another nice day and grooming was good, but a bit icy in the morning and starts to get soft by 11am. good carving and feeling good, but on my third lift ride i met old time skier fred at the top of chair 2 and he told me about johnasmo's crash and broken leg. that put a damper on my riding and made me cautious. johnasmo was killing it yesterday on a donek proto type that he designed and went back to a coiler after his break and got injured right after we parted ways at 3pm. was a good carving day and rode strong, but felt bad and sorry for john... got a hug from a good friend at the end of my day then met my nephew who is a teacher on spring break gave me a ride down the hill...

nice bluebird morning and icy bumpy groomers on chair 2 and on the frontside. rode with dredman all day and cruised the backside and waited for the frontside to soften up. it was still fun just cruising around. it has been on the cooler side and i was very cold wearing my spring gear. some areas carved better than others. was a fun day riding with dredman...

overcast day and the grooming sucked on ed's first thing in the morning. met up with dredman and decided to go to the backside. the backside had really good groomers, but it is the backside. silver tip is the only good pitch and it was not groomed. cruised around and wasn't feeling it. had things to do in town so called it early...

went a little later and went straight to chair 1 to go to the backside. got on chair 1 at 9:40am and it stops just when i am at the bottom of the bowl for a few minutes. got to the top and the generator was running and they stop loading people so not much people on the backside. made a few runs and notice people was getting off chair 1. silver tip was not groomed again, but what was groomed was very good. today was the last day the the west bowl was open so did a couple runs on hellfire. saw dredman riding with skier fred... today was fun making quick turns on the virus...

a nice blue sky morning and groomers was better than i thought it would be. ed's run was good carving and there was only a handful of people all morning so stayed good all day. it is so much more fun when the fear factor is not in the back of my mind. a cooler morning and groomers was good early and slowly gets soft with the sun shinning. just as it starts to get soft by noon the high thin clouds build and kept the snow from getting too soft so it was good longer. was going to leave at 2:30pm, but stayed another hour...

another nice morning and groomers was good. a little chilly in the morning from clear skies at night which makes for good groomers. the top of chair 2 is always good and ed's was good too. stayed on chair 2 most of the day cause it was good. did one run to the top and found it was on the icy side and chilly. saw dredmans tracks, but did not see him so did not ride with him. was on my own pace and had a great day. today was not as good as yesterday, but super fun and rode strong... again soft in the noon time...

got on hill and saw a hardbooter and said hi then dredman pulls up. met terry and the three of us start the day together. foggy early then slowly lifts with some sun poking thru now and then. the groom was not too good on the front so we went to the backside in the morning. the groomers on the backside was really good for this late in the season. i cruised around and watched dredman carve the icy groomers in amazement. was a fun day with the mini crew...

a beautiful bluebird day. met terry first thing in the morning and did some backside runs and waited for the frontside to soften up. we had a great day of riding around and carved when it got soft. i left terry about 2:30pm then i went to chair 2 to power carve the slush for an hour or so. we seemed to catch the right time as the snow soften in different areas. was a really fun day...

high overcast just above the big and lighting was flat. groomers was not good and some spots was solid ice. in survival mode on the virus thunder and cruised around the backside and some down the front. took a break just after noon and a friend and her friend came to sit with me and as we chatted the alert helicopter flies by. we were sitting by the back window and could see where it landed and loaded. heard later someone hit a tree. so took a longer than normal break and with the alert helicopter and the bad conditions decided to call it. not the best... it has been uncrowded the past few days...

day 70 for me and the last day of 2022/2023 ski season. a nice mostly sunny morning and warm. took my time and got up a little later and grabbed the amp5 softies and cruised around and took it easy and just enjoyed the day. snow was already soft when i got there and got softer as the sun was shining. thought i enjoy the last day so had a pizza at the baselodge and just as i got done eating my nephew walks by. he was going to make a few runs then clear out his locker. the clouds starts to build and the soft slush starts to firm up a little so we made a few runs and called it before the crazies get crazier then we drove off into the sunset... well, not the best season as we had very little good powder days and not good coverage all season and we never got the really good groom i call "velvet cords" where the real magic happens... anyways, 70 days, 1,426,206 vertical feet and ranked 62...

rode the amp5 from 10 till 2:30...

Deep thoughts by Rhyan*:
Sunday, April 9, 2023:

6 a.m. report:

Good morning, Whitefish!

It's going to be an absolute beach party out there for the last day of the season, with the forecast calling for a high of 43 on the upper mountain, 51 in the village, moderate winds and mostly sunny skies. We received about an inch of graupel snow yesterday from those spring squalls rolling through, and even that little bit does a lot to keep runs fresh. We'll be working with the spring freeze-thaw today, and I bet runs will soften up pretty quickly. The north side will be skiing best to start.

The Patrol Fund's End-of-Season Party will be at the Great Northern Bar & Grill tonight with live music by Honey Bandit starting at 8 p.m.! Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the summit patrol shack. All proceeds go to avalanche education courses and our avalanche dog program.

And a special note from me: This is my last rambling of deep thoughts! I'll be retiring from my post after five years of snow reporting here at Whitefish Mountain Resort. It’s been an absolute honor to share all these mornings over the past winter seasons with this amazing mountain community. Shout out to everyone I’ve got to meet and share a chair with! It’s truly wild that this has been my job: to be first up in the wee hours of the winter mornings, in the rain, shine, blizzard or bitter cold; to be the eyes of the valley, to share the stoke, to light the beacon, and on bad days, tell it like it is! I’ve always said if the reports aren’t helpful, at least they’re entertaining, right?! (Or was it the other way around?) It’s time to pass the torch, or the pen, or the snow stake, and I’m so excited to hear the next voice and the next set of deep thoughts. It’s so cool that we even have this written report format, and I think that it helps build a sense of community and fuels the collective consciousness of the Big Mountain. The name of the mountain itself is so classic and cliché, it goes full circle, and becomes legendary. There’s been 75 years of history up here, and that character matters more than ever in this day and age!

To anyone who’s found some inspiration on Inspo, truly made 1,000 turns on 1000 Turns, or got lost in the fog but maybe found themselves along the way, thanks and cheers! All right, no more deep thoughts for me. Time to go skiing! Have a great closing day. We’ll see you on the mountain.
