  1. dont freak out about it, its really a small-medium scary surgery. The first week up until they take the long stitch out is the worst.

Yeah, and don't expect much sympathy from anyone. Everywhere you turn you'll meet people who've gone through it and had a rougher time since they had an earlier version of the operation. :-)

I think they forgot to install my barometer, though. 8 months and I still can't predict a change in weather.

  2. I don't think I can play ultimate again, though... running is hard, and I can't even conceive of cutting and sprinting right now.

Yeah, ultimate is rough on the body but I've been playing indoor again since Jan and did a weekend tournament in the snow (Sudbury Snowplate) last weekend. Really tiring but the "ground" was "soft".

  3. A week after my MRI results diagnosed a fully torn ACL, most of the MCL, and lateral meniscus I met so many people who'd had the ACL reconstruction that . I tore it playing indoor ultimate in Feb last year. Surgery in early July. I was boarding this January at six months post-op. But only about half a day at a time. By 5 hours it hurt too much but my turns were really good for the first 2hrs.

As others have said, do your PT stretches and exercises. Especially in the first 6 weeks. But nothing forced since it's mostly range of motion and bringing down the swelling in the early stages.

Make sure you build up quad and hamstring strength BEFORE surgery if you can. It helps pave the way for a quicker recovery.

  4. Hey there,

Count me in for the 27th! Chris, you're so cool for working on this.

Much thanks to Mike at MSLM (Jan 2) for letting me know this was already in the works. This was my first (half) day back on the slopes since the last SOS on Feb 6th last year (I tore my ACL a few days later). There was a little rust to scrape away and it wasn't the screws in my knee (they're titanium and don't rust :-) ).

Anyway, I hope to be at ECES this year also but I need to ride some more before I can book it.

  5. Dr. M. Clarfield and the Sports Medicine Specialists clinic represents what is wrong with medicine. Had an appoinment changed, then spent over a hour in his clinic - no doctor/no customer care. I guess he thinks by treating the Leafs he walks on water.

Telehealth Ontario - is a complete waste of taxpayers money - absolutely clueless and their only function is to convionce Ontario Tax payers to stay out of the emergency wards.

Sorry to rant, but I have spent too much time to get a simple thumb injury evaluated.

Good, fast, and cheap. Pick at most two. It applies to most things. All we really picked was cheapest and "not bad".

That's interesting about Telehealth. When I tore up my knee she was adamant I go to a hospital immediately and the emerg nurse's comment was "that's what they always say". It's still probably a waste.

But I agree with Dr. Zone because I've seen it in other businesses. When working harder has no effect on your compensation you just stop trying and just do your job in more of a work to rule fashion. We've told doctors and nurses through our governments that we won't pay them well and they can't easily just pick another company or do a little freelance work on the side to get ahead.

I found the docs and physios at Sports Med Specialists to be good when I went a few years ago but they're too well known and you end up with that cattle herding arrangement because they're so busy. I've been going to Athlete's Care and it's better.

The biggest problem is the lack of discussion to fix it. As soon as the word "private" is used there's some sort of panic and personal attacks come out. The truth is we have a lot of private delivered care funded from OHIP. The other topic that gets raised agin and again is queue jumping. But that also happens already. Much of it probably for medical reasons but some because of celebrity or connections. So we've already got multi tiers. Ask your MP/MPP how long he waits to see a doctor once he got elected. How about his family?

  6. Well, it's been a month and I've posted my pics. Enjoy.

Something I really need to consider for next time is to bring or arrange for some cones/bulbs like the ones that ski school classes use for turn practise and mark off my effective range. I think people see a big camera lense and assume it's got a lot of zoom.

I've been off the slopes and generally inactive since shortly after SOS due to a knee injury on Feb 10th (hyperextended it playing ultimate).

I'm hoping I can get in a day or two before the season ends here.

  7. Hi there, don't usually prowl here until after the new year. Saw Gabe and Andrew at MSLM on Sunday (9th).

Feb 6th works for me. Friday can also work. For Osler, I'd almost definitely make it for a Friday. Oh. And I have a nice digital camera now (EOS-20D) and could take pictures for the group.

I loved the compact size of it though...any suggestions?

You need to separate the focus speed (time to lock after pressing half way) from the shutter lag after focusing (time after full press (from half press lock) that it takes to take the picture).

There are plenty of little cameras now with almost no shutter lag (I have the Pentax Optio S4 that fits in an Altoids tin). But compact consumer digitals typically do not have fast autofocus and that could make it very difficult for action.

www.imaging-resource.com does reviews with measurements for stuff like that.

As a point of reference over the last year we have 34 DVD's and 110CD's of archived images, I'd have at least 3 times that if we shot RAW regularly.

Yeah. I know what you mean. I'd have 60 DVDs for the last year if I kept the raw files from all my film scanning.

I doubt the DOD cares about jpeg artifacts. Like I said. To each his own.

I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. And we have different cameras so their relative strengths and weaknesses will dictate the workflow.

My film camera (EOS-3) can shoot continuous at 7fps and I thought that was too slow to be a particularly useful motor drive and typically only ever shot 2-3 in a burst (occasionally 5-6) so the 5fps on the EOS-20D doesn't impress me much. It's simply too slow and a Toronto Sun sports photographer (Stan Behal) once did a talk here and was asked about using motor drive. He had (film) cameras that could shoot 10fps and he said timing the shutter was the only way. Basically the continuous mode never saved a shot and he's certainly used it plenty. 0.1s is just too long.

As for jpegs I actually shoot raw+small_jpeg so I have 1728x1152 jpegs saved for quickly reviewing on a computer and the card writing is fairly fast so I've never run out of buffer in normal use. I've just developed a light trigger finger perhaps. The on-camera review is very fast (and available even while writing to the card) so I can delete bad shots as I go quite efficiently but the screen is small.

Upload them to a server sometime later and poof everyone would have images nice and easy...now I just need to insure orders to the east coast.

You should go quality over quantity.

I've got an EOS-20D now. I prefer shooting raw (~90 shots/1GB) and I'm learning my way around the post-production stuff.

Good luck fitting it in your little camera bag!

What's really funny is a lot of people think it's got a lot of magnification so they do their big carves too far away...

Then there's Rob Sydia. He tried to see how close he could get without hitting me. Which is why I like shooting from next to a lift tower. I'm not planning to cushion anyone's fall....

I've got a couple shots from that one but I think they're from the second try after we'd put the bench back. I don't see you in there. There were a couple others shooting so I'm sure you'll be in there somewhere.

  16. Yeah, I know. It's been a while. But at least I finally scanned and posted the pics before this year's event. My thanks to Jack and company for delaying ECES2004 into March so I could at least claim that much!
