  8. if you think TC's access road is frightening, Ohau's access road when I last went had my adrenal glands exhausted! I've ridden TC, and like to hang out in the Summit Saddle Basin when I go. The front face the last few years has been short of snow when I've been there in August, and the afternoon sun tends to make it slushy. The Basin is colder and generally not as crowded. In the past I've not enjoyed it as much as Cardrona, but that is more a measure of my lack of skill and ability to take full advantage of its slopes. Not been there for a couple of years, as I missed the whole 2013 season with a ruptured Achilles' tendon, and didn't ride there in the short trip I had to Central Otago in the winter of 2014. Cardrona is my current favourite field in Central, and I'll happily ride the Remarkables as well. Coronet Peak has been a serious disappointment the last three times I've been there. Crowded, warm, and slushy lumpy snow from top to bottom. The last time I went it was like riding on glue. With a freshly waxed board I was struggling to get any glide at all, the board was almost stuck to the snow! Overall the NZ season seems to be getting shorter and shorter. I now figure on decent snow being reliably around in Central Otago for perhaps the last week of July, all of August, and maybe the first week of September. For work reasons I have to plan snow trips months in advance.
  9. There are a few of us I know, but we don't all know of each other. Now that we have a ride board let's make use of it! So if you are currently living in NZ and hanging out for this coming winter, post here so we can get to know you. I've started threads for the larger fields that will have groomed slopes. If where you're going to ride isn't listed start a thread for there. I am pleasantly surprised at how often I meet other carvers. If you're an Aussie reading this, you could start your own thread. Mase, Dan, get your side started!
  10. And in time for this coming Southern Hemisphere winter! Thanks Fin.
  11. New Zealand: Range of ski fields in both the North & South Islands, but the most reliable snow in recent years is in the Central Otago fields, Cardrona & Treble Cone. There is also heliskiing available. Best times for snow are from late July, through August. By early September things are starting to warm up again, not that it gets cold by US standards. Check the NZ Ministry of Education website for school holiday dates and avoid those periods! Kiwis like their snow fix too, and school holidays have long lift lines and high traffic.
  12. No success yet. Using Google Drive have tried reloading the files as videos and as a .rar compressed file. Each time unable to get the files to a state where they could be successfully downloaded by someone else. I have other small files on Google Drive that behave beautifully, so I'm very puzzled by this! I would use my free Dropbox service but that has inadeqaute space with my cloud stored library of work-related journal articles. My bibliography software, Papers, is linked to Dropbox. Any other ideas?
  13. DIY is infectious! You spent too much time in my company during SES!
  14. Thanks for the info Michael. Not sure what the "error" is due to. Will keep working on it and post when I think it's sorted.
  15. Used the hand armour for real at SES 2015. Comments & questions from almost everyone I rode the chair with. The "jugs" caused quite a stir! Thanks to Steve Recsky for the photos of them in use, for my riding style was transformed by a combination of Joergs' Pureboarding clinic and Richard's Steeps Clinic. I now happily "touch down" especially when it's steep. The photos were taken on the last day of the session, on Javelin & Ruthies, runs that intimidated me in the past. These photos show the second pair I made, no protuding pole tip at the bottom, and a GoPro mount on top of the right hand. The best way I found to use them is shown clearly in the toeside turn, hand in front of the body with the long axis of the hand armour across the direction of movement. Using the long axis in the line of travel makes it more likely to catch a little and push the hand/arm back. The little protusions are best heat welded smoothly to blend into the contour of the end of the HDPE pressure vessel the hand armour is made from. Thanks to OhD for the video @ Buttermilk Just being worn near the beginning, then around 3:10 shows version 2 getting a harder workout. Some of the video was shot from the GoPro mount on my right hand armour.
  16. PGS & PSL videos have been reprocessed using VirtualDub and GoPro Studio to reduce size but maintain reasonable quality. https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BxOLZ1CjGcj4UHNldXpvdGs4bEk&usp=sharing
  17. Home from SES and doing some further processing of the original Sochi finals files to reduce file size prior to reuploading to Google Drive. Will post when files are available.

  19. SES at Highlands today, 2nd ride up Exhibition chair, about 0845hrs!
  20. I have a similar area of reduced sensation on the top of my left foot that came on during SES 2012. The sensation has still not recovered to normal. The nerves (branches of the superficial and deep peroneal nerves) that supply that area run just under the skin on the top of the foot and have been squeezed, and in my case apparently permanently damaged. I no longer crank the two buckles over the foot on my Head Stratos Pros up tight, merely enough to hold the buckle shut, and my right foot has had no problems, and the left has not got any worse.
  21. Starting off with the after party Day 1 @ Bumps http://s1283.photobucket.com/user/AlanMcKenzieNZ/library/SES%202015
  22. I'll be riding at Snowmass and ready for riding buddies from about 1pm. Got some NASTAR runs to make in the am. Who else is around tomorrow and ready to ride?
  23. Thursday: Clear skies and sunshine, temp topping out high 40's at Village Express Base, 42 at Sam's Knob, but snow holding up reasonably well. Saw a couple of carvers from the chairs, but never caught up with them, or them me. Rode Elk Camp, Alpine Springs, Sheer Bliss, and the Express today, finishing off with some steeps practice on Moonshine and Ute Shute. Coverage generally better than Tuesday, yesterday's little bit of snow has made a difference.
  24. Wednesday, Snowmass: Small amount of snow fell off and on during the day, only enough to obliterate yesterdays tracks at the edge of the runs and the more obvious brown spots. Now (9:15 pm) no snow falling.
