Ais,

if your guy really wants a lesson, look up my buddy Seb at little overhead surfshop in eastham. Surfing isn't that hard, tho. It's paddle paddle paddle and try to stand up.It only takes a few hundred tries before you catch on.

Nantasket Beach is a great slow fat wave to learn on. First Beach in Newport is a good beginner spot too. Just keep an eye on the marine forecast and get a list of shops with daily surf reports.New England doesn't have the consistant surf that Hawaii has but you can find some Waikiki type stuff if you're willing to drive a few hours.

Kitesurfing is way more fun and actually easier to get good at. Plus, the wind blows all the time, waves are sporadic.

I just blew the dust off my Bear 9'2" big gun and haven't paddled for surf in years. It's like cross country skiing after ripping down the hill on your favorite carving board.

Dano don't surf but he's pretty good at the windsurfing. ;)

Cinnamon Rainbow at the Wall on Hampton Beach, NH and Pioneers Board Shop also in Hampton, NH are about the best surf shops that I've come across. Little Overhead Surf Shop in Eastham, MA down on the Cape is also worth a look at, and they offer lessons. Cinnamon Rainbow does offer lessons. www.nesurf.com is a good site to check out, as is www.cinnamonrainbows.com. I also like www.surfline.com to check out farther reaching surf reports, basically around the world!

Good luck and happy surfing!

Give them a call, those Bic boards don't ding like glass boards and they're super easy to learn on.

In Narragansett RI there is a shop called Gansett Juice. They have several people who teach lessons during the summer.. Owned by a legendary surfer guy called Peter Pan, who also is a snowboarder/instructor over at Rhode Islands only downhill ski resort..The name of which escapes me right now...

In other news, I'll be headed to the shoreline monday looking for leftovers with the longboard, won't know until sunday night where I'll end up, somewhere between Maine and Rhode Island...

Lookin for any instruction out here in NE. He'll only have just learned this week and next week so he will need some more help before paddling out on his own. thanks guys!

Where is the boyfriend starting his drive from? I can probably recommend the closest beach...

Hey Willy, I thought you only did stand-up paddle surfing? ( Geek! )

I learned to longboard surf up in Ogunquit Maine and the Wall in NH back in the 80's but the cold water and long time between good waves made it seem like a waste of time compared to windsurfing... which has loads more instant gratification....

Boston's pretty central...good for any direction.

for closeness, Good harbor is pretty close and hassle free. Good place to watch others and learn but it's not maui. BRRRRRRRR! The Wall is pretty close too ( but crowded) and it gives you an idea of what to expect surfing around here.

I knew this crazy-good surfer from Cali, and he said the best waves in NE were at 1st and 2nd beach in RI. ( he got fed up and went back to Cali )

I never surfed there but I did nearby at Horseneck Beach MA on a big day and it kicked my butt over the falls like you read about.

we are both in boston :) i want to try kitesurfing, i've seen that around here and it looks sooo fun!!!

Ais,

You 2 should invest in 4/3 wetsuits and 5 mill booties and learn to surf together this fall.

The great thing about the crappy NE surf is that you can still learn to stand up in the constant closeout waves. Nothing like heading out for dawn patrol and paddling out as the sun comes up. "Surfing's the source; it'll change your life"

I learned to surf here in RI (1st beach actually)....then I moved to Socal where the winter water is warmer than the summer water here....that was the beginning of the end for me and New England Surfing. However it was the 4 years in Hawaii that sealed it though...waves here are just to mushy and the water too cold for it to be any fun. There is the reason that the Peter Pan Slug is so popular here in the Northeast it's because the waves have no power....no paddle takeoffs Rice Bowl beat paddling like hell at Ruggles regardless of the temperature. Maybe after I retire Kitesurfing could be an option but regular surfing has lost it's appeal now that I have been to the holy land...

aaaaaannnndddddd........We're gonna expect to see you and your boyfriend in hardboots tearing it up this winter  no excuses !

he said he was crap on a snowboard but he skis. i told him i could try to help or any number of our great BOL people would surely help him get better on a board :)
