Got a bunch of Burton parts and might be able to help, but I'm unclear as to what broke. Did the metal plate under the plastic baseplate break? Or is it the plastic baseplate?

In addition to the listings on the BOL classifieds, you can often find smokin' deals on good beginner carving equipment using the hardbooter.com EBay search for carving gear. Crazedlist is a good way to quickly search CL for carving gear (using FireFox, not IE).

If you start with a 90 degree edge and bevel the base 1 degree the resulting angle is 91 degrees. Beveling the side edge 2 degrees results in an edge of 89 degrees.

My math is a bit rusty, but doesn't 1 degree base bevel and 2 degree side bevel result in an angle of 89 degrees?
