  1. 2 takes of Carved made it to the official RED ONE demo at IBC, Amsterdam. Parts of only 22 other projects were cut together, from the best shots submitted by the best of the best. While there was no time to get that done for NAB in April this year, and Carved was shown around at the show-floors on HDTV, this time the film and tv pro's got all the 2K love they could get. This is quite a deal for me, so pardon my not-so subtle pride. http://www.ibc.org/cgi-bin/displaypage.cgi?pageref=4762
  2. Those, who are not on HD yet, and still want to watch Carved on a regular TV, can now download a PAL DVD image and some DVD box artwork. If you do not mind to go through the effort of burning and printing, I will be very honored, if Carved finds its place on your DVD shelf, among other snowboard movies. @williwhit I have not met Steve, but from the links, he is as crazy as the guys we are doing the video right now. I would not mind to do something with him. Well... first I have to survive this German Rockers....
  3. Thank you for the compliments and your support, guys. I know, the season is still away... I pity you...;) @PolyMathMan The framerate was 75fps and in the EC sequences 120fps. You are not the only one seeking out for some realtime speed footage. I am in the middle of pre-production of a super-crazy music video, where we have 20km of a highway and 50 bikers at our disposal. Without promising anything, I might do a quick-and-dirty edit with some extra EC sequences in realtime, when I am in the post with this video. Its not gonna be as aesthetic as Carved, more a dirty sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll sort of thing, but it might give you what you seek.
  4. Dear Eric, I fully understand your point. Paying for content branded products would not be the best way to present oneself neither for the creators, nor for the brands. But this is not the case here. Carved is a privately funded short-film about snowboarding showing among freeride and speedgliding, highspeed images of a snowboarding style called extremecarving. It does this for the first time in a very high, cinematic quality. The point of extremecarving is that the rider makes a full-laid turn in the front and backsite, where the whole body of the rider touches the snow. This style has gathered interest of a growing community of enthusiasts, a couple of snowboard companies are developing snowboards for this specific style. The community exchanges tips and tricks on how to learn this styles, and there are workshops and seminars held all over the world, in order to exchange the knowledge, promote this style, this sport, and of course the products that are connected to it. Of course, for Carved, I had partnered with one of the snowboard companies, but I also had to find many other partners, that are not connected to snowboarding, but in the film production and postproduction. I had to do that in order to push the costs for this project from an upper five-digit number down to a low five digit number. Neither of the partners had the financial power or interest to buy into the project completely, and therefore use it exclusively for their promotion. If I would have found such a partner, e.g. Red Bull, who has this very power and interest, Carved would have been offered for free for sure. Extremecarving is a niche. As a niche, it does not gather as much interest from investors, as mainstream with its high profits would. Mainly because, it is for enthusiasts and fanatics. It is quite difficult to learn and takes years to master. It totally fascinated me, and I felt, that it would deserve to be made into a visually more interesting work, than what is out there on youtube already. This is how Carved was born. Unfortunately, it had cost me much more, than I anticipated. But once you start a project like this, you have to bite the dust and finish it. There is no way back. I asked the community, if it would support me, and quite a lot of people had. It also seems, that the feedback is overall quite good and that people like how Carved turned out to be. I am incredible thankful to them and for their support, because it gives me back a lot of the energy, that I have put into this project. I got some tough lessons during the production from the mountains. :) It is motivating and a great feeling, that it seemes, that I got it right in the end. Of course, it would have been better, to offer Carved for free. It would promote this sport much more effectively. I would have loved to have a big sponsor on board, and not have to worry about that all, rather just deploy it out on all the videosites and torrents. But I was not able to get one, and I would probably still be trying to achieve that in this moment, and Carved would not exist. But I wanted it to exist. And believe me, when I tell you, that I did pay for that attitude. :D Beeing it an indie-project, there is a sad reality I have to deal with and I cannot give it away for free. I do not want to discuss, if 20USD for a 8 minutes FullHD film is too much or not. It is. The willing to pay for it, depends on how much you are already a fan of this sport or not, how much you would want more films about this sport to be done, and how much you think, that projects like this should be repeated or not. It is your choice, but you should not have the wrong impression about what Carved is, and where it came from. Carved is not a film, that try to get a wide array of "consumers" to this sport, it cannot be, because extremecarving will never be a mass-sport. It therefore will never be promoted in the way, the typical mass-consumer is used to be charmed by brands. Again, it simply lacks the power to do so, and I think that will stay that way the next few years. Also, this is not about someone trying to get rich from the extremecarving community. Neither is it a poor attempt to sell branded content. It may fight a little its initial purpose, for not being for free, but this is the best way for me to get it out to the right audience. It may stay a little, boutique project because of that. One, that will stay in hands of a small group of sport and technology enthusiasts, who are ok with the background of this project and are willing to pay for what must seem be overpriced. You know, I am alright with that. More, I am very honored, that such a group exists, and their comments and their support make my dark days bright. If you want to educate yourself about extremecarving, there are wonderfull videos on youtube. Carved will never be able to compete with those in price, but surely with quality. I hope I could give you another perspective on the issue, and I also would like to thank you for your respectful critisism.

