Bobby Buggs Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 Considering a new Coiler Am21 width and currently ride a 19 is there that much of a difference. I ask because I see people writing about the tough time they have with wider boards. not sure the jump from 19 to 21 is enough to worry about. Any one been there done this?? Quote
pokkis Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 Last year total jump from 19 to 21 was easier task than this year from 21 to 23 :D But it does not take many days to get comfy to position, specially if you dont straight go to toughest places. Now it feels silly to ride 65+ angles, i can still do it but now wider board feels more comfy. Quote

If yours is going to be a Titanal then I would say go for the 21 or 21.5 without hesitation. If it's going to be standard construction then you might notice. When comparing two AM 172/21.5w/12scr, one standard and one titanal, I was amazed at how the T deck literally felt narrower on hardpack. It just jumped up on edge. Unless you're gonna be riding mainly soft groom, or taking it someplace where there's a lot of danger of rock damage, the T is IMHO more than worth it. Quote
Mr. T Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 It will be a bit slower edge to edge but if you are riding it as an all mountain board, off grommers that is, I would think the wider waist would let you run shallower angles and have more float in powder and crud like conditions. I have size 12 feet so waist width can be a limiting factor for me. I have become accustom to a 19 width on race boards but prefer 21 and wider on all mountains. My go to all mountain (pow day) board is a prior ATV which has a 23.5 cm width, which was not so much an issue of getting used to but just a plain different riding style. Float vs. carve. I don't think you will have a hard time adapting to a two cm. difference but you will notice it and your stance will probably feel odd for the first couple runs. Quote
JoelP Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 Hi Bobby, To each their own so I'll give you my experience. I went from 18.5 and 19 to an AllMtn with a 21. It worked great for goofing around, was super comfortable on cat walks and easy terrain felt awesome on powder days. I have smallish feet, 26, so I was able to relax my stance a bit. But when it came to hard charging carving, my knees were not happy campers. I've got bad knees from to many operations to begin with but no matter what I tried to do things just didn't work well for hard carving for me. I sold my AllMtn and may replace it after I get and try my Stubby, but I'll knock it down to either a 19.5 or 20. I liked the wider board for AllMtn stability as you end up in some ugly terrain now and then and just standing on a bit wider board feels good and not so tippy but 21 was definetly to wide for me even when I set my bindings back the way my legs liked then the board was a bit awkward feeling when doing crossunders. So for now it's either a Race board or my powder board. I only do allmtn & bumps when it's a powder day anyway. Makes life easier.. Hope all is well, see you at SES? Joel Quote
D.T. Posted December 27, 2007 Report Posted December 27, 2007 Big difference between 19 and 21 waist?? Considering a new Coiler Am21 width and currently ride a 19 is there that much of a difference. I ask because I see people writing about the tough time they have with wider boards. not sure the jump from 19 to 21 is enough to worry about. Any one been there done this?? Depends on how you intend to use the board. I have a 177 AM with 21cm waist. I did that because I have plenty of narrow waisted boards and I wanted something that would better float my 210lb a$$ when I divert into the soft stuff. Granted, because of my weight, I needed a more width but did not want to go all the way to a 23cm waist. Obviously, the wider waist will be a little slower edge-to-edge, but no, it is not that dramatic and I highly doubt you would be disappointed. IMO, look at you quiver and determine which waist width would best compliment what you currently have or plan to buy. I made the mistake of having three boards in the quiver that were too similar. Two of those are gone and have now been replaced. Quote

Bobby, with your current circumstances, this is something only you can answer. If you make it to SES, you can take my 21cm 177AM for a spin, granted it may be a bit stiff for you. Dustin Quote
terekhov Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 I ride ~19 (mix of coilers and volants) at 63-60 on grooms and 21.5 (axis182) anywhere offpiste at 54-48. transition 19<->21.5 is always in 2-3 liftrides to regain alignment. not any other problems - I love both angles almost equally, but the transitions is not so seamless, so you decide PS also regularly use 45-30 on softies (f2 elim.ltd) and 55-35 on swallowtails (rossi198 & pogo183). 55-35 is not a usual snowboard stance - surf-pureboarding style Quote
Pow Posted December 28, 2007 Report Posted December 28, 2007 I need the nimbleness of a narrow waist, otherwise i wind up in the woods at the end of an edge change. mines 19cm and i wouldn't want it any wider in normal conditions. My big wide Longboard is nice in powder, but can be downright dangerous sometimes on the hills i ride. Quote
MUD Posted December 29, 2007 Report Posted December 29, 2007 I got an Axxess Nyberg with a 22.5 waist. My main ride up until this point has been my FCII 179 with a 19.5 waist. I have been riding my AX so far this year until the snow gets sorted, last weekend I took out the FC, after about 10 runs (MN has short runs), I put it in the van and rode my AX. I just like it better, the transition is not the issue, I just LIKE the lower angles. To get more to your point, I don't find it a big deal going between 19.5 and 22.5. Quote
