  2. Where are you getting this metric? It seems highly dubious. By "own a PC" do you mean "They have a current PC that they use on a regular basis" or "They never actually threw out/sold their old windows machine so they technically still have a PC, although they never use it anymore"?

Very very few mac users I know (and I know a lot) have a Windows machine. Most of them got a mac when their windows machine kicked the bucket, and they replaced it with a mac. Some of them use paralells/vmware/bootcamp to run windows in a VM for old apps that are not available for OSX, but those are by far the minority (although I do know a lot of software devs who have switched to OSX and most of those guys have a few VM's for software development purposes, I have a few). That said, software devs are hardly an example of your average user.

The proof is in the pudding: too little, too late:

    Opps....my bad, it's 85%.

    http://www.npd.com/press/releases/press_091005.html

Some of them use paralells/vmware/bootcamp: Exactly..when they actually need to work! What's the problem with this? Twofold. You're trying to combine both a hardware and software argument. Software: Windows 7 is more secure/reliable than OSX. Mac users running Windows still HAVE TO BUY AN OS. Nothing like having lots of money to toss around, eh? Hardware: Can't argue with you there. Microsoft store are now selling "naked" PCs. Check em out.

    Why waste money?

  3. Nice set-up...

My Ion's drive me crazy as the laces loosen up too much. Went with the top of the line BOA, which rocks and featherly light....

The other issue I have with my Ion's is that the heel slips around a lot in the heel cup and cuffed up the boot. I can send pix if you like. Might need to get a bit of Shoe Goo.

  4. Too bad that Windows 7 phone won't work with Mac users. Given that a lot of people are switching to Macs it seems odd to release a new product that won't work with all operating systems.

Guess I stick with my iPhone.

    Soon. Here's the beta.

LOL...."a lot of people are switching to Macs". Funny. Are you kidding?

75% of Mac users own a PC. People don't get this. Apple doesn't WANT you to "switch", they want to SELL YOU ANOTHER DEVICE. Mac/IPod/IPhone/IPad....they all make you feel really cool, but they are not replacing anything you already own. If you're comparing your 9 year old PC to a new Mac....sure, your PC sucks. If you compare modern machines, PCs beat Mac in every department....including SECURITY. The reality is that you'll need connected services and be device angostic. That is where computing is going.....so spend hundreds and thousands of dollars on stuff, that's totally cool. The economy appreciates it!

I've said this 100 times. While your dated perception of MSFT may be (arguably) correct, the reality is that Apple and Google are now the bullies on the block.

  5. ok well whats good for food during a ride, i currently just use hammer gel and water. maybe the odd power bar. im also trying to drop a few pounds, so im trying to run a bit of deficit.

    570 miles? thats nuts!

Typically, 6 reps x 4 mins is the gold standard. If you're a power junkie, you'll do these reps at 125% of your FTP (one hour power).

what do you mean by that.?

6 reps of weight training? x 4min?.. ill assume FTP is a your max?

I'm racing Lance this weekend....although my shoulder is broken and uncertain if it will hold up. We'll see.

For food..you basically need calories, fluid and salt when you're riding over roughly 90 mins "pretty hard". Hammer makes good stuff if you can handle the taste.

If dropping a few pounds, it really comes down to diet....not workouts. Bums me out too as I workout quite a bit. MUCH easier to curb the diet down 500 or so calories than run/bike for an hour. Touchy subject with most people.

Vapor already covered the internals. You don't need a power meter, just go "balls out" for 4 mins, rest for 4 mins repeat. It would be nice to have some sort of measurement (heart rate monitor, etc) to understand your effort....but a stopwatch is the only required equipment.

    Have fun!

  6. I rode 570 miles last week....while working 50 hours. But, that wasn't in an effort to get "faster", it was training for some upcoming long races.

As mentioned, the ONLY way to get faster is to RIDE FASTER. The only way to ride faster is through intervals. Typically, 6 reps x 4 mins is the gold standard. If you're a power junkie, you'll do these reps at 125% of your FTP (one hour power).

Most performance cyclists chart their power using 10 seconds (sprint), 1 min (breakaway), 5 min (leadout), 20 mins and 60 mins. You can then plot out your power on a graph (see llink below) and determine your gaps.

Either way, this article is your best start:

    http://www.biketechreview.com/performance/supply/47-base-a-new-definition

Some cyclist are VERY analytical about their training time while some simply ride with their buddies and try to kick their ass. Both ways are effective. Get to faster...ride faster.

As for recovery, a typical performance program has different types of rides, one being a recovery ride. If you're looking for something illegal, use HGH. If you're looking for something legal...eat a healty diet. How much and what you eat for recovery is largely dependent on what your ate during your ride and how hard an effort you put forth.

