AAAAh a rare misunderstood beauty. glad to see I am not the only one who appreciates a classic. there aren't enough of us to keep them in production.

Maybe there aren't but there are some crazy folks out there who do something incedible to M-Roadster. Just today at autocross I approached guy in such a car with plate Turbo M. I asked him if he really turbocharged it. He said "yes" So as usual curiosity in this case would be in place I asked him about horespower now. He said: 700HP at crank

Just take your Ferrari to garbage if you do not know how to drive it. That guy knows how to drive his little, light M-Roadster with 700HP engine.

that probably voided the warranty quicker than it could go 0-60

depends on who did it. there are several aftermarket companies that have agreements with BMW similiar to Saleen Mustangs etc. Gotta love a BMW anyway but the M-roadster was a beauty and it made a phenomenal race car.

I new a guy in SC that gutted them and put full race gear in them. Hard to beat on the track. 700 Hp !!!! now that is a serious power to weight ratio. It'd take a Beemer to handle the strain and keep it on the road.

Color me a skeptic. If you couldn't hear the turbo from 100yds away, there's no way that car was making 700cHP.

The M is a very fun car, but it's no good as a race car. It proved to be such a poor handling car that BMW dropped its factory effort with that car after less than one season. The same characteristics that make it a blast to drive make it horrid as a race car.

well i know Dinan tunes cars but i'm pretty sure your warranty is void because they change everything but the looks of your car. I went to the World of Wheels in boston and they had a BMW 3 or 5 series that could g 0-60 in around 3.5. The thing is, they tune the car so it actually has better overall gas milage and doesn't look fast at all. I would love to pull up to a light in one of those sleeper cars and burn a corvette or something. That would be awesome. I do love corvettes though.:biggthump

At what we are doing nobody cares about warranty (except maybe me so far). Everybody tries to win so, most folks mod cars. I only plan on race compound tires and frozen rotors plus much better brake pads. I got new once on warranty from BMW after last events (includingreally hard braking) at Pocono Raceway.

The folks you meet at events know more than many (if not most) technicians at dealers repair shops and they mod their cars themselves. They know what they are doing and what to expect. That is why many have cars after warranty already.

A former boss had an M3 tubbed out for a race car-it hit the wall one afternoon while he was racing. Broke leg, broke neck-just barely made it out of the car before it exploded......

He was off work for 1 year...

And what is the point? Wel I know people who twisted their leg when waking up and trying to stand up from armchair. That onvolved doctor and labs visits, pain, braces...

You have to accept risks and anticipate them. If you do not you will have trouble with normal life going through it.

Heck! Do you carve hard enough or are a skidder on bunny hill?

Just remember that anything can happen to anybody any day. Ifthis happend to you just during regular and careful activity of the day wouldn't you be sorry that you did not chance to try some crazy stuff before it happend?

So mind your age. I mind mind mine, and those folks mind their and we all do what we want to try in our lives.

What for? Try to show off at Corvette at SCCA or our events. That's a challenge! To show some folk on street who knows zit about cars and his knowledge is based on what sales person told him about horsepower in his car is easy. Nobody competes against dummies.

3.5 to 60 may be useless on some tracks. Actually, the car will be looking differently from othersd if it is properly tuned, because it will have different suspension, wheels, tires and brakes. In autocross events horespower is secondary. Folks in their Miatas with 140HP beat very good folks in M3's with 330HP by seconds. There is number of other factors that average driver does not have even clue.

Actually not neccesarily true. It does not need to be noisy, but certainly you can hear.

Now why whouldn't I trust guy who starts in special class for that (U-unlimited) where everybody even with EVO's and Porsche GT-3 have computer with special mapping and turbos? I am not talking about occasional guy. These are our regular events where freqently we have over 100 drivers driving one of the best cars you can see.

M is actually very good handling and BMW dropped it only for a moment. Now you have Z4 M-roadster. The car is light and has low polar inertia. It simply beats most of the cars and with turbo it beats Viper on straight easily. That's the fact.

You do not know much about M handling, do you? They sit on pavement like a duck. If you refer to M3 then this car is for track as it is relatively heavy. M-Roadster is about 800-1000 lighter and it is car good for anything.

