boarderboy Posted October 15, 2009 Report Posted October 15, 2009 Record Red Oak acorn crop this fall, cause it takes two years for the Reds to develop and mature their seed. Hence, those "bombs" popping on our tin roof are from two summers ago when ... We had probably the worst Carolina drought on record, and the stressed oaks, being strong survivors, used all their energy to ensure the continuation of the species. (Was so dry our down-cast swamplands had forest fires that bored into the peat, lasting for months and smoky months...) Back up here in the piedmont, the whitetails, too, are happy, 'cause they like the red oak acorns more than the white oak seeds which, apparently, are bitter. So much for southern trivia... BB Quote
