  1. 8 am update: Chair 1 is running. I'm going to lay it out straight because today's news is shockingly beautiful--18+ inches in 24 hours and 11 inches overnight at the summit. That's snow, pure snow. Get a hold of yourself! It's okay to do a little snow dance as you read this report on your computer screen. The National Weather Service has just changed to a blizzard warning for the Flathead Valley, and we do expect wind gusts at the top of the Big. The mid-mountain temp is forecasted to rise to 7 degrees. It was snowing hard when I arrived at 5:15 am, but is has already subsided in the village. By the time the resort opens there could be 1-3 more inches at the summit. The snow feels lighter than yesterday, so I'm expecting an off-the-charts day. Ski Patrol will be doing lot of control work this morning, working hard to get the mountain open. If you look at the NOAA forecast, this snow is going to continue all week. As many of you know, Chair 1 went down yesterday. Lift Operations opened Chair 4 and Chair 5. I would advise that you check this report after 8:00 am for an updated lifts report. In light of an 11 inch day, now it is even more important that read the following suggestions: 1) Don't miss out on a 4 day snow storm; 2) Volunteer for our cool events or tell some friends about it; 3) Call your mother--you ski bums have had the best season ever (243 inches and counting) and you've probably forgotten about everything else. Also, the Whitefish Winter Carnival is happening this weekend! This is a lively, comical, and heartfelt expression of our amazing community. On Feb. 2, we will have a Torchlight Parade on the slopes of the Big. Should be a sight to see... Here's the info you need below... Living the dream. We all are. Caeli out.
  2. 21 inches in the last 24 hrs . blizzard warning in the valley emergency travel only until 9am all the schools are closed. wow oh yeah and its supposed to snow for 3 more days. one spectacular day of carving on saturday followed by neverending dump. bring back memories paulk? shred? I am supposed to work today but if nobody shows by 10 I am closing the office and breaking the drifts to get there. the locals were on the early chair yesterday and got to the back before the closure. they reported 20 -30 people on the backside all day in beautiful untracked snow. So far no word on chair one yet today.
  3. I thought the whole shred crew was coming! well minus the funny gumbi guy with the weird accent:lol: your not coming I am heartbroken. I got old ,fat and lazy just so I could hang with you:eplus2:
  4. :eplus2:der schnei kommt:eplus2: Its puking snow as we speak! Groomers were fantastic yesterday softened up to hero snow by early afternoon. It was warmer on the mtn than in the valley by 15 degrees. beautiful sunshiny day.
  5. AMtrak from spokane to whitefish is easy and reasonable but it boards in the middle of the night. Its a three to three and a half hour drive. missoula is 100 miles but the prices aren't that different to just flyin in here. flathead county airport otherwise known as glacier park international. there is also a bus but I am uncertain of its schedules. trailways I believe is the line.
  6. I have a slightly modified set of Cateks. Drake highbacks and straps. I was wondering if anyone has a preference on boots used with these. My vans Ntypes are to big to strap in and the other softies I have are to soft in the cuffs. something light and low profile but stiff in the cuffs.
  7. I was definitely thinking along those lines. New guy stomping around the board peeing on all the bushes etc. a little much in my book. that said I think I am gonna like him! house training condescending?yeah I know:( couldn't resist though! sort of an under handed note that we all go over the top now and again. No harm meant!
  8. :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: I think I just **** myself :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
  9. Allee anyone who questions your response above hasn't been reading all the other threads he's responded to. a little over the top most of the time but a great source of info. lets see if we can house train him
  10. I have found the meat of your posts to be insightful and experienced. that said I have found the rest of it to be condescending and illmannered especially from the new guy in the community. Chill a little and relax we are all here for a good time and some insight. we come from all kinds of backgrounds and places so we don't all think alike but we all enjoy the same things. ITs ok to voice an unpopular opinion now and again just don't do it on every post or we'll end up like every other online community. chaos. Big mtn is a great midweek ddestination and a great january destination for low numbers. I ride tuesdays and thursdays with no lines ever and saturdays other than holidays and the week after are 3-5 minute lines. the hill is big enough to hide a ton of people and you learn that two or three runs are always gong to have choke points to avoid. that said we have several runs that are top to bottom carving dreams. just come long enough to absorb a fog day :D(they usually mean fresh powder)
  11. I am sure we can find you some floor space for one night somewhere. anyone on the hill got a spare couch or empty corner?