  7. @GavinB Check your mail that is linked for this forum. You get some special treatment. Use it well. :-D @RCrobar Thanks for the compliments. Yeah, what comes after that 5 minutes 8 seconds mark... that always makes my day too. :) We gave it a name, with the editor Raphael Nomine: The Reichenbach-Shot. To honor Daniel Reichenbach, the Dop of this project, who did this crazyness himself. At the age of 50! Drop him a line, if you feel so. He is totally cool and I learned a lot from him. Next project? Well, I am recovering still from this one, to be honest. Took some pretty hits at all aspect, life has to offer. The birth of a movie is never easy, even such a little one. Suffering is a good word to describe that. Have a look at the Production Diary on the Carved Webpage. The postproduction was not much easier. :) For the future? Well, a lot of depends on you guys. The EC community is not a multimillion market, but a niche. Growing, but a niche. And it will stay one. Your reaction and support seem to prove, though, that it is an honor to create something for this community, and that you can give back. And I think I want a lot for a 7 minutes flick. So write, blog, digg and spread the word about Carved. Next winter is not that far away, actually. Let's see how this works, and most of all, how the distribution model of Carved will work out. Remember, my ass is blank out there, no DRM and other $hit. It is a risky move, and I have been warned not to do it. This is important, because all the enthusiasm aside, the bottom line of each project has to be black. Thats the same thing for ski-areas, snowboard builders, ..., as for filmmakers. If I can show an investor some numbers, he might actually give me the $$$ $$$ that I would need for a feature-length movie. Not that I would not have ideas what to do... Its a great feeling reading your comments here. Considering, that on the end of day 3 out of 3 shooting days, I still did not had what I came from. The now famous Reichenbach-shot was done in 3 hours in the morning of day 4 (with half of the crew already left). With 2 film cameras with beta firmware, that is quite a feat. Jonas
  8. @GavinB Yeah, the 1080p version is really for a 3GHz computer. I was not kidding in the Guidelines. Thanks for trying though! I think I would do that myself. Seeing is believing. If you guys are a members of Digg.com, and would not mind to digg me at the Carved Front page, that would be awesome.
  9. Hello guys and gals! Carved is available for download, if you donate. Hope that will get you through the summer! :-D. Jonas
  10. 12.06.2008: First screening of Carved in Geneva at Fonction Cinema in 2k to a professional audience, as part of a seminar about high definition and digital cinema.
  11. @bobdea The specs call it BD-5 or BD-9. Bluray file structure on a standard DVD, slightly lower bitrate and less capacity. The format does not work very well in reality though, hence the test. You would need a really beefy PC, with at least 3.8 Ghz, to be able to decode h264 material in realtime in 1080p resolution. I think for those, who use their mac/pc as an entertainment center, 720p is a good compromise. @carvediem It is very difficult for me to determine if and how to distribute Carved, as I really cannot say, how much people will be willing to pay for a 7 minutes short, even with 25 minutes making of. 10EUR? 15EUR? 25EUR? The point is, that for a volume above 500 I have to go for a glasmaster, in order to be able to press the DVD or Bluray. And this is, where it starts to get ugly. So if I do a batch of let's say, 2000, I would have to charge about 30EUR plus shipping in order to get even. That does not include authoring and encoding and the editing work for the making of. Now I seriously do not think that I would sell 2000 at that pricepoint, even to those die-hard fans. I mean, how many extreme carvers are out there in total? Further, when i put it on Amazon, there is no way, that I could get the production costs back, if I do not want to sell it for 35USD. Their commission is that big. And yes, what happens, if it leaks? I do not doubt that this will happen. And will you really buy a 7 minutes movie for 25 EUR, after you have seen it in 720p via torrent? I would not put a copy protection onto the DVD/Bluray discs, as this raises the costs even more, rather put the price advantage to the buyer. But there will always be someone, who will think its cool to distribute it the "other ways". I could put it online for individual downloads. You could download the cover, the DVD/Bluray image, and then put together the box yourself. This would cost less, and could work via paypal donations. On the other hand, is this really the way I want to present Carved? I may go down the road of individual encodings. If you purchase, you get a reservation number, your name on the DVD/Bluray cover and into the menu. This would make it a sort of a collector's item. :-D A watermark in the footage would fight a little the temptation of leaking it. It would cost more, would be in low volume, but might be interesting for those, who would want something really special. I don't know. What shall I do? If there is demand, I will react on it. Let me know, what you guys think. Jonas P.S. Nice and clean blog Carvediem! Please add the string "&fmt=18" at the end of your link. This will embed the high quality version. 12. Hello, we just finished the shooting of the shortfilm Carved about extreme carving with Patrice Fivat and Jacques Rilliet. We shot on the new RED ONE cameras, often at 120 fps high speed. We had snowstorms, avalanches all over the place. All that at 2500m altitude. That was one hell of a ride, I can tell you.
