skategoat
Looks like I'll be in Southern California in late January on business. I'd like to extend the trip and squeeze in a day or two at Mammoth. How does one get from LA to Mammoth? Is rental car the best option or is there any kind of bus service? How about a flights? Are there any reasonably priced flights into Mammoth from Orange County or LA? Thanks, Henry
Ray
Hello Henry, I think he best way would be to rent a car and drive up to MM. Should take you about 4.5 from LAX. http://www.mammothmountain.com/plan/getting_here/ Have fun!
nekdut
Hi Henry, Like ray said, renting a car is your best bet. The nearest commercial airport with regularly scheduled flights is Reno and that puts you about 160 miles north of Mammoth Lakes. It would also make more sense to head to Tahoe if you fly into Reno. Driving to MM is an easy drive once you get past LA traffic. 5n 14n 395n Exit Hwy 203 Mammoth lakes Make a left
gawdzira
Tips on driving to Mammoth. First of all, it is possible to drive from LAX to Mammoth in 4.5 hours, I have done it in less. My brother, who rode shotgun on that trip has still not recovered from the psycological damage. You need to hit triple digits on the speedometer to make it in that time and we are not talking about kmh. The first leg of the trip out of L.A. will probably be up the 405. On Fridays from 3-7pm the 405 is a parking lot. If you leave during those hours you can add 30-120 minutes to your trip. Between L.A. and Mammoth there is only fast food. Stay in L.A. and have a nice light dinner and leave at 7pm from the Santa Monica area. If you are going to eat fast food, 100 miles outside of L.A. is the fast food mecca, Mojave. Bon apetite. The drive up is really easy because it is only in the last hour of the trip where you do you major elevation gain. If it is snowing, you only have snow for the last 40 miles or so. The last town before Mammoth is Bishop. If you are solo, try and get a hotel room in Mammoth for Saturday night but stay in Bishop Friday night. It is cheaper and you will only have about an hour more of driving in the morning. There are several little towns in the ride out where the speen limit drops fast. 45, 35, 25. Don't speed in those towns. Speed on the parts where the speed limit goes back up to 55+ (although I can't advocate speeding, see above)
skategoat
Great advice guys, thanks. Is the elevation going to affect me? I live at close to sea level. Are there any hard booters who want to car pool on Jan. 21?
nekdut
Its pretty high up there. I'm usually at sea level too and the town is around 7000-8000ft up (mtn is 8000-11053ft). I usually do get a bit of altitude jitters and insomnia the first night or two, so keep that in mind. I should be heading up the same weekend as you. I'll know more details as it approaches. Guest Randy S.
Apparently mountain climbers have started taking Viagra as an antidote for altitude sickness. Something to think about, especially with all the hot LA chicks who show up at MM. If you do decide to eat fast food on your route, make sure you try In 'n Out Burger. You must try it at least once when you re in California. They don't have it elsewhere and its the best fast food anywhere. Have a great trip. Mammoth is a fun place. gawdzira
Be warned, there is no In and Out Burger in Mojave. I can't remember the exit that you must take for that but it is way before Mojave. I am heading up this weekend and I will try and map it out for you. Guest thefishinmagician
In-N-Out can be found just east of the 14 Fwy on Palmdale Boulevard or on Avenue I in Lancaster. Definitely worth a stop! :D ~Adam~
D-Sub
get it right, man! thats the most imoportant part!!!! as for altitude...Coq10 helps immensely but you should take it I think 7 days ahead Ginger helps settle the stomach and valerian or kava kava help with the insomnia. Last time I was in mammoth I used a combination of CoQ10, Kava and ginger (I sometimes get a little nausesous) and I felt 90% better! gawdzira
I almost forgot to mention, the tap water in Mammoth is some of the best tasting water in the world. Bring a big bottle for the ride ride home.
