I'm going to Sugarloaf Feb 21-24 with my family. We are stoked because we have only ever been to hills in Ontario and Nova Scotia. I have a few questions: 1. What is the most common alpine set up used by locals? I could bring my SL or GS Protons or I could bring a freecarve board. I'm bringing a soft boot set-up for riding with my 14 year old son but I want to ride plates when he is taking a rest. What would you recommend? I have been boarding for about 20 years but I'm not a great carver so I will probably stick to the less difficult runs. I'm going to take a lesson as well and I want to do that on an alpine set-up. 2. Is there a waxing area? I would like to be able to wax my boards in the evening, is there a place to do this? 3. We are staying in the hotel so I'm also interested in how the equipment lockers are set up. Are the lockers in a central area or are they at the hotel? Hopefully these questions aren't too dumb. Any local knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I hate UPS. I purchased a snowboard and bindings from a US seller for $100usd + $40 shipping via UPS. It cost me $60cdn to get it from UPS. I found out a couple of things: The value of a Gift only goes to $60. Anything above that amount is taxed. It doesn't matter to UPS if it is listed as a gift or not, they charge brokerage fees based on the insured amount. In this instance I paid taxes on the $40 and UPS brokerage on the full $100 insured value. I could have asked the shipper to list the package as two items (board and bindings) and list them as gifts for $50 each, that would have saved me a few bucks on taxes but I would still have to pay the brokerage on the insured amount. I don't mind shipping UPS, they have good tracking, but I will no longer consider having something shipped to me via UPS unless the deal is so good that it is still a deal after I factor into account the inflated brokerage charges.

Steamboat Springs would be quite an improvement over Martock:rolleyes: I don't know what I would do with the extra 160 runs and 3,300 feet of vertical. Post it up if you are ever riding at Martock, I'm new to the hard boot scene and looking to learn as much as I can.

Is ther any metal on the baseplate or is it all lexan?

Are the Carriers the same designe as the Race Plates but made of a see-thru material? The bindings that I was looking at are advertised as Raceplates but they appear to be clear.

Ok, new carver question. I'm looking for used bindings, I'm thinking that Burton Raceplates might be ok for me. The question pertains to some of the baseplates appearing to be made of a lexan material as opposed to metal. How many different types of baseplates are there for the Burton Raceplates? I am thinking that based on what I have read the metal baseplates would be fine but I'm very wary of the plastic (lexan) baseplates. If someone could give me some info on the materials that were used and the durability of each I would appreciate it. Also, did Burton make different sizes for the baseplates or are they a universal size? Sorry if it's a dumb question, I've been boarding for 18 years but I've only recently begun to consider hardboots and alpine set-ups. Thanks.
