Koci is in the NHL for only one reason and he should know better than to wake up the beast that is Chara. 6'9", works out 8 hours a day, rides Tour de France mountain stages for fun and trains with Olympic wrestlers in the off-season.

It's just blood, it'll scrape right off the ice.

this is what hockey has been missing for a few years... they tried to clean it up and make it all nice and sweet and stuff but this is what people want to see when the going gets tough... buckets of blood!

my dad tells the stories of bench clearing fights between the B's and the Habs... crazy stuff

I don't know about that. I miss the early 80s with creative, high flying offenses and Wayne at his peak. The two most popular players in the league now are Crosby and Ovechkin. The NHL holds them up as poster boys but neither one of them are nice or sweet. Ovechkin bangs hard and Crosby has a mean streak.

There is certainly the element who watches hockey just for the flghts, but they are the same types who watch auto racing for the crashes. But these fans are the minority. Most appreciate the offensive artistry, the fluidity of the game, the speed and the hard hitting. Physical play doesn't have to end in blood. I don't like seeing any player get hurt. Seeing Koci's face explode like that makes me feel sick.

As for the Habs and Bruins, look up Stan Jonathan vs. Pierre Bouchard.

I'll never forget the days of John Wensink, Terry O'Reilly and Stan Jonathon on the Bruins.

I was at this game. I'll never forget Wensink challenging the entire Northstar bench:

This one too. It was a classic, all 4 goalies fight each other!

Here's another I saw live that I'll never forget. Its hard to see, but Stan Jonathan accidentally catches the ref with a left elbow when the ref first tries to break up the fight. The announcers get it wrong, that's the ref's blood on his own face, not Bouchard's. Bouchard's blood is on the ice making an extra red circle. As I recall, this was a playoff game. Not sure why Wensink and Jonathan were on the ice at the same time in a playoff, unless they were trying to start a fight.

Aisling wanted bench-clearing Bruins Habs. This one is amazing. I wasn't at this game. It has everything. Players, benches, coaches, refs, fans, etc. You know its going to be a fight in the first few seconds of the clip when you hear Jay Miller's name mentioned. He probably had the highest penalty minute to ice time ratio of any Bruin ever.

Guys, guys, guys...the brawl to end all brawls was the Easter Brawl between the Canadiens and Nordiques in 1984 (I think).

This was already a bitter rivalry with the upstart Nordiques on the rise and threatening the Hab's God-given, Quebec hockey supremacy. These teams hated each other. There were no beers after the game, no golf games in the off-season for these two teams. And the Easter game was when it blew wide open.

To recap (from my fuzzy memory):

Nords Louis Sleigher sucker punched Habs Jean Hamel in the temple near the end of the second period. Hamel is lieing on the ice, unconscious, bleeding from the ears.

The Canadien's go nuts with Mario Tremblay out for blood. The benches empty. Even normally peaceful players are swinging. I recall Peter Stastny going absolutely crazy.

With sanity restored, about 8-10 players are given game misconducts and they break for the second intermission.

They come back out for the third period warm-up and all the previously ejected players are on the ice. The Habs go after Sleigher again. No need to empty the benches this time because the period hadn't even started.

This main event features the Hunter Brothers fighting each other. Goalie fight featuring the backup goalies (Clink Malarchuk was one, I think) is added to the undercard.

Jean Hamel never played another NHL game and I think Bruce Hood (the ref) retired after this game.

Forgot about this one. Mid-80s, Habs-Flyers playoff game. Ed Hospodar (useless goon if I ever saw one) takes exception with Claude Lemiex's habit of shooting a puck into the opposition net during warm-ups. The benches don't empty - the dressing rooms do. Doug Crossman comes out with his shower slippers on.

Check out all the mullets.

Sinecure, that Isles/Bruins brawl is a beauty. First time I've seen that. Loved the way Cashman came back on Howatt. Cash was one tough dude.
