I can only comment about conditions as of Thanksgiving day. On the "groomed" runs there was no threat of hitting rocks .... I would not ride if I had to worry about hitting them with my boards. A 23 yr old wilder "non hard boots" rider friend of mine ... went off the groom / through the trees etc and only hit one rock. But ... that was Thursday ... today is Monday ... so can't comment on the current rock threat. I doubt I will be going up there till there is another good dump of snow. Gavin

My wife, Nichapat and I went to opening day at Meadows yesterday….  Snow was dry and nice yesterday…. Good day for gradually getting back into the swing of things! Needless to say …we timed it nicely … We were there from around 12:45 till 4pm …. There were not that many people when we arrived … but passed lots going home on our way up there .. and as the day went on … less and less people there …as they headed home for Thanksgiving … Of course …the new Aspen Style Gates are GREAT !! And now that we have ditched disastrous AT&T and got awesome VERIZON … I can easily WORK up there as well … so that is PERFECT !!!! Hard for me to be away from Cell, TEXT and E-MAIL during the day for work …but Verizon makes that all possible now. OH ...IF anybody wants advice on how to get out of their AT&T 2 year contracts with NO penalty ... ask me ... I just got BOTH ours cancelled .. and did not have to pay ONE CENT ..after they originally said we had to pay $275 each to break the contract !!! Temp was 32 degrees when we left Meadows yesterday ...at the parking lot !!! I doubt I will be going back till after we get some more real snow again ...which does not look at all likely this coming week unfortunately !! Seems like yesterday was the best day for this coming week !! I wish I had stuck to my plan of getting fit this summer !!! Guess I will just have to get fit now !!! And loose about 6 or 7 pounds .. which I was also supposed to do over the summer !!! Gavin

Swoard experience anyone?

Today was the last day of SPRING Snowboarding on Mount Hood. I got to ride my Gen4 SWOARD Extremecarver this week and it was great. I really really love it. But did not really get a chance to ride any good EC runs with it yet…. as the grooming was either really BAD at Timberline or Magic Mile and or Palmer were closed. Although today on Magic Mile the snow was good ...but a little too soft already by the time I got there today. I could be wrong ... but I do believe that my SWOARD is now the FIRST EVER SWOARD to ride down Mount Hood in Oregon, USA I can't wait for Mnt Hood Meadows to open in Nov / Dec this year so I can really test it out then. But most of all ... I can't wait to ride it in the French Pyranees and in Zinal, Switzerland with all the other SWOARD riders in January 2013. Gavin

Well today was the LAST day of the Spring Season Pass... and the last day of Snowboarding for me ... until I go again... when ever that may be. The snow was actually really nice today. Magic Mile was pretty good ... Was up there with my wife ...we had fun for a while ...then left. Saw Warren riding under us a few times ... and bumped into him on the way to the car park, as we both left at the same time. My new Swoard on the way up the chairlift. The view of the top of Mnt Hood with some cool clouds ever changing over the top. And some other regular snowboarder ....as there was no other Hardbooter to take a photo of. So that is the end of my Timberline Reports ... until I go again... maybe I will buy some single day tickets this summer... Maybe ... Maybe Not !!! Time will tell. Gavin

Went to Timberline again today ... Rode with Warren who was riding his Donnek. It was OK up there today ... Got there at 8am and only Magic Mile was open to the public. Pucci has a Race going on this weekend....so is blocked off ... Stormin Norman is closed for now it seems. Palmer opened later as usual, but has been consistently Badly Groomed since it opened this season. The grooming on Magic Mile has not been so good either on most days this spring. I left at soon after 11am. Needless to say the grooming at Timberline continues to disappoint me.... even more so now when I am looking for a nice groomed run to ride my new SWOARD on. It made me remember the days when I had a summer pass and would be annoyed .. that the RACE TEAMS all had perfectly groomed runs ... and non racers were pushed off to the side with NO Grooming or very poor grooming on most days. So definitely decided today NOT to buy that summer pass. It was surprisingly empty today .... I probably won't even go on the LAST day of the SPRING SEASON tomorrow ... unless somebody else is going for sure ...then maybe I will consider going again early for a few hours. Otherwise I am ready to call it quits for this snow season. Next stop FLORENCE on the Oregon Coast for some Sandboarding later this summer .. Then on to the French Pyrenees and the Swiss Alps in January 2013 to ride with the SWOARD guys there. Then hopefully on to Aspen in February 2013 again. And of course, back to Mnt Hood Meadows hopefully by the end of November 2012 !!!! Gavin

Magic Mile was nice from around 9am till 11am or so today. Palmer opened later than Magic Mile... but was not well groomed (as usual) at all. I did one run on Palmer and went back to Magic Mile ... I did ride my SWOARD today and LOVED it !!! On two or three turns ... the board seemed to want to go STRAIGHT DOWN the hill .. and did not come around underneath me on the turn ... Not sure what I was doing wrong there ... The same thing has happened on my BASTARD before ... A good way to stretch your back ... But obviously something I am doing wrong... but have no clue what yet. Other than that ... the transition to the SWOARD was seamless. I pretty much decided today that I will NOT be buying a summer pass at Timberline... I will try and go back there Sunday and Monday ... the LAST two days of the season. I thought I saw another alpine rider today ... but not 100% sure. I waited a while at the top of Magic Mile for him to come back up ... but never saw him again. There were a lot of people on Palmer ... but Magic Mile was not crowded at all .. even though they had a bunch of race lanes set up already. Anybody going Sunday and or Monday ??????? Gavin

