Where to carve out west

Having just graduated from college and started working, I now have some money (key word some) money to blow on a trip out west. I've been to Breckenridge, Powder Mt, Jackson Hole, and Aspen (back when I was a kid and I got to go riding on my mom's dime). My friends and I are looking to go out west for a week and we have heard great things about Tahoe (although were are not set on going there). Any advice on good places to look for deal on airfare, accomidations, lift tickets, etc. Also any advice on resort not to miss for great powder and carving. The date for the trip will be late march, if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any advice you can offer,

Joe

Tahoe offers lots of options. Most areas are not "destination resorts," but rather primarily cater to weekenders from CA/NV. Heavenly is the closest to an all-inclusive resort, plus has the benefit of gambling casinos and night life right at the base. However, I don't love the place for carving (others will argue this with me). Kirkwood is 45 minutes from South Lake Tahoe and a better place to carve than Heavenly, plus you'll find Tahoecarvers folks there. That's kind of the summary for South Lake Tahoe. If you stay in South Lake, you'll mostly ride there (it looks closer on the map than it really is to the North Shore ski areas).

Staying in Reno is always an alternative, and a cheap one for the most part. However, you'll have to drive about an hour each way to skiing. Good casinos there and pretty good nightlife. Whore houses nearby if that's of interest.

North Lake is where I mostly ride. Towns are Truckee and Tahoe City. Squaw is the biggest mountain in Tahoe (Heavenly might argue) and has ski-in ski-out accommodations, but they aren't cheap. Squaw has great carving terrain and good night life at the base. I ride more at Alpine Meadows which is similar to Squaw in terms of terrain, but just doesn't have as much of it. It also has no hotels or nightlife at its base. Northstar has a base village but it is very tame and very family oriented (read no night life). If you stay in Tahoe City or Truckee, there's lots going on at night.

Regardless of where you go, you'll fly into Reno. Its a nice airport and it rarely snows at the airport. Best bet is to reserve a 4wd car plus a regular car and then if there's no snow in the forecast the day before you arrive, just pick up the regular car. You'll only need 4WD if it snows and you don't want to deal with chains.

Email or post up with any questions.

I think you should make your trip to SES if you aren't tied into certain dates/locations. If I were planning a trip and had flexibility in location/timing, that's what I'd do.

I like Heavenly...but I also like bicycling and astronomy and malamutes, so don't call me an expert. Heavenly has some great views and nice blues for old ladies like me with bad knees....

Saying that....

It's crowded with people from the Bay Area-not that I don't like the Bay Area-just not all of them stopped midrun lined up treeline to treeline like skiiers tend to do

The snowboarders tend to be jibbers with attitudes. My best conversation so far is with a hardbooter on the gondola...

As for Utah, I went to the Canyons last year-combo of the old Park City West resort and a condo development...the condo development part is FLAT, and, coming from me, that's saying something....I bunged my ankle something awful the first day and plan to go back this year to check out the rest of the resort. Then I plan to check out Solitude in 2007...

Nice thing about Tahoe is the lake. I too want to check out Kirkwood but the one road closes with a big dump and I'm "scared" I'll be stuck out there..

Utah/SLC/Park City...Park City has free buses that have stops at the Canyons and Park City resort-Deer Valley also is right next to town but is ski only. Park City also has restaurants and other entertainment...

Either choice is a good one. Both have shuttle services although the Reno shuttles are MUCH cheaper than the SLC shuttles

kirkwood is a badass mountain, but a bit of a drive to get there and back unless you can afford to stay at the lodge. sick terrain though.
