not the case universally. Every top level racer that I have ridden with could carve circles around your average carver if they wanted to.

Exactly what sounded weird to you ?

Extreme carving leaves trench there is no skidding, just carving and is much more head turning cause it may lack a little bit in speed than race technique style riding but it does the trench digging with the body much closer (exactly ON!)to the snow as possible!

Let me give you an example ,if you have ever riden a motorcycle its like someone taking a fast leaning turn and someone else that takes the same turn a little bit slower but much lower at the point he is scraping his knee and exhaust pipe with sparkles blasting away ,now tell me witch of the bikers do you think gets the most spectators going "WOW!"?

  9. The sport wont grow with these outrageous prices they have for alpine gear!

Why the hell is alpine gear so expensive?

I was thinking of changing to softboots just because buying new alpine gear would have cost me 3 times the money!

A couple of years ago my board broke boots cracked and heal bail also all in the same season and for a g-force blade s i needed over 1000$(here in Greece!?!?!?) over 500$ for boots and another 300$ for bindings that makes us 1800$ and for a good freeride all mountain set (very good discounts because of the quantity of offerings!)i would have spent 600-700!

Luckily i discovered e-bay that saved me!

  10. I can definitely say that the alpine race riding technique for recreational riding is going to vanish (it just doesn't look good anymore to me and allot of people i know)and the extremecarving full laid down body dragging technique is going to be the way to ride in the future,it might even cause a big boom of bringing allot of people to hardboots !

Also i think that PGS and all forms of alpine racing is going to lose even more popularity because it is not attracting anymore,i could barely watch the Olympic finals,i found them very boring especially compared to the other snowboard events , the ski events and even bobsledding!

  11. I have a core shot exactly like the one in the above video i have tried all kinds of ptex material and the ptex keeps on cracking after a couple of rides so i keep on patching it up. I melt the ptex with a torch and fill in the gauge in layers but can't get it to drip in the blue flame because the flam is too close and it burns out so i drip it from higher up!

So why is my ptex patch so cracky and why is it that i can scrape it of even with my fingernails(as i mentioned i have tried all sorts of ptex even graphite ones and all crack and scratch of very easily)?

Is it because i dont burn it right and it looses it's structure?

Should i try welding it like the video above?

  12. valsam has fun doing his gig man. smaller sandbox maybe. no offense.

I supported you wanting to drag it sometimes but don't think that worn out clothes are a substitute for good race technique.

Theo - I can't say that I have ridden with a plate but I put a lot of torque and twist into my boards all the time. Can't really imagine not being able to. I would try if a plate was available. Pedaling is a great way to get a lot earlier turn that what you should be able to from a long board.

I know you gyus have seen these vids but i have to ask this to all of you,

Which technique do you guys think looks better ?

    THIS ONE >

    OR THIS ONE> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DhFQoC2kPw

For me race technique riding doesn't look good any more!

Rode like that(not like those champs,i mean that technique!)for years and going mach with flying arms all over trying to turn as fast as possible kicking and slipping isn't for me anymore!

Yes the technique of riding to wear out those clothes is a substitute for a good race technique!

And definitely has a much more "WOW" factor!

After 7 years of skiing i got board and turned to hardbooting then after another 11 years of alpine snowboarding got board of that to so when i stumbled on these swoard videos 3 years ago a new world opened up for me!

  13. That's why i turned to smaller radius and softer boards so i do not need to take up the hole mountain at insane speeds to do some really laid down turns!

It is never too late you guys but "smaller is better"!

Saturday there where about five teenagers (they where wearing Greek national team suits)with there kessler's ( black and silver ones over 1,80 height boards) and could not even touch the snow one hand down because i could see that those boards could not bend enough (at least for there weight)to come to an arc fitted for the width of the run,and one came up to me (with my cheap glass oxygen 1.69) to ask me how the hell do i get so low and i told him that you have to spend 100euros (e-bay)for a board for extreme carving and not 1000 for a board that is built for racing!

After that i guess i wanted to show off a little bit and showed him my gloves that i poured glue on top of them for the dragging and my jacket that has worn out in the front and my new pants (black)that are grey only on the right but cheek from ass dragging(goofy),But i forgot to tell him that i have been riding for 21 years(before he was even born)!

  14. My 1,71 use to have great edge hold but after i gave it for service it cant hold edge any more,is it possible that he changed the side edge bevel ?

Does anyone know if the board came with a 2º side edge bevel and could this have changed by sharpening and would it affect the edge hold?

  15. Just tried mine out today and it was like i was riding a different board, yes it increased the stiffness allot and after the first run i got used to the different feeling but it gave me a big dilemma because today i rode 2 clicks faster than i normally ride the last 2 seasons (45year bad knees from basketball and skiing-snowboarding!)and i don't know if i want to ride mach speed carving again (something like junkies that get into drugs again after rehab!)

The only problem was that i had to tighten the screws 2 times.should i put something like vibra-tite on them?

I'm even thinking of making carbon or some kind of metal risers now! (if anyone could recommend what type of metal or aluminium would do ?)

  16. The whole huge boards thing is I think predominantly a North American issue, a bit like 2.10m skis were back in the day. It's kind of odd to me as although I do have a GS board, there's almost nowhere in North America I can ride the sucker as they have speed cops all over the place and it doesn't start to hum until Mach 2.

I think that everything depends on the slopes you ride at!

I saw a couple of guys here in Greece riding big boards over 1,78 and i think it was after they came to S.E.S but i think that for here those boards are not practical(anything over 1,71 is big for Greek slopes because there is no width and steepness!)i had a 1,85 and a 1,78 and I'm pretty big (250pounds 6,4)and with the big board there was just not enough mountain for me and after 20 seconds and a couple of turns another 20 minutes on the chair lift again but i find much more fun riding a similar board to the one Puddy Tat referred to a oxygen F67 (last year new one) yes i know it's soft and small , but with the smaller sidecut and the slope i ride mostly (it's in Bulgaria and says that the inclination is 73%!) at medium to slow speeds i carve hands down and the steepness of the hill doesn't let me loose speed even when i press hard !

And even if something goes wrong and those speeds the damage is less!

  17. I just made 3 pairs out of Polycarbonate for my boards and none of them are metal , in the past i have broken all my other boards (at least 4)at the point where the toe side front binding makes contact with the board when the board bends,i hope that they will give me extra board protection and a little stiffness too because except for my carbon board the other 2 are a little bit soft!

Tomorrow i will try them out for the first time!

  18. Yeah i know what you mean, somewhat like my avatar picture but my outside hand tends to stay a little bit raised and that's also why i drop it down and do the "dive move" on steeper slopes (also had chest hitting down a couple of times!)and from what my friends tell me both hands down looks much better and the "wow how did you do that without falling question"except for the snow all over my face !

  19. Jasey-Jay Anderson does not have that problem...

If Jessey-Jay touched the snow in this picture he would definitely get snow all over his face too!

I know that i could avoid touching the snow both hands down (that's how i rode hardboots for 12 years!)but after i saw the videos from the swoard guys ,lower and with body and both arms sliding on the snow is what i want !

Buell the snow that day was just an inch of fresh underneath was it hard stiff!
