  1. The lift attendants at my area keep referring to what I ride as a "speed board". I smile and nod my head. If such a thing were to exist, is there some combination of length, width, shape, surface area, etc., that would make one board faster than another and would actually have more importance than wax, base material and preparation?
  2. From the number of Burton Alps that appear on e-bay, it must have been a popular board. Would it be an appropriate board to recommend to someone wanting to get into alpine gear? I have experience with the FP, UP and the Wire but not the Alp. Also, Burton made a board called the Coil that looks the same as the Wire, does anyone know what the differences are. Thanks guys.
  3. I keep seeing the same thing too. Don't know where it is, but sure looks like a Coiler he's riding.
  4. I know you guys with big mountains in your backyards like to cruise around on long boards, but at the local areas where I ride, if you are on anything over 170cm, you might get in 10 turns from top to bottom and either end up going real fast or skidding because the runs aren’t wide enough to complete the turns. Whenever I go to Mont Tremblant or Mont Blanc in Quebec, I see riders on boards that look to be about 155cm or shorter, and they are laying down amazing tight turns with perfect c-shaped grooves. Seems to be the answer to narrow or crowded runs. If any of you ride these short boards, what length and sidecut radius are you using? What are the disadvantages to these boards? For what it’s worth, even on a good day when my riding doesn’t suck too badly, I can’t come close to staying in their tracks on my 163cm Volkl.
  5. I have the older TD1 with the frustrating floppy heel bails(bomber what were you thinking?) and the easiest fix would be to buy the parts to upgrade them to the spring loaded bails, except Bomber seems to be permanently out of the springs. My solution was to fabricate a metal support with rubber pads that attaches to the rear of the heel blocks and holds the bail up. Works fine, but the pads compress and wear, requiring often replacement. Does anyone have other solutions? How about another source for the springs, or has anyone tried making their own spring?
  6. My understanding of the free trade agreement is that goods manufactured in the USA can be brought into Canada without any duty charges. How about boards such as F2, that are purchased in the USA but not made there? I have had good luck with items shipped via USPS/Canada Post. Usually a flat $5.00 border fee and the tax, but no duty charges. I guess it depends on how the shipping declaration form is filled out? Thanks for any information or advice from those of you have bought boards in the USA.
  7. It's a 1999 Nitro GT77, has a silver top sheet with a bold blue steak. Tip to tail is 176cm. widths are 24-19-23.5 Have any of you ridden it or know anything about it? Thanks guys.
  8. If you really want to experience equivalent carving on skiis, you have to get more extreme with the equipment. Go to a soft world cup slalom ski with a 12m sidecut and a 165cm length. The bindings should be mounted on a riser plate that doesn't interfere with the ski flex curve. Finally, spend more than just a few hours on them learning how to make them work.
  9. Thanks guys, there is some really good info here and those photo sequences are superb!!!
  10. Does anyone have advice, tips or drills that will help a carver get his hips lower to the snow? As a former ski instructor, I understand about angulation, and on skiis I can leave twin tracks with the best of them, but on a snowboard where we are balanced on a single edge, the turn seems to be over before I get my hips low enough to the inside of the turn. My tracks look fairly good and precise without a lot of skidding, but I am really just riding the sidecut around, and I have to get the board to a higher edge angle and put more pressure on it to bend it into a tighter radius for better speed control. I’m thinking I would make real progress on a long slope with hero snow, but I’m stuck on short run areas with eastern groomed ice for snow. For what it’s worth, I’m 6’ 2”, 170 lbs., ride a 168cm Burton ultaprime, and my huge Susuka’s require me to ride 65/60 deg’s. This seems to be a psychology, confidence issue. Maybe I should write to Dr. Phil.
  11. To adjust the cuff cant, do you just loosen the screw and slide the cuff to where you want it, then retighten screw? There don't appear to be any tooth indents or degree marks. What am I missing?
  12. As near as I can tell, Raichle boots (SB423) don't come in sizes bigger than 30. My ski boots (nordica) and my hardboots (oxygen) are both 30.5 and they are both the perfect length for my foot that measures 30.4. The Raichles would have to be a mail-order item, and I'm worried that they might be a tad short. Thanks for any experience that will help.
