  1. During the summer I live in a 100 year old mountain lodge in the Medicine Bow National Forest, now threatened by the Mullen Fire.  Forest has been closed and we've been under pre-evacuation order for the last several days.  The fire has spread rapidly in extremely rugged terrain, with dense vegetation and beetle-killed deadfall.

    Thursday/Friday wind event will likely determine whether topography/weather will bring the fire here or to the south.

  2. Cheers and best wishes, SunSurfer;

    Several years back Scott coached snowboard competitors, including aspiring racers, with QAST at Coronet Peak.  While he rides and coaches in soft boots much more frequently than on a high performance carving setup, I'm confident you will enjoy riding with Scott and will undoubtedly benefit from his knowledge and experience.

    Here's a quick GIF animation of Scott railing toe-to-toe carved turns:

  3. @snowboardfast    Thanks for the tip.  I found the vid and in it he says that it is a companion to his written direction on carving and it lists a link to an article here on Bomber.....but the link does not lead to anything.  Does anyone know what happened to that article?

  4. Sounds like fun for you both.

    In addition to the helpful suggestions and resources mentioned in this thread, there are some useful instructional videos on YouTube. I've found the SnowProfessor and Snowboard Addiction channels to be particularly well-crafted and helpful. Your friend might benefit from watching the ones designed for beginners, to preview coming attractions, before you hit the slopes.

  5. ...My question was if anybody between 1976 or 1985 tried a snowboard Alpine stance on a Monoski rather than the ski boot side by side position that is standard...

    In 1984 or 85, as an undergraduate at UVM, Jeff Caron (who later founded Catek) mounted some of his early hard boot bindings, in a snowboard stance, to a Dynastar monoski. Jeff's nickname at UVM was 'Rhino', and the board was cheerfully dubbed the 'Rhino-Star'.

    Jeff brought his board to Sugarbush, way before snowboarding was allowed on the slopes. When he tried to board the lift he was stopped and informed that snowboarding was not allowed. He promptly responded that he wasn't snowboarding, and pointed at the board's topsheet graphics, which clearly spelled out that it was, in fact, a monoski (not prohibited at the Bush).

    Apparently he got at least one run on his board before the lift staff wised up.

    We all respected that.

  6. ...Looking for wide, moderate-pitch blues to carve. Any others to suggest?
    Unless there's heaps of fresh powder, you won't be lacking good runs for throwing high performance carves. Here's some info to help get you started: http://www.bomberonline.com/VBulletin/showthread.php?13096-Trip-to-Vail-which-runs

    As indicated, it's a good idea to let the daily grooming report be your guide:

    There's excellent snow and more on the way. PM when you're in town and I'm happy to provide local intel.

  7. ...since the company went under at the end of Summer...QUOTE]

    I've been searching as well for the goggle strap mount after mine was nicked last season. They have been hard to find but turn up every once and again on ThEBay.

    FYI Contour has been purchased and will apparently rise, phoenix-like, from the ashes. Like you, I like the sleek form factor and image quality and look forward to their return to the marketplace.

  8. ...For years I rode the Burton Driver and Driver x boot and loved them but the last few versions have been anything but stiff. Last season I bought the 12/13 driver x and although stiffer than the previous few years they are still not nearly as stiff as the older ones. Does anyone have a suggestion for a soft boot that will be stiffer than the current Driver x boot?

    FWIW, 'Mini Shred', Burton's Boot Product Manager, has said the Driver X has been re-engineered to be a lot stiffer than the past few years' versions. You might want to try on a pair of the '14 Driver X boots (I currently ride 'em) to see if they work for you.

    FWIW. Hope you find what you seek...

  9. 6'3" 280 lbs size 13 feet, softie set up.

    Anyone have anything nice please let me know.

    I have a bunch of wide big mountain freeride boards (Donek Sasquatch, Burton Baron & Custom X) for bigfoot riders, some are near-new; others less so. All are well-cared for. Prices range from $175 - $525 plus shipping. Please PM if you might be interested and I'm happy to post pics and additional info.

    <img src="http://i43.tinypic.com/6r3c03.jpg" border="0" alt="JP, Champagne Glade, Vail, CO.">

    Also have boots, bindings, and risers in very good used condition if you are looking for those as well.

  10. ...my nephew is a good kid and i want to help him out. let me know. thanks, dave
    I have a bunch of wide all-mountain boards that would work for your nephew. Some have seen some use, others are relatively new. Each has been well-cared for and would offer many seasons of high performance fun for your kin.

    While it would involve shipping (approx. $30 USPS Priority), one might fit your price range and would quickly get your guy up and riding.

    Also have risers which would help a rider with a size 15 foot address overhang.

    <img src="http://i44.tinypic.com/359a544.jpg" border="0" alt="Jeff Smith, Vail, CO.">

    If you think this might work, please PM your price range and I'm happy to provide a list of possible options for your nephew.

  11. Hey, maybe, you know cheaper, than 25$, parking?!!
    There are more than a few free parking spots in Vail. Many are located on the free bus line a short distance from the base areas. Get there early as they fill up fast during busy holiday periods and most weekends.

    Info on Vail parking:

    http://www.vailgov.com/subpage.asp?page_id=572

    Free parking places, easily accessed using the free town shuttle:

    http://www.vaileventparking.com/

    While less economical, many folks find parking in the structures worth the daily fee as it allows quick and easy access to swap boards, change clothes, get lunch, etc. Also the Vail Village parking structure houses the Ski and Snowboard Museum, worth a visit while you're in town.
