  4. Hey Petrol, what's up? Haven't seen you in a while :) I messed up my knee, had some work done on it last spring and managed to bust up my old boots. I went up to Silver Creek a few weeks ago to try out my new HSPs and *still* have a nice bruise where they tried to take a bite out of my calf at the tongue/rear-liner intersection. Do you have a set of HSP's? Have you had that problem? I might try my old liners or take them over to Peter Glenn. They have a pretty good bootfitter named Thomas who has worked with me on a few things over the years.

There's an artificial ski slope in Lynchburg, VA near Liberty University... http://www.liberty.edu/snowflex/ I'm really curious to know if you can 'carve' on it, ie it has something to dig into and provide edge hold. In the meanwhile I guess I have a little while to figure out what to do to replace my busted boots.
  6. In case anyone wasn't aware, the local police are very serious about ticketing ANY sort of violation possible. I got a 14 over speeding ticket there 3 weeks ago, a friend got a 14 over speeding ticket there 2 weeks ago. Another friend got pulled this past weekend along with 1 other car (both for tint violations, license plate not mounted on front of aftermarket grill guard) while a 3rd car got pulled over leaving the gas station for having auxiliary headlights mounted on the hood of his Wrangler (never mind the lights were not hooked up and were non-functional). Just thought I'd pass along that if you have anything that could conceivably be ticketable about your vehicle or driving, you'll probably get ticketed for it near Monterey, VA. I guess they like to answer that question "don't you have anything better to do?" Ugh.

  8. Man, what an awesome weekend... Friday night it was cooooooold when we got there. The truck said -10 while we were unpacking! Saturday I think it was still somewhere around 14 for a high, but the light was decent, slopes basically empty because it was cold... snow was perfect for carving! It would hold any carve you threw at it. Probably the best riding conditions I've had all year, and the best I've ridden all year. Legs/knees felt pretty solid, so we spent probably 4 hours straight hammering runs, laying some serious trenches. Zero lift lines, no crowds, great snow for cracking the throttle wide open... Sunday was a tiny bit warmer (26 or so) and snowing. Still really good conditions, but a bit more crowded.
  9. Blacks around this area of the east coast are often smooth and less populated than other slopes. I like having some rollers to crest and carve on. Steep, bumpy black= no fun on a board for me... Steep, groomed racecourse blacks- I've skiied Birds of Prey at Beaver Creek or Vail (can't remember, 8 years ago...) which I think they used for the downhill racecourse for the Goodwill Games. Definitely wouldn't point it and go on that slope, but it gives you a huge respect for just how fast top-level skiiers and boarders go when shooting for medals.
  10. Found Petrol on the slope, did some riding with him on sunday... A little on the cold/firm snow side, but not bad. Both of my legs were hurting all weekend so my riding was not my finest... but I didn't run into anyone, so at least I have that! Hopefully I can get the legs to heal up a bit this week, since I *should* be back up there this weekend! Anyone else coming up?
  11. Looks like I'll be up there... blue/white Uvex helmet, orange goggles, blue/white jacket on a Pink/black Burner split-tail Oh, and any exposed skin is brown, lol. That makes me stick out a little while on the slopes... -Chris
  12. Snowshoe's very narrow occasionally off-pitched cross trails burn my legs up more than anything else. Holding a 10 minute heel edge while trying to avoid a pack of people down the Flume just isn't much fun. As has been said... wider runs, mainly straight downhill pitches, less crowds at Silver Creek. You can "open it up" a lot more without being dangerous at SC. Saturday weather might be cruddy, sunday looks good though. Leaning more towards being up there, probably won't be up at rope drop but I'll bump into the pack at some point if most of you are riding Cascade lift. I hang out on channel 7-11 if anyone has an FRS radio and wants to catch up. -Chris

    I don't know if I'll be up there or not on the 19th. "Maybe" Still surprised I have not bumped into any of you, my brother was up there a lot last season on his Hot Blast, I got out a good number of times on my Burner. I think there's an instructor at Snowshoe who rides a couple different Volkl plate boards, I believe his name is Chris as well.

    I'm going up on the 12th weekend. Actually a little disappointed that Silver Creek isn't open yet since I actually haven't boarded at Snowshoe in years... Usually SC has very little crowd and the wide runs work out better for carving. Any suggestions for good carving runs at Snowshoe that are open now?
  17. I will be testing a custom-printed topsheet this winter made by Creative Grafix motocross decal company. It'll be interesting to see if the edges will get peeled up by severe trench-digging, but they have a couple different material/adhesive options.
  18. Hello, I don't post here much, but I've been riding plates for roughly 11 years now. I thought the issues might be intertwined to some degree so I thought I'd mention them together and see if there's one cure, or if I need to do different things to solve them separately Haven't had any problems with shin bang, blisters etc. which is why I'm somewhat reluctant to try a bunch of different boots apart from the fact that there aren't any hardboot component dealers nearby. Boots- Raichle 223 Boards- Sims Burner 168 split-tail + Burton Coil 173 Rider weight- 210lbs. Leg shape- narrow ankle bone structure, thick calves First problem- For high-speed high-power turns on the Burner, I feel like my heels are trying to lift up and out of the boots, particularly the rear. Changing the forward lean doesn't seem to effect this. If I tighten the lower buckles enough to keep my heel locked in to a comfortable degree, I find that it restricts blood circulation and my lower leg burns out faster. Second problem- As I've gotten heavier and stronger with age, I prefer to tighten the top buckles up more to stiffen the boot. I'm strong enough to power out of bobbles if I need to. Again, with the buckles tighter it restricts blood circulation and I burn out faster. I'd like to stiffen the flex of the boot because I seem to ride better that way, and tighten up the heel so I don't feel like I'm going to pull out of my boot without needing to cut off the circulation through my leg. OR is it possible I'm pulling out of the heel because I'm "undersprung" on boot stiffness. IE if the boot didn't flex as much I *might* not pull out of the heel. Not sure on this theory, any thoughts? Would something like a SkitMetrix Booster Strap help add stiffness so the boot supports me a little better without needing to clamp things down so tight I have no circulation?

  20. Last weekend at SC was AWESOME. Saturday- no lift lines, sunny, 40+ degrees, not many people, snow felt a little hard at first, but with a good edge on the board (luckily I sharpened the night before) you could pretty much crank turns as hard as you wanted. The slightly granular top layer seemed to keep top speed down a little, but the snow held really well for carving. Gf got some great photos, I'll try and post them up later. Pretty cool, a couple runs I did I was literally the only person on the slope. Lots of space to carve, pretty much a perfect day. Sunday- a little cooler, overcast, flat light but no fog. snow was a tad harder than saturday, but still pretty good. My legs were burned up from saturday though, couldn't ride hard for too long on sunday before they started getting a little sloppy.