  12. No worries nothing is set in stone. chair six and chair two are both open at 9 AM . Chair six is just a good place to get everyone together. you can see the whole run from the top and the bottom. we can get everyone together and then you can lead us in a round of cum ba ya as we destroy ed's run:lol:
  13. Motorola freq 7 07 my cell (four oh six) 2535420 I will be on the hill saturday AM early first chair to the summit is 9:30 I will be on chair 6 at 9 AM for warm up and meet and greet. those arriving later use the motorolas to hook up with us and watch the grease board at the bottom of chair one. We should be hard to miss. the group can break up into a fast group and a slow group etc. from there. several of us will be willing to give mountain tours etc. First day informal. we will try to have some video and picture time if the sun cooperates. I plan to be in one of the close lots with the truck with locking topper full of quiver so demo and tryout stuff will be available. Saturday lunch in the summit house at 1:30 PM meet and greet and arrange for meal reservations etc for later in the week. pretty informal have a good time meet new people and most importantly trench the hell out of toni matt:eplus2::eplus2::eplus2: If it snows a ton we'll shift gears and i'll lead powder tours of the good spots!

  15. everything from 85 / 83 on a surfrodz board to 35/30 on some of my wider boards. ITs a different game and a lot more involved for your back leg especially the calf but it can be done. some of the highback softie bindings make it hard to move enough to pull it off. I ride N-type switch boots and bindings. I also have a set of catek fr2's great binding:biggthump I have only been on my hardboot setup 2-3 times this yr because we have had so much powder. I maybe spend more time in softies carving than most here but I find it to be very doable. You will find yourself enjoying the green runs and not really needing to hit the steeps for groom anyway.
  16. I have yet to find a post surgical knee that didn't need some alignment. I would recomend searching for an ACTIVATOR Chiropractor in your area and getting the knee checked. simple easy noninvasive. the adjustment is done with a small springloaded instrument generally painlessly. http://activator.com/qualified_doctors.asp I would follow that with a 4-6 inch piece of Kinesiotape wrapped from the inside of the quad around under the kneecap to the outside of the quad. you can wear it for up to 5 days but just on riding days is probably sufficient if it doesn't bother you otherwise. http://kinesiotaping.com/content.asp?CustComKey=13660&CategoryKey=13661&pn=Page&DomName=kinesiotaping.com there are actually two pieces of tape in this picture but the U shaped one is the important one. It is applied with the leg bent at 90 degrees and the tape tightens as you extend the leg. the tape is very stretchy and isn't noticeable or uncomfortable to wear. It simply takes a little strain off the joint and the associated muscles. It also improves lymph flow which can be helpful if you get a lot of fluid build up in the knee.
