  1. really? If I bend my legs then i back slips out and i fall over/I have far better control standing up straight. Shock absorbtion would be nice though... @Riceball - huzzah! Yeah, i've been on 1 run and i already want to be out there again.
  2. I took out my board for the first time, and it was a blast! The board, boots, and bindings were great, though i popped out of my bindings once, but that was just a mistake on my part. It took me 1.5 hours to get down a green run, but that's just learning. It was an awfully narrow track, so I think ill try hitting some wider runs tomorrow. I was keeping my legs as straight as possible; is that right? Falling down and trying to get up was a tiring experience. Any tips for a first time carver? I can see why people never want to go back to soft boots, this is so addicting. Thanks, cheers, and Happy New Years! Liam
  3. woah, thanks for the help! From what i'm getting so far it's really just the whole hockey stop deal. Minus the trees. I'm not sure i want the tranquil alpine foliage joining me in my lessons; i'd rather just observe them as i zip by :P @ Dave ESPI: what you're describing is basically just 'helixing' the board right? like, pressure on toeside at the front, and heelside at the back (and visa versa)? I get what you're trying to say though, one of my friends suggested that too.
  4. So I'm wanting to try my hand at alpine snowboarding, and i was thinking about how you're oriented differentl on the board, then i thought; how do you break? If the boards have the legendary edge hold that you always hear of then how to do "brake"? many thanks :)
  5. @Crucible Yeah, i kind of figured that the liners would be a sketchy area, seeming as they're thermoformed to the individuals feet. But thanks for the suggestion for my soft-boot configuration. I'll give it a try asap:) My plan was to get hard-boots first so thanks for confirming that notion! @CarvingScooby Unfortunately I don't have "contractors tape":( I used a standard ruler and came up with 29cm, and I have pretty narrow feet; 10cm at the widest point. Do the brands say what feet they match? Thanks for all the support:]
  6. Wow, there are way more people than I expected. I wish I had seen the ride board before, but I suppose that all comes with getting familiar with the site:) So, two things: 1) I found out that my 'mondo' size is, I believe, 28. When buying used boots does one have to purchase new liners? 2) I was thinking that I might just try setting my bindings into a more forward, aggressive stance (softboots.) Will this work? Or will I not have enough back and forth flex?
  7. Thanks for the warm welcome:) Phew that's awfully exciting to know that there's such a pretty big hub somewhere near where I live. @glenn Thanks for the suggestions for getting started and where to look; I really appreciate it. @ink I assume the ride board is somewhere in this forum, so thanks for the direction! @Boris I'm rocking the tall and lanky at 6'2" 72kg. I'm not sure at all what my boot size in 'mondo' is, i'll check the bomber articles to see if i can find those measuring instructions again. I know this isn't very helpful, but i'm a size 12 soft-boot. @Ruwi I hope to get to meet some of you out on the slopes sometime:):) I'm kept pretty busy with rowing but when I get a chance I'll be sure to try to get myself out to Vancouver. Hopefully soon. Thanks all for the speedy replies!
  8. Hey there bomberonline! I'm new to this forum, although I've been a member over at the www.405th.com for a while so I know the rules of forum respect. First off I want to apologize if this topic is unnecessary/in the wrong place etc. I didn't intend to upset anybody and if this topic seems to tic you off a bit just let me know:) Anyways, here's a little intro: I have hardly been a snowboarder for very long but already I'm ripping it up. I have a freestyle board set up with softboots and a duck stance binding setup, but I want something more. I'm not that interested in big air, or tweaked grabs or sick rails; I find linking turns and gliding gracefully (and quickly:)) down the hill. Unfortunately my board doesn't do that for me right now and shakes violently while I try to beat my girlfriend in a race. While I was gliding down one stretch I decided to try a little bit of 'the norm' and shifted my weight to my healside. I felt the most amazing feeling as my board grabbed onto the snow and carved me (not necessarily prettily) around in a quick turn. It was awesome. Mostly I want to get into Alpine snowboarding because nobody does it up here in my neck of the woods (that i know of), and it seems more like what I want out of Alpine snowsports. Here's my delema; I live in Canada and I hardly know what any of this boots sizing stuff means, and Alpine gear is nigh but impossible to find around my parts. This presents me with my first questions. What should I do about getting into the sport with such limited resources? And perhaps I could get some help finding a Canadian forum/vendor for equipment? Otherwise I'll be gladly buying from the Bomberstore, but close is convenient:):) Thanks for reading my bit, and cheers!!
