scrutton Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 I want to purchase a set of tuning vices this year to hold the board vertically so I can put an edge on my boards. Does anyone have a suggestion for a set that will hold an alpine board? The Burton Tuning Vices look like a good solution, but I'm wondering if they can hold a thick Alpine board like a Prior Custom. Thanks, Paul Quote
Puddy Tat Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 I generally do it after a couple of margaritas while wearing a french maid outfit... ah wrong vice... I see you meant vise I have a set of swix snowboard vises see link http://www.spadout.com/p/swix-snowboard-vise/ The top allows you to clamp the board when it is in a vertical position (on edge). Alternately you can narrow and widen the top for when the board is horizontal depending on whether you are tuning a Virus or a Coiler monster. Cheers, Dave Quote
bobdea Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 yeah, those swix vises are pretty nice there's lots of good ones out there though. toko makes the vises that I want, http://tognar.com/vises_benches_tuning_waxing_ski_snowboard.html#TOK-4268 if you get them please give a report! Mike T Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 I have a set of swix snowboard vises see link http://www.spadout.com/p/swix-snowboard-vise/ I've got these as well, courtesy of the SES '06 raffle. Love 'em. Quote
D.T. Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 toko makes the vises that I want, http://tognar.com/vises_benches_tuning_waxing_ski_snowboard.html#TOK-4268if you get them please give a report! I have the Toko Pro vises and have no complaints about the function. The jaws are adjustable, making it easy to support a narrow or wide board lying flat on top. The clamping mechanism for holding the board on edge does a great job locking the board in place. My only complaint is that the vises are tall. When I attach the vises to a 36" tall workbench, the board sits higher than I would prefer. Quote
inkaholic Posted September 15, 2009 Report Posted September 15, 2009 My only complaint is that the vises are tall. When I attach the vises to a 36" tall workbench, the board sits higher than I would prefer. Maybe you should wear your platform shoes to go with your skirt when tuning. At least you would be 6" taller and the vises wouldn't be the problem, only the metal shavings on your skirt. :) I have a similar vise as the Toko Pro minus the Pro part. No adjustable width or slot. On thicker boards I need to have a longer table to space the vises out enough that a thinner cross section of the board can slide down into the slot. Other than that I have no complaints. Ink Quote
skidad62 Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 Toko World Cup vices here too - works great! Quote
Surf Quebec Posted September 16, 2009 Report Posted September 16, 2009 This is what I used, pretty easy and cheap to make. I do fix the homemade vice to the table using typical claws. Quote
Softcarver Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 I was looking at getting this vise. It seems convenient in that you don't need a table and can bring it anywhere. The only thing I would be concerned with is the sturdiness. Has anyone used this one before? Other than this one the Toko ones look pretty sweet. http://www.reliableracing.com/detail.cfm?edp=11148442 Quote
Surf Quebec Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 Nice, I'm interested in those. We'll get a new table and my wife won't let me use the kitchen table anymore. Quote

You will have a ton of overhang on the ends with longer boards, and this annoys me when brushing/scraping... You have to slide the board back and fourth so you don't have the board swinging up on ya.... With the Toko or Swix vices, you can simply slide them to whatever length you need.... Quote
Softcarver Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 Good point. It is adjustable from 28" - 38" so if you don't mind different heights the 28" height should give you wider contact points while the 38" would give you the narrowest. I wish the swix site had some specs on it. to know for sure what those were. The one thing that really makes me question it is the fact that only one side has a screw down holder so like you said the one end may come up. Quote
Softcarver Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 http://www.reliableracing.com/detail.cfm?edp=11148442 So, I just recieved this tuning table in the mail. I am very dissapointed. First, no matter where I adjust the legs they hit the bindings on all four of my boards. Next, when I adjust it to miss the bindings the board has so much overhang that it wants to tip. I tried tying down the one end from the binding below and now the whole table tips slightly with hard pressure. This means that the bindings must come off every time, but even then the table is not that sturdy. Furthermore the clamp to hold the board on edge is only on the one side so the other tips up. I would think that a large company like swix would have designed a better table. At least make it wider so it's atable and does not hit normal binding stances. Quote
scrutton Posted November 17, 2009 Author Report Posted November 17, 2009 Yeah, the other two tables that Swix makes look much nicer. Of course, you do need vises for them. I just attended a tuning clinic, and got to see the other two tables (narrow and wide ones). These with a set of vices hold a ski extremely solidly. There are a number of manf's that make much more pricey tables also. I think that I may spring for the wide Swix at some point. Vises first though... Quote
pokkis Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 Check this, it has no problem relates you listed and it works like charm. http://www.tooltonic.com/xFlat.asp I'm carrying mine on car trunk when i go for boarding incase if i need to tune edges or change bindings, and never had any problems. That works like any other tool they provide Quote
queequeg Posted November 17, 2009 Report Posted November 17, 2009 I really want to get a pair of vices, but I have yet to find anything that works for my situation. I live in an itty-bitty NYC apartment, and don't want to buy anything big (space) and don't really have an appropriate table upon which to clamp a pair of vices. I like the idea of two vices that are designed to sit flat on the floor with some kind of large rubber paded foot to hold everything still. I may have to just build something. Quote

It's sturdier, has a very similar concept and even has an iron holder built in. I'll post pics if I go for it. Quote