Hi Bryan ... Of course "Extreme Sandboarding" ... As long as I can borrow YOUR Snowboarding Pants, Jacket and Gloves !! As for Timberline today ... (Friday 25th) Only lift open right now is Pucci ... due to high winds ... and FOG ... So I will be staying home today. Might be FORCED to go on Sunday and or Monday now... as Saturday is still looking a bit iffy ...I do believe. Gavin

Hi PNW's How about we make a plan to go down to Florence later this summer ... Maybe in August when it is hotter and spend a weekend SAND BOARDING ... Don't know about you ... but I will want to organize to get one of these Dune Buggies to take us up each time. Seems like unless you have a local guide with a Dune Buggy ... you are going to be stuck on the BOARING SLOW BUNNY SLOPES !!! Pity they are not as good as the dunes in Peru or in Namibia etc ... But should be fun ... IF we can organize a Dune Buggy !!! Just a thought for the summer !!! Gavin

Hi Bryan... YES ... thanks ... BUT ... it is expensive ...although I have no doubt it would be great and very good for me... but more of a negative for me is that it is in Bend and NOT on Mount Hood. I really do not want to be away from home for so long now....nor do I want to pay for accommodation there. I'd be more interested in something LOCAL at Timberline....close to home. Gavin

Hey Kelvin ... Hard to believe ... but have not ridden my SWOARD yet. Waiting for Magic Mile / Palmer to be open when I am there. So still riding my Bastard !!! And still staring at my SWOARD lying on the living room floor ! Well can't stop staring at two of my favorite things.... A SWOARD in one hand and an Assault Rifle in the other hand ... What more can I ask for ????... Well maybe a DUPRAZ Powder Board for next winter. Looks like LESS rain predicted up at Timberline for Friday ... Anybody else considering going again before the end of the Spring Pass on Monday ???? I'm still hoping to go tomorrow ... and may go again this weekend ... but just worried it will be way too crowded being Memorial Day weekend and the last weekend of the Spring Pass. Gavin

TIMBERLINE Spring/Summer 2012

Well it was like any winter day in February at Timberline today. Hard to believe it was MAY 23rd .... and not FEBRUARY 23rd !!!! It was snowing all day long ...and the road was even covered in snow. I met Randy up there again and we had fun riding in Powder around Stormin Norman. Was not the best snow ...but was still fun... I am still practicing trying to ride backwards ... needless to say ..I fell on my back twice. I think Randy and I will both be up there on Friday. I think my wife, Nichapat will come up on Friday as well. Should be sunny and nice up there on Friday....or MAYBE NOT ...as I just noticed that the forecast is now saying it may rain up there on Friday. If raining ... I wont go on Friday. Will keep watching the weather ... Not many days left of the SPRING PASS ...and really do not want to go up there on a Holiday Weekend... But may just have to !!!

Just wanted to thank you again for letting me ride behind you and watch ....

Needless to say I was very jealous and once again realized just how much I have to learn and how many years of catching up I have to do.

Thanks as well for helping with my Bindings.

Remember you guys are always welcome to stay over at my place in Hood River ... I have an awesome place with a great view of the river and the gorge.

Nice deck with a hot tub after riding ...and Hood River is much more fun than Gov Camp !!!

Look forward to crossing paths again .... hopefully I will be better by then ... most likely in Aspen 13 ... or may just have to come to Stratton some time to see what that is all about !!! My friend Dan Lambert from Canada goes there after Aspen and was there with Joerg this year.

Hope you had a good trip home.

Wed, Thurs and Fri are looking good for Timberline ...so will go and test the SWOARD out then.

As Todd wrote, today's conditions were awesome. We had a blast. It was great to ride behind Sean and Todd and watch them ride. Who ever came up with saying: JEALOUSLY GETS YOU NOWHERE.... had absolutely NO CLUE what they were talking about !!! JEALOUSLY definitely gets me buying a TIMBERLINE SUMMER PASS ...so I can practice more before next season .. so that I can ride a little bit more like they do and be better before I get to Europe in Jan 2013 !!! If you were riding with Sean and Todd .... Jealously would have had you placing an order for those new "Yet To Be Named Things" they were testing !!!! It was fun up there today. As for sharing a lane in June or July... I can talk to the other Gavin of Snow Performance, as he runs some Camps at Timberline each summer ... And see if he has any suggestions about sharing a lane with him ... He only has a few people in his camps ...so can't see it being THAT expensive ... BUT ... can't imagine any race camp wanting to share a lane with us ... as their "campers" are paying a lot to have as many runs down as possible and won't wanting to waist extra time for us to do our runs before they get another chance. I'll let you know what I find out next week. BTW...Sean and Todd ...as you probably realized and I have no doubt Bryan will vouch that this is true ... Your "Secrets" are safe with me ...as I had NO CLUE what you guys were talking about 99% of the time in regards to the equipment you were testing. So certainly cannot explain to others what I saw. As you saw ... I don't even know how to put my own simple bindings on by myself yet. :o) Sean ... I will send you an e-mail tomorrow to remind you ... But don't forget to please find out about that Video Camera for me ...or the current version that is now available. Was great riding with you guys. Thanks so much. Look forward to seeing you in Aspen in February 2013.

Did not go to Timberline today ...as I thought I would. Leaving for Portland shortly ... Going to REI and other Sport Shops etc. Also want to buy a small HAND HELD VIDEO CAMERA ... one that has a ZOOM ...so NOT a GO PRO ! any suggestions .... I'd be happy spending $300 ... would go up to $400 to $500 if it was really worth making that jump. Will bring the "CARVED" DVD ! Will bring my new SWOARD and BINDINGS (and Boots) in the hope that somebody will have time to help put the bindings on in the correct place on the board for me. but NO PRESSURE ...as I know in a Restaurant /brewery is probably NOT the best time or place for that. See you all at 6pm.
