Burton MGX

So I came across an old pair of these. They are in great shape and wow, they are super stiff! I am very impressed at how good these old boots are, and they are super light! I cannot believe it but I am considering to put some heat Moldavia liners and make this an awesome set of boots.

Any one else have though on this old stock?

I never owned a pair of these but came up with a pair. I added newer liners to them.

Rode again last night and wow. They are so stiff. I mean the power transfer is great! Not as comfortable as my garmont boots, but they are really interesting. I cannot believe an old boot that is 20+ years old still can deliver. Also they are very light as well.

Kind of a cool retro discovery

I had a pair of those back in 90, 91 or 92 and loved them (stiff). The liner was not good for the shape of my foot, but I never changed it out. I have actually been keeping an eye out for another pair to test like you are. Glad you like them. And yes, they were very lite weight.

How do the MGX's compare to modern boots from Deeluxe, Head, UPZ? I have been riding with MGX's on the few days I'm out carving on my ancient carving gear but I am finally upgrading. Any reason to upgrade from MGX's?

If anyone comes accross a 9.5 or 10, I am looking for a pair. LambertoMI has me motivated to test them against my current boots (Deeluxe Indy/orange). Also, anyone has a pair of the "Deeluxe Indy (orange or red) in a 27.0/27.5, I am looking for another pair for backups.

Create a search string on your ebay account with email updates. You won't have to wait very long. I see them frequently.

I think it is safe to say the EU = 8 is more likely a UK size by today's "Shoe Speak"

It has been nearly 20 years since I road the MGX. So my memory of their flex and ability to compare them is less than good. I would think they would be softer and obviously they do not provide the DIN heel perch for step ins. They did not have a conformable liner but they went really well with my BURTON Vari-plates, M6 and Lib Tech Innercourse :)

I have read that burton wind boots are relatively the same stiffness as the newer boots. Having owned several wind and reactor boots, I was always happy with the stiffness. I think these are as stiff as my reactors ever were. Without the mechanisms for forward lean, the boots are much lighter as well. The liners were cold and difficult, but my newer liners have improved this a lot.

Not sure I would say these are as good as new boots, but I am surprised at how good they deliver the power to the edge. Needless to say I am impressed that 20 year old boots can still deliver. Mine are listed as a euro 8 and felt like a 8.5. With the molded liners they are close to a 9 now. Kinda cool vintage....

Just called Salty Peaks in Utah, as they have a size 10 Burton Megaflex available (used). They are asking $224.95 on their website. I called and asked about a lower price and was told that the owner probably would not lower the price, but would rather keep them and put them in the museum if they don't sell for that price. Moral of the story here is; "do not call them about alpine equipment and a better price." Not going to happen! Side note: The girl that helped me was very, very nice and super happy to answer my questions! Nice to see there is good help out there!!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

If you take a look at the Full Tilt ski boot, that's essentially a 20+ year old boot with new colours and a new liner. Many of the Raichle models are also quite long in the tooth on the deeluxe side.

Actually, I have an old pair of UPZ boots called a Mach Z (I think) if I can figure out where they are, that I never wore; lent out a couple of times but didnt' actually use as I was still in my ski boot phase.

Now thinking as a softer alternative with better heel hold than the indys I have now (admittedly running race tongues and poked liners) I might have to locate and give them a go. Still a 4 buckle + strap boot though (from what I remember in 1997/8 when I got them) but they looked really cool. Which is like, 85% of the reason to use something.

e.g. why do I date this girl...because she looks cool

e.g. why do a watch that TV show....so I can appear cool

e.g. why do a put ice on my sore knee...so my knee will be cool

Yeah these boots had great hold down heels. The liners were very good for that. I cannot use these liners on my boots as the are a touch too small.

I have been looking into a few other boots as well, but I am not sure about the new flex standards for new boots

After a few rides the boots broke in to my flex pattern riding. These are getting to be a very nice set of boots
