Lowell Hart
As there are many on BOL who have been snowboarding for a long time, I was wondering if anyone might have an old issue of Absolutely Radical or ISM handy for a project I'm working on. What I am specifically looking for is the short list of "areas that allow snowboarding" circa 1984/1985. Thanks for any help you might be able to provide. Cheers, LH
carvedog
Hey Lowell. My ISMs go back to about 87 and I only have a few. Nice sequence of Jeff. I was at a couple of the Annual Congress meetings and Jeff was at the one in Denver I think. We didn't get to ride together but had a couple of good BS sessions and maybe a misguided trip to a "club" downtown that will remain nameless. Do you still AASI? Your name is familiar (maybe from the manual) but I don't remember if we met. Travis Thelen is still here in Sun Valley. Not sure but I think he may be teaching againg this year. www.oldsnowboards.com
Hi Lowell, please contact me directly. I have a copy, however it is currently archived. PS I am offering a 50-100$ a copy depending on conditions. They are newspaper print and quite rare. Typically brittle and yellowed FYI , considered by many collectors to be the "First" snowboarding mag. It was renamed after the one and only issue called "Absolutely Radical". Thanks, Bryan
Neil Gendzwill
Don't have any of the really old ISMs but IIRC at that time in Canada there was only one major resort allowing snowboarding - Sunshine.
tex1230
In the US in '84, the only places I remember allowing us were Wolf Creek, CO, Suicide Six, VT, and I think Heavenly (but just the NV side) I'm sure there were others, but I'm old and my memory is not that good

He's a talented rider and one of Vail's more experienced teachers. He's done good work--a lot of it under the radar--for AASI/ASEA. Do you still AASI?I still do occasional work for AASI and help with various projects. But I'd rather be out hiking and riding powder. Thanks for your help, LH

Guest
Wow, I didn't realize Buttermilk was one of the first to allow snowboarding. Kinda cool...
Erik J
That cover shot and resort list is really cool. Made me think of the old Eastern Edge mags (also newspaper-ish) - started '89 or so?

Made me think of the old Eastern Edge mags (also newspaper-ish) - started '89 or so? Keith K. was an early competitor and all around great guy. He was at the Donner Legends and I was fortunate to meet him and his young family. He actually grew his heavy beard back for the event. He looked almost exactly like he did in the photo above. I believe he said his family had not seen his beard before this. Yes, "Eastern Edge" is indeed a very cool oldsnowboard mag, full of good stories, photos and info. Lowell Hart
Here you go! Was your ski area an early friend to snowboarding? Thanks Bryan! Jay Peak, where I was riding in '84 (as well as hiking/poaching at Stowe), didn't make the Absolutely Radical list. Jay was an early adopter and a great place to ride. Lowell, Hey, come by the shop, I have a crate filled with old ISM issues.
