  1. Ok, now that Scott chimed in on the Thirty two, I will too. I have the Focus BOA and was really looking for a stiff responsive boot. It really does the trick. They have a moldable liner. Also has a nice heel retention strap inside the boot (between the liner and boot), a great adjustable cinch strap at the front of the liner (most boots do now though), and a dual BOA system. You can independently adjust the tightness of the bottom of the boot and the top. And man can I get dialed in tightly. Was really skeptical about the wires of the BOA system and thought the system might break down, but after 2 seasons (25-30 full days each season) they are still going strong. The liner itself has packed out a little bit, but they are still my go to boots. In my opinion I can get just about as tight as my hard boots with a bit more comfort. I have a wide foot and the boot fits just fine. However, one quirky thing about the Thirty Two boots are that the outside of the boot runs a little big. For example, I wear size 8.5 (yeah yeah, I know what they say about guys with small feet - they wear small boots). I looked at buying a pair of Flow bindings that were supposed to fit boot sizes up to 9, but the Focus boot was a tad to big to fit into the binding. So just make sure you have a binding that will fit at least one size bigger.
  2. I have ridden with Camelbacks for several years. I make sure to just put WATER in them; no gatorade or anything else. When I'm done using it, I will typically blow the water out of the tube and turn the inner bladder inside out let it dry out. Never used cleaners (other than dish soap occasionally), never had any mold or anything else visible in the bladder. I'm sure someone is going to say that I am doing something wrong not cleaning it out with some kind of cleaner, but you wanted to hear some experiences, and so that's mine. :) In case you are worried about the tube freeze issue, when I'm on the slopes, I have just blown the water back through the tube into the bladder when I am finished drinking, and almost never have freeze issues, If there's no water in the tube, then there's no water to freeze! Again, I'm sure some anal-rentitive hygiene person will have something to say about that!
  3. Ok for those hardbooters looking at this, I have NOT given up on hardbooting - just like to have a softie setup sometimes. Anyway, I see that the highback on my bindings has an adjustable lateral (side-to-side) lean. I am not sure which direction that I should move the highback, towards the front of the board or the rear. In an ideal world, which way should my leg be leaning, forward or back, when making a heelside turn?
  4. As it's pretty close to us, a few friends of mine went a few weeks ago. Their assessment was if you don't like hitting terrain features it's not realy worth it. Definitely NOT carve-able. Mostly sliding turns. You have to wear long pants and sleves or you'll get some pretty bad "rug burn" when you fall. I know another person who broke their wrist, but that could quite possibly be user error. Been wanting to go myslef just haven't found time yet!

I would second ursle's post as far as where to look for gear. That's a good place and has cheaper prices than most others I've seen. I had the same experience as some of these guys (and gals) - bought the 661 padded shirt that I use now for downhill mountain biking. Boy was it bulky! My buds loved poking fun at that one (think "Hans and Frans" from SNL). I have much better luck with the Demon shirt. Much lower profile, AND the hardened plastic parts of the pads will pull out if you don't want to wear them. Since I use a backpack, I just took the spine plates out of it. It also keeps me pretty warm, as opposed to some of the shirts designed really for other sports that just have a mesh weave. I use a pair of Crash Pad shorts over my longjohns if I'm doing a park session (sorry, so cliche), to protect my tailbone, but they're still a bit bulky and I find I don't wear them much. If I'm just doing a carving session I don't even bother with them. Oh, I didn't have to buy and bigger outerwear with this setup. Still fit under what I had and I do NOT like the baggy look
  6. Headed up with my boy in about an hour. Doing some night riding tonight. Have my extra board and bindings packed for K2 as well. There are 2 buildings right by the entrance to the slopes (only one way to the slopes now, they check tickets right there) just beside the parking lot. One is ski school, and maybe the other is the patrol shack(?). There's another patrol shack at the top of Flying Eagle and you have to take a few chairs to get there. We'll make a run by there every other run or so in the a.m. This sounds dirty, but what will you be wearing? Wonder what K2 would think if I put the board along the fence by the entrance to the lodge to the slopes?
  7. Chris, don't jinx us man! :) That's not going to be rain on Saturday, it will be snow!!! At least I can dream. I'll be there both days, all black and a "safety orange" helmet - hope to see some fellow carvers there.
  8. Mellow, I have a place at Silver Creek, so I'm just going to stay put there. I think some others may be staying with you at the campout though. I won't speak for them but I think a lot of the carvers prefer Silver Creek to Snowshoe. The vertical drop is slightly less that the main mountain at Snowshoe (not Western territory), but the runs are wider and the crowds are WAY smaller than Snowshoe. I've never seen a carver at the main mountain, but have run into a few at Silver Creek.
  9. Sorry Mellow, forgot that some folks might not be as familair with the place. I think the Black Run Sugar Shack, at the bottom of the Mountaineer and Cascade lifts would be a great place to meet. It's right on the slopes, and you can spot folks coming down pretty easily. Unless you're on total beginner runs or solely on the two blacks at Silver Creek, you use those lifts. Anyone out there have better suggestions?
  10. K2, I'll bring the board and bindings and see you over the weekend. Although it sounds like Mellow may have another board offer for you as well. I'll bring what I have and you can take your pick! Mellow (and others), see you when the ropes drop Saturday morning!
  11. Since Snowshoe changed their openings from 8:30 to 9:00 a few years ago, I'm always there when the ropes drop. We could pick a place,or hopefully that early in the morning, we could yell at each other going down Cascade or Spur, from the Cascade triple lift. Something tells me that we hardbooters will, as usual, with our "monoskis" stick out like a sore thumb there!
  12. Mellow, after communicating with you here and there over the last couple of years, and seeing your carving on Snowshoe TV, I'd love to see you out on the slopes next weekend. I'll be at Silver Creek with my little boy that weekend. I'll be in all black with a "safety orange" helmet. Recon, I know we missed each other a few weeks ago when I was going to bring you some equip for to get to K2 to ride. If you're at Silver Creek look for me. Tick

    Snowshoe

Looks like I won't be headed to the 'Shoe this week until Saturday evening, 12/20. I'll ride on the 21 and 22nd. Want to see if that next weather front will bring in some snow. had a buddy on the slopes yesterday - said coverage was getting a bit weak, and some brown coming through. Come on snow!

Sounds like we could have a regular possee going on here. Does this mean we'll have to sit at the entrance to a slope, like a pack of wolves, with all of us sprawled out on the snow so that no one can get by? I am calling this my "winter of love" after a fractured shoulder in February of last year (jumped the barrel at Timberjack going way too fast and landed on my head). Plan on being up there at least one day during the week and the weekend as well. Sounds like we oght to keep posted on this ride site! Hope to see some of you next week/weekend!

Looking forward to it. Self taught and my form is horrible. Could use some pointers!
