  1. I've traveled with a fully setup 35" board in my hand as a piece of carry on as recently as Oct and had no troubles. Put it on its back in the overhead rack and other stuff can sit right on top of it.

I've always want to take a longboard to Kona. Have fun . . . post pics!

  2. I was looking at this book in a Borders the other day. Scanned through a good deal of it, enjoyed what I read of the text, but was surprised that it really has relatively few photos or illustrations. My impression is that it might be a more valuable book for instructors (like you all), rather than an actual geezer-novice (like me).

While I'm giving my $.02, my fear in snowboarding is always framed by my greater experience skateboarding - - everytime I fall while learning to snowboard, and trying to learn to carve, I shake myself off and think: "Man, how much worse would that've been on asphalt?!"

Maybe I should try and write "No Fall Longboarding"

  3. hmmm.... nice boards

    when you first buy them...

my loaded is now softer; less stable and doesn't feel as comfortable to ride around town anymore; so much money, it should last alot longer than it seems like it inevitably will.

another two months (i've had it for about that long) and i'll have a new wall decoration... oh boy.... :angryfire

I have many miles on my vanguard. It looks beat to hell, but the flex is just as snappy as the day I first set my feet upon it (2 years ago).

King - I don't know how experienced a skateboarder you are so forgive me if I'm telling you something you already know but . . .

It's possible that your loaded is a lemon, but are you sure that the deck being "softer" is why your ride is less stable/comfortable?

Lots of other things change too as you break-in a new board - wheels loose their slickness, bushings soften, etc.

  4. If you're sour on big zigs, there are a couple of lesser-known alternatives worth considering:

    • 77mm Landyachtz Hawgs - I ride them on my vanguard - smoothe, grippy and centerset so you can flip them for more even wear
    • Earthwing 76mm Superballs - Don't own a set but I've ridden them - with a 59mm contact patch they might be the grippiest big wheel out there. They've just been released in 66mm diameter too.

Oh yeah . . . fwiw both of these wheels are black and look pretty badass.

  5. it's both....there are some guys who train specifically to win this race but it's also an excuse to get together and skate. I've been talking to my wife about that weekend and my desire to possibly race it. A bunch of guys I skate with have done it and or plan on doing this years race. It's part of a whole Skate weekend in NYC, there is a slide comp in Brooklyn on Sunday too

That's right. It's a race or a cruise, all up to you. There are sponsors and prizes for the winners (and for some of the cruisers if you're pushy enough).

The slide comp on Sunday is actually at the Cloisters in Fort Tryon park, way up at the northern tip of Manhattan, home to what is arguably one of the city's best hills (in terms of pavement, pitch and traffic conditions).

  6. Though this is not exactly a carver's event per se, it is a total blast and a chance to meet a lot of riders. There were probably about 100 people last year, mostly from around the NE, but also crews from down south, up north, and out west. There were skate-luminaries like Cliff Coleman, Sergio Yuppie and Adam Colton as well.

    Saturday, June 7th
at 12 noon. We will meet at the corner of 59th and Central Park West. Around 8pm we are going to have the most kick ass party hosted by Earthwing Skateboards, it will be held at 210 Cook Street in Brooklyn. This building is a perfect party location with a half pipe in the Earthwing space and a huge roof where we are going to have some bands play... I just talked to Keegan Ales and they are in to bring by some kegs of Keegan Ale and barbecue. On Sunday Earthwing is holding their second annual slide/wheelie event in the Cloisters, around 4PM (directions to come)

We are going to have great events great prizes and a great party.

In the past Fred and I have wished that the events weren't over so soon for people who come so far, sometimes overseas. This year will be the first year we have a full weekend event!

If it rains Saturday we will have to… Have the Central Park Race on Sunday maybe 11pm then the Slide Event at 4pm and then the Party at 8pm just so everyone who traveled so far can make all the events ... all times are subject to change...

    Check
for details we will put a central park page on there soon
  7. These are some photos of the RAZOR that Sean managed to take during the 2008 SES.

    . . .

I was riding this board (176) with Catek FR2s limited and Andy Warhol Burton boots. The angles were 47 and 44.

    . . .

Yeah, thanks! - - I've been watching this thread, thinking about a Razor for next season too.

Alex - Can I ask, what's your weight and bootsize?

  8. Why not directly get a deluxe softboot instead of putting in a deluxe liner. In my experience they are way better and stiffer than the hardest boots either Salomon or Burton sells?

I ride a Burton DriverX at the moment but will definitely switch back to deeluxe next season cause the Burtons are way too soft and that blody lacing system means rather blood cut off than closed properly. I already ride them with thermoflex liners cause the stock liners were nothing but a joke.

I have deeluxe IDs (soft boot) with the standard liners.

Would thermoflex liners help cut down on heel lift? Anybody know where I can get some?

  9. Sorry about that - - I see you do alot of business here, and I am a noob without much of a profile. I added my location (Brooklyn - you got a problem wit dat?), and turned on the option that lets members send me email. I ride asphalt alot more than I ride snow, and I spend more time reading/posting at the longboarding forum, silverfishlongboarding.com. I have a clean record buying and selling a bit of stuff over there.

As for price, I see US$389 for FR2 direct from Catek. From reading posts about these bindings here, it seems like Catek is always coming out with tweaks to the design, and upgrades to parts. I also see that people swap highbacks, straps, and do other customizations. So a "great price" is going to depend on what you're selling: model, year, condition.

  10. Let me know closer to the time. If we can set up a date and time I'll bring a spare board and bindings, it's up to you as to whether you want to try it out or not. If you want to get a feel for it, you could rent some ski boots and give it a shot.

Otherwise I'd be happy to be up on a green trail with you giving you some pointers. I'm no instructor but I can pass on some of the things that made a difference for me. If you wanted to go out with a regular instructor in the morning and meet up in the afternoon for some "carve specific", that would work too.

Sunshine is a fabulous hill to learn on. Lots of wide mellow green runs to play on for beginners. You'll love it!

That's a very fine offer. I could plan to meet up with you at Sunshine on Thursday or Friday. I'll PM you my cellphone number.

  11. Hey Jim, are you going to be here the end of March? Your dates say Feb 27 to March 2, but if it's March 27 I will be around, most likely at Sunshine as the snow is better there later in the season.

Let me know. I can maybe give you some pointers later in the day when my legs have given up on me. And if you want a carving board to ride, I can bring one of my spares for you to play on.

    DOH! -- yes March 27-April 2.

Any pointers would be great. Re equipment, I'd love to try anything, but I'll be renting. It's not likely that I'll be able to rent hardboot stuff, is it? Should I even try? I've only ridden softies.

  12. Hello <<first post>> !

I'll be in Banff from 2/27-3/2, learning to carve a snowboard (hopefully) while the wife and son ski. I'm a middleaged longboard skater who's spent only 3 days on the snow so I'd doubt I'd be much fun for you to ride with, but I'd be pleased to meet up and say cheers, share a beer . . .

Also, I'll be looking to hire an instructor for some lessons. Are either of you qualified to teach?

I'd greatly any suggestions you might have like, which mountain would be the best for me start out at, etc.

    Jim
