  5. A recent editorial argued that something can't be a "right" if it means taking from someone else. For example someone needs healthcare and if healthcare is a "right" this person can hold the doctor and the pharmacist criminally liable if treatment isn't provided. Essentially the same thing is the scenario of redistribution where an individual's assets are seized via taxes to pay for the alleged healthcare "right" of others.
  6. "For the first time in my adult life, I'm proud of Massachusetts." Hopefully everyone got that as a paraphrase & parody of Michelle Obama's comment. I've spent some time in MA, love the state, love the people. Certainly Coakley ran a weak race. But in MA registered Democrats outnumber Republicans 3 to 1 and in the presidential election Obama carried the state by 26 points so with all things being equal you'd think the dems would of won even with Coakley running a poor campaign. Unless there are other reasons. There seems to be a trend here with Democrats losing New Jersey and Virginia too. Thanks for the feedback.

  13. Important criteria: • cannot be a big city; must be a small-to-mid-sized town • cost of living must be reasonable (meaning you could live comfortably on $30K-40K annually) • town must include at least one good coffeehouse and one good bookstore • broadband Internet access must be available Mandatory criteria—must be 30mins or less from the following: • at least one good whitewater river • at least one good carving resort • mountains at least 3,000' high • many miles of great bicycling/motorcycling roads in the area Scott, I believe that about anywhere in the Lake Tahoe region would meet your "mandatory criteria," and that certain areas could also meet your "important criteria." It's always exciting to find a new place to live so I know you're enjoying your research. Rob

  16. When you're riding & listening to tunes don't you miss hearing the love from the lift? That can be good stoke sometimes. :)
  17. carvediem, I cobbled together an Excel spreadsheet some years back (2003 I think) that calculates the theoretical G force using speed and sidecut radius as the input variables. I tried to upload it but got the message "invalid file." Drop me an email if you'd like a copy. FWIW, an example of the results per the spreadsheet: carving a board with a sidecut radius of 13 meters at 24.6 MPH results in 3 Gs with an edge angle of 71.4°. Always possible, probably even likely, that the SS contains errors! :) Rob
  18. Michelle, Sad to read about the loss of your gear. Please accept my gift of $100 to help you replace your boards. Let me know check or PayPal. Happy to help out, albeit in a small way. Rob
  19. I have a set. Not sure that I really want to part with them, but if you like, email me an offer. Rob
  20. Thanks everyone for the reports. Conditions sound a little sketch to risk the 14 hour (round trip) drive. I can do Mammoth/June as a day-trip so I may check that out next week instead. Will try Utah another time. Rob
  21. Hi, The snow situation is desperate at Tahoe, so, I'm thinking about driving to Salt Lake City next week and riding for 3 days. It'd be very much appreciated if locals could give me a heads-up on the current conditions. My interest is morning carving some blues but mostly black groomed runs. From this snow report it appears that are a few black groomers open at Snowbird. http://www.snowbird.com/ski_board/grooming.php I've never carved Utah so would welcome any advice, other mountains to consider, lodging, anything helpful. If the conditions are such that it's not worth the trip right now that would be useful to know. Thanks in advance, Rob
