Come on!  What's the nitty-gritty??

looks like an opportunity for a back to back comparison Barry.

@workshop7 did your  Contra come with a tune, or did you do your own?

I had a 167 Throttle with the same topsheet. My first symmetrical, square-tail board. Loved it til I got a Donek FC1.

That Throttle is my favorite snowboard graphic ever.

I had it tuned.  Didn't like the flat bottom at all.  Now it's 1* base and 2* sides.

@barryjMy opinion of the Contra 162 is simple.  Best hardboot board I've ridden to date.  I've never had more fun and laughed harder while riding than I did today.  It's turny and sticks like my MK did, but it doesn't require anywhere near as much effort.

My 162 is 19.5 at the waist and has a SCR of 9.  I was on my new Mountain Slope boots and it was my first day on the Contra so I went for the shallow green first.  Not enough speed, was my immediate reaction.  It tracks well and is predictable at slower speeds, but I needed to go faster.

The steeper runs revealed a stability that was impressive.  I loved the MK for its ability to navigate narrow or crowded trails.  This has that same ability.  It's just more relaxing and doesn't ever feel like it will bite you if you don't give it your complete attention.  This is what I always felt while riding the MK.

I am so impressed with my 162 Contra.  I only had it out for half a day with bindings and boots that are not yet  completely dialed in.  I imagine it will only get better as I get used to the radically different side cut.  I can't wait to ride its big brother, my 178 Contra 11scr.

I'm sure that she was excited if it compares to my experience, Bruce has found pure magic in the Contra. Holds an edge like it will never let go, at the same time feels so relaxed and forgiving. Makes big round turns but you set it on edge and it goes sideways ! Damp but springy, playful and easy. Softer snow, ice and all between I don't have anything bad to say. I love my Monster for PowMow but I'm afraid I won't be taking her out anymore. I am having so much fun on the Contra it's sad that I'm wearing a mask because everyone is missing the big grin on my face! See you on Friday, Sunday or Monday? YES I deserve a four day weekend !

Where would someone go for a topsheet like that or any custom top?

This is Raff's email address.

vaz_art@yahoo.com

Raff is a fantastic artist.  She has several graphic choices within the list of stock Donek graphics.  With this board, I sent her pictures of an old Rossi Throttle and had her change the relevant Rossi info to Coiler info.  The general graphic design is exactly like the Throttle.

Ask Bruce, Sean, Mark, etc what they want to receive as far as the image format is concerned and then relay that information to the artist.

I hope she exceeds expectations!  If you want art from her, don't delay.

A massive Thank You and Happy Holidays to you all! Sending gratitude for the much-needed support this year, the year of all battles. Raffaella is doing well, we seem to have reached a plateau on her healing. Raffi is still on full-time oxygen supply and must continue her 3-times daily heart meds and will be injecting daily blood thinners for the remainder of her life.
We are extremely grateful for our family, friends, supporters and our amazing medical team of specialists who truly saved our lives.
Because Raffaella’s illness has only been studied for 15 years we do not know much about her future. The Doctors last told us that Raff’s stats are putting her in a group of the 12% of patients that will make it 5 years or longer. We do not know much about her prognosis but we are living our life with joy and love, every day at a time!
Hug the ones you love, love the ones you need, and open your heart to others,

Thank you for all the support, Raffaella, Crispin and Billie.

I'd like to add that the contra is an amazing board.  i just got my 174 this season and wow.  My riding has gotten so much better.  I laugh all day long, kept saying I shouldn't be able to do this!  Can turn like a madman, runs over anything and did I mention it turns??  This is loads of fun.  Don't get me wrong, it does not replace my nirvana vcam, but it fills in gaps I did not know i had...

May I ask in what situations you prefer the contra and in which you prefer the vcam? 😃

The contra rides

The contra is great in all conditions.  Its a different variable radius than the vcam.  Vcam is 181, contra is 174.  The vcam is easier to ride and more smooth variations in surface or snow.  It also likes speed a bit more, even though it has a tight radius as well.  The Vcam is a nirvana and likes to move and make smooth turns.  The contra likes uniform snow, meaning not soft in one spot or icy in the next.  It rides well on any condition, but because it is so turny, it feels better on a more uniform surface.  Does well is slush, ice, or snow just needs to be the same because of how hard it digs in.

So, that all said, when its march in michigan, I take the vcam.  its good for hard mornings, a slush mid days.  And the variated surfaces in between.  It is easy to ride in those questionable days and being a little narrower, it also sails through wet slush.

When its January, the snow is good (ice crystals or power) I take the Contra.  This thing chews up everything.  It digs in hard, turns more than i thought i could, and exits out a slow speeds.  I can almost step out of my rear binding at exit speed, it turns that darn well.  When i can make 3 turns between lift poles with the nirvana, i can make 4 turns with the contra.

So, my love affair with coilers continues.  I seem to be improving more and more.  But so far, each has a different purpose and a reason to take it over the others.  The nirvana is 6 yrs old, and the contra just 3 months.  I dont want to part with either of them any time soon.  But the contra has made me a better rider.
