I thought the carriers were all plastic. I noticed these have the aluminium base plate like my old performance binders?

Could very well be.  I thought the Carrier was the only bindings with the quick / no tool adjustment. 

 

I would need to get out an old catalog to verify.  

 

I think they are actually steel?   Side note.  The "Physics Carrier" is all plastic , they are also listed in the for sale thread.
