Carp Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 What's the riding like up in Alaska? I've got a job opportunity up there with my existing company and want to know if there's riding nearby and if not, how long a drive it would be to get some good riding in. Anything else to do up there? It seems pretty remote... Quote
RDY_2_Carve Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Best fishing and hunting in the US. I lived there when I was really little...1st through 4th grade. We try to go back every 5 years in the summer and hit the King/Red Salmon seasons. The state bird is the mosquito... You might even be able to ski year round? Quote
svr Posted January 24, 2007 Report Posted January 24, 2007 Alyeska is the closest resort (about 45 minutes away in Girdwood). The mountains are great and backcountry is awesome. p.s. it is Anchorage, AK (not AL) http://www.alyeskaresort.com/page.asp?intnodeid=10805 Quote
crucible Posted January 25, 2007 Report Posted January 25, 2007 Aleyska ROCKs, as well as Thompson Pass, the home of the best coastal heli-skiing ever. Alaskans are the most "live-and-let-live" people on the planet- there are a minimum of rules and regulations, and the scale of the mountains are huge. The flip side of course, is that you're on your own when it comes to self-reliance - When I went into the Alaskan backcountry, the rangers were blunt enough to tell us, "Don't expect any rescues- we promise to recover your bodies in the Spring"....
