RDY_2_Carve
I just read this on the carvers almanac under the Donek section (at the top): "Previous to '04, Donek topsheets were somewhat prone to scratches and breakage, so Donek sold gaskets to go under some stiffer bindings. If you use Bomber TD1 bindings with these boards, you should use the gaskets to make sure your warranty remains valid (TD2 bindings don't need the gaskets). For '04, Sean added another layer of lamination to the topsheet that provides more durability - the entire topsheet is basically a stomp pad." I just bought a used Axis 167 and I use TD1's. I haven't mounted them yet but now I'm worried as I just came across this... How do I know what year this Axis is? The topsheet looks pretty durable to me. The topsheet is not smooth at all...more "bumpy". I'd hate to have to get some silly gaskets so I can use my TD1's. Here's a pic of the board tail so you can get a better idea of the surface: Help! nekdut
Most Doneks have a build date on them where the name and model are listed. The newer topsheets feel more tacky and rubbery. The older ones were smoother and became scratched quite easily. I cant say for sure, but from your picture, that looks like the newer topsheet. Build date on the nose then I take it? I'll look more closely.. It definately feels "tacky and rubbery" so I think I'm good to go. and doesnt look used, either! nice Used four times as I understood it. I'm hoping this is the perfect tool for NM slopes. I just hope it's long enough for a 5'6" 160lb frame. Thanks as always for the replies! ;)
D-Sub
should be fine! also...if youre worried about thrashing the topsheet, just put some gasket material under there. I heard people used to cut open gallon milk bottles and cut gaskets using the plate as a guide... and that Sean at donek has some he made, too...try him? snow|3oarder
the topsheets are still somewhat prone to scratching...even the new ones
Mike T
... doesn't have the name and "born on", that seems to be reserved for FC and race models. But yeah, that looks like one of the newer topsheets. Although I'd still ask Sean whether he recommends gaskets for your TD1's.
