Another busy year for us... just had a baby boy a month ago, and I'm back on skis for a bit to teach Addy to ski this year. I'd be up for a day if it's driving distance from Calgary. Nakiska has just bothered me too much in so many ways, so that's not my first choice, especially on the weekends. I grew up at Sun Peaks, and it's an awesome hill! Highly recommended for carving too.

I'd check out VRBO or AirBnB. I stayed at a nice place through VRBO in Revelstoke that was about $115 CAD in the summer.

I was at Fernie the past 3 days, didn't end up riding... it rained all night, 2 nights. Really warm and slushy Tuesday. Today it was pouring when we woke up and the patrol said the upper slopes were getting a mix of rain and snow, but really icy. It's supposed to cool off a bit for the weekend, so things might improve. Good luck with your trip! Things don't seem busy at all, so if you look for last minute rooms, you should be ok to follow the good snow!

I went for a 2 hour rip with a buddy from work today, to test out some new softboot bindings and get some exercise for the weekend. The snow conditions were actually really nice and I was kicking myself for not bringing my hardboot setup. We're going to head out every few weeks from about 4:30-6:30 if anybody is interested in meeting up. I'm working on convincing him to try hardboots, have boots that will probably fit and an old rock board, if anybody has a really cheap pair of standard bindings they are willing to part with.

I'll be there Saturday... possibly Sunday. I'm super out of shape and haven't ridden for a few years at all! Nick

Unless the conditions get dramatically better, I'll probably not come up this year, but if I did it would probably only be either Sat or Sun. I did get in on the $200 pass though, so once things get better, I would look forward to a day out. I'd be interested in getting some of the intermediate types together with a video camera to have a day to slow down and work on technique.

Update, printed some shorter ones, ran them through the tap, and installed. The fit is decidedly un-snug, so I got them where I wanted and added a few drops of superglue. I think the ramps would work fine, just done in a different material... This PLA is really brittle and doesn't play too nicely with water.

Thanks for the replies. They screwed in perfectly, but are a bit long, so I'll try again tomorrow. No McMaster Carr here, but I did use their website for the hardware dimensions and the thread pitch, etc... I think I improved on the originals with the wider base too. I recall seeing a few pairs of boots where that spot on the toe was getting a bit worn. The cost of the plastic was less than 10 cents... printer a lot more, but I didn't have to pay for that! I'd never buy one for home use. It's way too finicky and the design, setup, and printing takes forever. No ABS because it's sitting in a classroom with virtually no air circulation and no fume hood or anything. It's PLA plastic, which probably won't hold up that well, but it's not a load-bearing part in any way. ABS would be good and Nylon would be probably even better for this kind of part. John, I totally get your point for home use, but in the school it's been pretty cool. After the kids got over making their iPhone cases, and silly things like dinosaur tooth models, we have been making scale model bridges to test out truss designs, will be printing molds for lenses for a light and optics unit etc... The kids in my CAD class are using some of the Autodesk software and are getting pretty skilled. I honestly can't see anything as complex as a boot or mold for one printing out nicely. It's certainly not impossible. If I were to undertake that, I'd want a pretty big printer and I'd use two print heads, one printing the boot material and another printing support material that would dissolve away after.

Hopefully this isn't too off topic.... I am teaching 3D CAD at my school, and designed and printed some toe bail screws for my Sidewinders (sold to me missing them). I ran them through a die today to smooth out the threads and will post some pics installed tonight if they work. The hex key is a bit snug, but works too. If anybody has a printer and wants to try printing them out, PM me for the files. Any other parts (non-load bearing until I get some nylon going) that would be useful?

I'd think patrol might seriously consider yanking your pass. I'd get a Chariot or a pulk sled and give cross country skiing a go. Our little one loves it. It's super cheap for a few years and a good intro to the sport. We'll probably bring her along on the little skis that buckle to her boots this year. Think about the idiots straight-lining on skis and softies too!

Anybody (preferably in Canada) be interested in a pair of Deeluxe Suzuka 26.5 boots? No BTS, but will re-install original lean adjusters. They are in good condition, ridden lightly 3 seasons. Never heated (but ridden) 27 Intuitions included as well as the stock grey liners that have been heated twice. $150 + shipping Also have a set of Power Plates with TD2 red elastomers (0, 3 degree Cants).

There's a second-hand sporting goods place that has quite a few shelves of touring stuff... some of it from the early 90s or before. He might be able to find some used liners there. It's a street off of the main drag, can't remember the exact name. It's close to the Communitea cafe. There are also some bootfitters that might stock new ones, and there's a small place by the Safeway that's the most likely bet for new.

Does anybody have a line on a rental with bedrooms for 3 sets of adults? If not, any recommendations as to whether to stay in town or on the hill? The rental condos on the hill look like quite a hike from the actual base area, and I'm assuming that's uphill too.

Do you know what part of the country you will end up in? I'm in Calgary, Alberta and there is a vibrant carving scene with some really good riders I have learned a ton from. Vancouver has a similar community, and I'm sure out east does too. If you end up near Calgary, Nakiska is the resort we end up at most of the time. It's smaller and pretty much all groomed, so perfect for carving.

You will want to consider weight as well. I weigh about the same as you, and with a bad knee had a very difficult time on stiff flexing boards. When I had a custom board (Coiler) built for my weight it made a world of difference. If you are looking used, consider Donek, Coiler etc... that are matched to weight and find out what it was built for.
