barryj Posted April 4, 2014 Report Posted April 4, 2014 Two of my favorite runs, Sherwod Lift at Alpine Meadows is shut down for the season...well it was really never open that much this season anyway.....and Squaw Creek Lift at Squaw is shut down also.....so thinking of driving down to South Lake to Heavenly or Kirkwood this Sat........anybody recommend one over the other? .......for better grooming?....better wide open runs?......less traffic to dodge on the trail? Ladia Posted April 4, 2014 Report Posted April 4, 2014 Kwood. The best snow condition around Tahoe. Quote
barryj Posted April 4, 2014 Author Report Posted April 4, 2014 Hey Ladia,Thanks for the info. I'd been to Kwood, but late in the season and it was mush by 10:30. Never been to Heavenly.Looking for big, wide open Blue groomers Quote
ExcelsiorTheFathead Posted April 4, 2014 Report Posted April 4, 2014 I haven't been to Tahoe this season, so I have no idea about conditions. The most fun I ever had at Kirkwood was the Elevator Shaft run. There's good stuff at Heavenly, but the lower runs can get really mushy in April. I like High Five on the CA side and the high up stuff on the NV side. Quote
barryj Posted April 4, 2014 Author Report Posted April 4, 2014 Hey Ex - Thanks for that info - I'll check out Elevator Shaft off Sunrise! Quote
avante Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 spotted two hardbooters in Heavenly on Saturday and five more in Kirkwood on Sunday - this is more than I've seen through the whole season :) Quote
barryj Posted April 8, 2014 Author Report Posted April 8, 2014 Avante - I was at Kirkwood Sat. I thougt the conditions/grooming was Fab!........but had a hard time finding the perfect consistant pitch blue groomer for me. Elevator shaft was great, but lots of rollers in general at Kirkwood I thought. How would you compare your experience at Heavenly? Trails you'd recomend for consistant easy blue's? Quote
Randy T. Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 Barry, Buckboard run off of chair 11 is a great carving run at Kirkwood. Check that out next time you go. Quote
barryj Posted April 8, 2014 Author Report Posted April 8, 2014 Buckboard - Yeah your right. I liked that but it got crowded half way down as it funnels down to the main lodge Quote

Zachary was perfect in the morning, though it is black not blue. Saturday at Heavenly was almost perfect: winter (cold, but still soft) snow conditions almost all day long, grooming and not so crowded as usual. I would recommend High Five, Ridge Run, Big Dipper, Orion and Comet. Normally, during the season it is getting crowded almost everywhere by 11-12, but I usually manage to find the least crowded trail. Quote
barryj Posted April 8, 2014 Author Report Posted April 8, 2014 Avante - Are those runs on the CA or NV side?? Do you like one side better? Quote
avante Posted April 8, 2014 Report Posted April 8, 2014 High Five and Ridge Run on the CA side and Big Dipper, Orion and Comet on the NV. I like both sides and try to move around the mountain to find the best conditions at the moment. Quote
barryj Posted April 9, 2014 Author Report Posted April 9, 2014 Cool - Thanks for that info. How was the snowpack and the grooming at Heavenly compared to your day at Kirkwood? Quote
