Teddie Brosevelt
I just picked up a Volkl Spline 164 for 15 dollars at a Habitat for Humanity. Did I get a great deal? I have no idea about Alpine boards. I thought it was a soft boot board. I would like to try it out this winter but I have no idea about bindings or boots. Help? Neil Gendzwill
That's an old boardercross deck. IIRC it is a 24 cm waist so could be run with softies depending on foot size/stance.
Jack M
Welcome TR! What's your goal here? BX? Or GS/SL? You did score a sweet deal, although that board will be overpowered by hardboots as soon as you get decent at riding them.
BlueB
Although it might turn out to be a great all-mountain board for hard boots!
Teddie Brosevelt
Probably BX. I won't race or anything, just shred the slope. I have Burton Photons 11.5. They are pretty stiff. Can I use my Rome SDS bindings on this board. Thanks for getting back to me. I appreciate the help.
Jack M
You can use any binding that fits the standard 4x4 insert pattern. If you're looking to learn how to really carve, I'm afraid this board will be too narrow for your boot size when you tilt it up on edge to carve. You'd need to ride very high angles in order to prevent boot-out. I don't recommend that as you lose a lot of leverage in softboots with very high angles. Also it's not good for general freeriding. This board was basically free so I'd recommend unloading it and looking for a used wide board like the Donek Incline Wide, Burton Custom-X Wide, or K2 Fat Bob.
BlueB
What Jack said. It's too narrow for softies in your large size. It would be a good learning or all-mountain board for hard boots.