M-Roadster was in production for more than one season and now it comes back as Z4 M-Roadster.

He's right on the early handling problems. all though the articles he is quoting are from the bmw world and probably don't compare to american cars anyway. the Z3 didn't meet the standard set by beemer and the problems were addressed in the upgrade to Z4. the Mcoupe version has different handling characteristics than the roadster. Also like all BMW's out there there are a lot of aftermarket upgrades available and places like Dinan have agreements with BMW to split warranty obligations with. there are several aftermarket shops which even apply there own VIN to the car and warranty them inhouse. The Coupe was cut from the lineup from lack of sales more than anything else.

Hmmmm...I don't recall saying anything that would deserve such a flame....

Anger issues, obviously..

As for risks of living, since I work as a MD exclusively in hospitals and ER's, I know MUCH better than you the risks of living, so do not go into your obviously heartfelt but pathetic rant. Until you get to explain to a new widow how her husband dropped dead playing softball or a father who watched his only child run a red light and get hit by another car that you couldn't save him, you have NO right to lecture to me about risk taking.

I was speaking more to the issue that my former boss lost about $250,000 of income racing, and is now currently running his business into the ground because he probably had some degree of a head injury, as well

Jeez Skatha. Cut the guy some slack. Remember that English is his second language (kind of like many Americans living in TX). Stuff/comments/irony/sarcasm, etc. don't always translate very well. Add an anonymous internet board and it makes is exceptionally easy to offend people (especially those who are easily offended anyway).

Makes sense. Autocross takes so much skill and i envy anyone who is really good enough to handel their cars like that. I am aware that its not the car, its what you do with the car that matters. Exactly the same thing with snowboarding. Get us some video!!!

I love rallycross too! One of the main reasons i got the game TOCA 3 is because of the enormous variety of rallycross events they have in the game. I always end up playing against these british guys and they got the game down. Perfect racing lines and everything. I'm sure the real thing is infintly more difficult and complex.

AutoX and rallyx are two things hope to get into when I get a job that pays more than 8.25 an hour. :biggthump

i'm downloading quicktime now to see your vid. some how my sister never got it on her computer. I'm sure it kicks ass.

edit: that video is impressive. I could only wish to be able to handle a car like that. Some impressive cars in the parking lot too.

That Escort Cosworth at the end was the real deal, too. Stripped, caged, antilag, <b>7</b> speed sequential gearbox, etc etc. Prepped by Vermont Sportscar. It was for sale at the event for a mere $125,000.

Click thumbnails for much bigger versions:

<a href="http://www.cf-cars.com/images/cosworth%20escort1.jpg"><img src="http://www.cf-cars.com/images/cosworth%20escort1 thumb.jpg"></a>

<a href="http://www.cf-cars.com/images/cosworth%20escort2.jpg"><img src="http://www.cf-cars.com/images/cosworth%20escort2 thumb.jpg"></a>

I'll see if I can dig up some bumper cam footage with sound tonight.

I wonder why so expensive. The new tube version of Focus kit runs at $35k. Add to that engine for $20-30k, $10k suspension and probably $10k XTrack or Hewland sequential transmission and you have brand new BTCC/WTCC car.

Why one would run some old beaten modded car?

Not to mention that for Vette C06 with all ready except perhaps R-compound tires you pay slightly more than 60k.

Ohh I forgot... they doi not sound like that car :D

Hey do not exaggerate. I did not mean to flame you, but I do not think that calling memento mori's by people is encouraging to try something new even if it risky. I am not the one with lose screw in my head (too old for that), but I do not rise funds to have "fancy" retirement when I am already half-disabled and cannot do what once I could try and I missed. I bet many forget about that.

BTW You haven't seen flames on this forum. You would need to ask Jack to bring backups from a few years ago :D

That's not a modded street car. It's a built-from-the-tube-frame-up rally car that has road car-looking bodywork attached. It has an FIA cage, an FIA fuel cell, etc etc etc. It's a homologation special.

Nevermind the fact that this car is made for dirt, and is faster on dirt than a z06 Vette is on pavement.
