I was kiting with Jeff Kafka here in UT right before the event. He was so stoked to go to Mavricks. It was sick to hear his account of kiting mavricks in Oct. It was crazy that the guys in OR where going to host a strap towin contest at the same time as the mavricks gig. It how every got canceled so mavricks could take priority. I think Jeff just pulled water rescue duty. Its Crazy to hear about all the saftey stuff that goes down for all the surfers. Almost makes the contest seem safe!!

poleboard masts are 15' ish depending on sail size......430 for a 5.0 ,just do the math

good link tho

you poleboard photodad ? It's been CANX for most of us:rolleyes:

I'm assuming they've got some strong winds and are probably on 4.0's - 4.5's which take 370 / 400 masts.

Yeah, I just started a little while back. Since I started in the fall of 06' I'm just into my second year. I've got an old Mistral Comp. Good for the inconsistant winds we have around here. I've got a 5.8 and a 7.4 Hood River Sails. I also have a 3.2 Gaastra training sail that I used the first 2 times out and haven't used it since. For the 7.4 I sail it on a 490 mast. I can beachstart in water a little over waist deep. My goal this year is to get down waterstarts. I can do some oldschool freestyle, light wind moves like heli-tacks, pivot-jibes, duck-jibes (I think maybe 2 or 3 really shaky ones), I love to plane when we get the wind for it. I went 2-3 times a week last Spring through Fall and had some really experienced sailors coaching me and giving me tips. One guy actually gave me a boom because I was using and old tie-on. Cool group of guys.

all I can say is...put all that effort and cash into buying some kites. as a windsurfer for over 20 years, I can attest that you'll have way more fun on a kite.

but, your choice...many still cling to the old ways....

I'd like to do both. When it comes to board sports I have no loyalties one over another. Problem with kites around here are there's a lot of trees around the shores of lakes, not to mention the occational power line! Makes getting in and out tricky. There is a windsurfer around here that does both, but again, the wind we get is more suitable for oldschool windsurfing. We do have lots of empty fields though, if we ever get enough snow, I'd like to try using a kite with my snowboards.

where are you daddio? I gotta admit, when it blows over 40 and kiting turns super sketchy, it still feels good to rip around on my old F2 Axxess wave board on a 4.0 sail. rare, but I can still gybe a bit, jump and water start no prob.I've got a 7 meter Best yarga and it's SO hyper in mega wind, riding a tiny board.

have fun out there !

I'm in Ohio. We get plenty of wind in the winter but we average 5-10 in the summer months. We do get 10-20 sometimes, and we watch the weather channel for stormfronts. The best place in Ohio is up north in bays around Lake Erie, but that's a 4 hour drive as I'm south western Ohio. I go to a much smaller lake that about a mile across in length and about a quarter mile across in width. There's another lake that about an hour drive that's bigger but there's usually a lot of motor craft and they've been known to be a bit careless out there. The group of sailors I was telling you about take a bi-yearly trip to OBX once in the spring and again in the fall.

I used to wakeboard but lost the boat in the divorce.:(

It wasn't an actual "wakeboarding" boat, just a family cruiser. It was an 18ft. Glastron openbow with a 75hp outboard Johnson. I found out if I brought more than 2 friends it was difficult getting out of the hole. And that was 50lbs. ago!!! Didn't have a tower or pylon either. I'm the only one that ever boarded behind it, mostly used it for pulling a tube and fishing.

Just a notice for anyone on this forum (I was unaware this forum existed till now) if you see a hill, or hear about a hill... Don't ride it without contacting a local first. We have plenty of problems with cops on GMR and other hills as professionals who wear professional safety gear and race the circuit. We were pulled over this past sunday for skating up there. And it's no wonder we get complaints from local cyclists and riders about idiots carving the road at 20 mph. So keep one thing in mind before you bomb a road that you cant claim your a regular at(It pisses me of that when I see people on silverfishlongboarding who have GMR in the screen name who I have never seen or heard of and I have been riding up there for almost two years). Talk to someone who can claim there a regular. Most of the time there happy to show you I've had people contact me through the website or even youtube and I have showed them around. Be respectful don't ruin it for people who work hard at holding on to even a glimpse of respect in these locations.

Thank's,

Nick Meehan

Is ok I just posted your video here because it was so well done and quite frankly it looked cool. I understand you cautions and I'm pretty sure most of the people here do as well.

Something I found today not as well done but still cool