  17. awwwwwwh did the poor island boy get his nose froze:lol: two days of that and we dub you an honorary montanan:lol: 38 below zero west of town this morning. 18 below in kalispell. Is BIG MTN full of ****??? <TABLE class=gbvrs cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=4 width=762 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=f10blue vAlign=top align=left width=500 colSpan=2>10 am update: This could be the prettiest morning all season. This is definitely a groomer day...I skied Toni Matt, Big Ravine and Hogan's East, which are all skiing great. Off-piste is chunky due to yesterday's high winds. The temps have gone up a little bit, but make sure you're treating your hands, feet and the tip of your nose with care! Hellroaring Basin is now open.) We're back to clear, crisp, and calm. If you haven't seen the views from the summit, this is a day to see Glacier National Park from the top. The groomers have been out there reshaping and moving wind-blown drifts so that we can cruise on the corduroy. We have groomed runs that will please every type of skier/boarder. For a perfect intermediate run, with a nice pitch, don't forget to check out Hogan's. Moose is groomed too, so it will be nice to duck into that run. Today we have a wind chill advisory, so make sure you cover your face while riding the lifts--bring a neck warmer to keep your skin protected. The mid-mtn high is forecasted at 9 degrees. Take a few runs and then grab a hot drink at the Summit House or Ed and Mully's. Keep your hands and toes warm. I'll see you on the slopes (or in the Summit House!) Wow--yesterday was an exceptional day on the Big when nature proved herself queen of the hill. These things happen...very rarely. We didn't open the summit yesterday. For those of you who wonder what conditions were like on the summit, it was a place for polar explorers, not recreational skiers. We had an exceptionally strong wind event that blew whale-sized, rock hard snow drifts onto the runs. Sub-zero temperatures and cold winds continued throughout the day. I want to thank lift operations, ski patrol, and the groomers for making the right decisions and for keeping us off the summit! What are you doing on Tues and Weds night? It's a full moon and you should check out Moonlight Dine and Ski...ski under the full moon, eat some good chow, and see what Montana's all about! Call the Info Center for details. 862-2900. We have some great events on the way, so now I'm sending out a call to all VOLUNTEERS! Come volunteer at the Whitefish Whiteout Mountaineering race on Saturday, January 26. We need 6 volunteers. You'll receive a free pass that is valid for 12 months and a chance to watch this amazing race. Also, the 60th Annual Doug and Rollie Smith Downhill and Super G Race is just around the corner (Feb. 3-10). We need 60 volunteers to cover 7 days of high octane racing. If you check out the events page on the website, you'll find a volunteer form. All volunteers must have their own equipment and be able to ski. Just ask the locals--this year has been one of the best. In fact, I know this local skier, kind of a sweet ol' curmudgeon, who is not known for platitudes. I heard him say the other day, "This is some really good skiing." I nearly fell off the chair. 213" of beautiful snow has fallen since just before Thanksgiving. Dave and I have been shooting a bunch of photos and taking video to share this amazing winter with everyone. Keep checking our video link on the snow report for a chance to share in the experience. Do you know about tree wells? Ski Patrol has put out a info board at the summit with information on how to ski safely. We've received a lot of snow and the tree wells are getting big. Ski under control, be aware of your surroundings, and ride with a buddy. The Nordic Center was groomed Saturday. Track set Sunday. No skating due to snow drifts. Please check back later for today's grooming. The Big Easy (Magic) Carpet is not running today. List of today's groomed runs. <HR>VIDEOS! 18. The good mister dredman is the current owner of das amputator for those having trouble keeping up with its whereabouts. He'd make a good home for this one. the guy can ride a kitchen door down the mtn and make it look pretty:cool:
  19. Rent or Bring one with either way you need a powder board. I know a few people that can ride the big alpines in powder but I only know one or two that actually enjoy it. PAULK is the man on a skinny alpine board in deep powder and if you look at his pictures thread he's heli boarding on an all mtn board.
  20. IT has been done before. But you are chancing it. IF you can fully commit to basic riding and vigilant defensive riding you reduce the chances considerably for an accident. It really comes down to you and your own decision. There isn't a sane doctor anywhere that will tell you to go back out and snowboard. They risk liability etc in doing so. That said, lots of people have done it in this arena and others, (watch rodeo sometime) in general you risk another surgery and further downtime if you wreck. I see lots of clavicles on film and lots of old breaks, many that look really bizarre. You will probably do just fine if you tear it up again but you may be somewhat disfigured (bumpy) in that area. Oh yeah and it will hurt like a son of a bitch:eek: On the other hand you could get run over by a bus crossing the street next week. your call and yours alone. side note : the armour is a great idea mine has saved my shoulders at least three times. every one should wear it.