    Yes..I'm a USA Cycling Coach too. ;o)

  7. well, I was just asking....... since you were talking about how its gonna be the future despite it's flaws. turned out it was a massive fail.

this is more like it http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/06/four-reasons-why-microsofts-kin-phone-failed/

if the kin is what's to come MS has some serious thinking to do.

BTW, their idea of the cloud if it is consistent with what they wanted to with the kin is sorta retarded, not to mention the monthly bill is the same as the iphone and more than some other smart phones that are actually smart.

Bob...you're the retard. Seriously Dude....do some homework. Good grief. I think you're going to join Macek in my "ignore post" feature. You talk so much **** without knowing what you're talking about. Sorry for being so rude....but sheeez dude, c'mon.

There was NEVER a point in time when the KIN was the future of MS Mobile. Did you even read any of the release notes? Good grief. Do you know the history of the Danger, Android and the iPhone? Do you even know who Nokia is and how much they dominate the market? Do you REALLY know where the money really is in mobile or are you just after cool **** that doesn't really do anything?

The point I made above...(original link) is definately still valid today. People will ultimately need a connected device WITH services. Have you tried a "Live Mesh" type of service? Yep...certainly confusing right now to the average joe today, but remember a few years back txting was considered technical.

"Apps" are NOT services! This is why the iPhone is getting its ass kicked by the Android my friend...and why one lil CEO isn't on Apple's board. An iPhone simply won't work unless you have tethering on a PC or a MAC. Duh. Cool silo'd device? Yes.

Anyhoo...there really isn't any use responding to you silly post. You sling mud without substance yet don't undersand the game.

Certainly not a good allocation of MS acquistion and development dollars. But, the good news is that MSFT makes more profit than Apple and Google COMBINED. Check the facts.

I'll leave you with this before the ignore button goes into effect. Has MSFT ever invented a product? Well...many. But, if you look at the markets where they excel (no pun), they weren't the first, but ultimately figured it out and came out with a better product at a lower price. The market doesn't lie.

  8. More info!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd LOVE to buy a SUP, but it's REALLY hard to find information on boards. I want something to paddle around on MN lakes...pretty simple, but don't want to bust the bank.

Would be cool if I could double it on my knees...but 90% SUP.

    Any tips?

  9. What's the diff? As long as everyone is on a level playing field the racing shouldn't change much.

I think that's kinda the point....this actually puts more ambiguity into the system.

Besides, shouldn't technology play a role in the progression of a sport?

I'm neutral on the issue...although definitely would prefer the ole 2 run combined time GS come back.

  10. kent, I was under the impression that att had ****ed up for the ipad thing to even be possible.

safari 5 is a desktop product, but since we're on it do I really need to mention any incarnation of IE? worst argument ever. if you want to include all webkit browsers they have some issues, still better than IE. I'm betting all webkit browsers combined have had less exploits than IE maybe even all webkit and gecko browsers combined. well, that might be a stretch.

the market share argument kinda goes out the window if you look at the malware circulating for windows mobile............. you pointed to a article that talks more about MS holes than anything else. not to mention the dude works for a company who's whole business is dependent on compromised windows products.

Bob - The point is that you said Apple and RIM are doing more than anyone else when, in fact, Apple is doing less than anyone and RIM is simply a non-factor for dev. Rather than address the problems of the iPhone, they are releasing a new phone. Wow....that's a great way to address a problem. What if MSFT chose not to go XP SP3 and told consumers to wait for Vista?

I'm totally onboard with hobbyists and technology (former Apple and open source guy myself), but when it comes to stuff that works....it's tough to argue the facts and trends.

As for requiring a PC/Mac...you might wanna dig a bit deeper into what Jobs is saying and where technology is going. Tethering is the fatal gap as is the App Store. Check back this thread in 12 months.

  11. Interesting change....although it's history kinda repeating itself. Back in the "old day" of ISF through the AST Series, you were pretty much caught a ton of flack if you showed up with speed gear. I think it was Marty F who was the most vocal. At the time, all the "fast guys" were kicking the speed suit guys asses anyway.....so it didn't really matter.

Around the FIS turnover, speed suits became more standard....but there was no PGS, it was all single (2x combined) when it actually made a different as the courses were over 1 minute. PSL didn't really matter because the runs were won/lost by seconds, not nanoseconds.

Anyhoo....PGS kinda ruined the sport. I'd much rather see the direction go back to PSL being the most popular "spectator event" and GS going back to single run (with gee suit).

  12. Pretty interesting read....apologies for the Fox url, but couldn't find this type of connection on other sites.

Appears that history might repeat itself. In the case if Ixtoc, most experts basically say that it cleaned itself up. Certainly not saying that should be the case here...but find it very interesting, esp considering the billions that will be spent (and perhaps wasted) during the process.

The short and long term effects are sickening...as will be the economics.
